Editorial

Jim Colgan has been President of Illinois Judo for 10 years.  During his tenure, Judo has undergone some significant changes, important changes, especially at the National level.  As your representative, I can categorically say that Jim has served with distinction and honor, always keeping the best interest of Judo and specifically Illinois Judo, at the fore front of what he believed was best for Judo.  Jim has been in Judo a long time – almost as long as me, which is about the only thing I can brag about.  Jim has won many awards and major championships in his career, is an international referee, has been President of the Chicago Judo Black Belt Association and Illinois Judo, a Hachidan (8th Dan).  But I believe his most cherished accomplishment in Judo is to lay claim to the hundreds, perhaps thousands of friends he has made all over the United States and world, because of Judo.  He is on a first name basis with world class athletes, current and past, international referees, administrators, educators, coaches and parents.  He has bridged the language barrier by learning enough of many languages to make a warm gesture of friendship regardless of what country they represent.  He has a wonderful sense of humor that belies the giant of a man that he is.  He is generous in his time and money – often stressing that you can’t take it with you and his kids don’t need it.  He is a friend for life and will overlook many shortcomings if you are honest and truthful.  Cross him and he can be your worst enemy.  As a friend , you can ask for no better.  THE hug and kiss on the top of your head signifies that you are truly a friend.  Jim Colgan is Mr Judo in Illinois and will continue to contribute in ways that will pale in comparison to most in Judo today.  Jim Colgan will be retiring as President of Illinois Judo but he will live on as someone who loved Judo, dedicated his life to this sport and will continue to be a counselor and mentor for the new band of leaders that must now take up the banner.  The bottom line is that we are all one family, Jim happens to be the patriarch and we are his children.  We will not disappoint him.  It is the spirit of a true teacher that says success breeds success and Jim continues to instill success in each of us.  Thank you, Jim and continue to be a friend and mentor.  We can only hope to achieve a part of what you expect us to become.

State Organizations and Clubs Offer Athlete Incentives for Pan Am Medals

USA Judo is pleased to announce that several state organizations and clubs have generously offered cash incentives for athletes who earn medals at next week’s Pan American Championships, May 25-27 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Ki-Itsu-Sai Judo Club in North Lauderdale, Fla. will match USA Judo’s award of $500 to any athlete in an Olympic weight division who earns a gold medal at the event.

In addition, Enrique Lopez and the National Judo Institute in Orlando and Miami, Fla. will award $200 to any athlete who wins a gold medal, regardless of division.

The states of Colorado and Texas also will be supporting their home athletes as the Colorado Judo League is providing the incentive of $500 for a gold medal and $300 for a silver medal to Colorado athletes Kirk Hoffmann (+100kg) and Ryan Reser (73kg), both from the Olympic Training Center USA Judo National Training Site in Colorado Springs as well as Djamaldin Aliev (Greenwood Village, Colo./European Judo/Olympic Training Center USA Judo National Training Site/100kg).

Texas Judo Inc. and the Texas Judo Fund will provide a bonus for Texas athletes who place at the Pan Ams in the following amounts: $500 for a gold medal; $300 for a silver medal; and $100 for a bronze medal.  Pan Am Team members from Texas include: Nicole Kubes (Fort Worth, Texas/Fort Worth Judo/78kg), Taylor Takata (Harlingen, Texas/Harlingen USA Judo National Training Site/66kg) and Andre Taylor (Plano, Texas/Becerra Judo/55kg)

The awards listed above are in addition to the USA Judo’s athlete incentive of $500 for athletes who win a gold medal and $300 to athletes who win a silver medal.   Athletes who win a gold medal also will become fully funded athletes regardless of their International point level and will be reimbursed for all reasonable expenses incurred, including flight (if the athlete was not already partially funded), room and board and other reasonable related expenses.   Athletes who win a silver medal will receive reimbursement for their airfare, not to exceed $1,000.00 or an amount determined to be reasonable, provided the ticket is purchased within 14 days of departure.  If the athlete is already a partially funded athlete, he/she will receive reimbursement for his/her room and board and other reasonable related expenses.  All Pan Am Championship Shiai Team members in Olympic weight divisions will be eligible for USA Judo athlete funding incentives.

Editor’s note: OK, so what is Illinois Judo going to do?  We have two athletes representing Illinois Judo at the Pan-American Championships:  Aaron Cohen and Ronda Rousey.  SO what is ILLINOIS JUDO going to do about it?

Letter from Dr. Ron Tripp Regarding the Passing of Mr. Takeuchi

Dear Friends of the American Judo Family;

I was with deep regret I learned of the passing of Sensei Yoshinori Takeuchi of Japan.  Sensei Takeuchi will always be remembered as one of judo's great leaders, yet he made a greater impact on all of us as a friend to everyone in judo around the World. I was fortunate to have the opportunity at many international events over the past 10 years to spend time with Sensei Takeuchi, to learn from him, to share his stories and humor, and to call him my friend.  Although we are deeply saddened by this news, let us join together and celebrate the life of a wonderful man and his impact on the judo world, and give thanks that he was our friend and a part of our lives. Our deepest sympathy to the Takeuchi family. He will be missed greatly by all.

With Deepest Respects

Dr. Ron Tripp

Something to Think About –

Puppies for sale

A farmer had some puppies he needed to sell. He painted a sign advertising the 4 pups. And set about nailing it to a post on the edge of his yard. As he was driving the last nail into the post, he felt a tug on his overalls. He looked down into the eyes of a little boy.

"Mister," he said, "I want to buy "one of your puppies."

"Well," said the farmer, as he rubbed the sweat off the back of his neck, "These puppies come from fine parents and cost a good deal of money."

The boy dropped his head for a moment. Then reaching deep into his pocket, he pulled out a handful of change and held it up to the farmer. "I've got thirty-nine cents. Is that enough to take a look?"

"Sure," said the farmer. And with that he let out a whistle. "Here, Dolly!" he called. Out from the doghouse and down the ramp ran Dolly followed by four little balls of fur.

The little boy pressed his face against the chain link fence. His eyes danced with delight. As the dogs made their way to the fence, the little boy noticed something else stirring inside the doghouse. Slowly another little ball appeared, this one noticeably smaller. Down the ramp it
slid. Then in a some what awkward manner, the little pup began hobbling toward the others, doing its best to catch up....

"I want that one," the little boy said, pointing to the runt. The farmer knelt down at the boy's side and said, "Son, you don't want that puppy. He will never be able to run and play with you like these other dogs would."

With that the little boy stepped back from the fence, reached down, and began rolling up one leg of his trousers.. In doing so he revealed a steel brace running down both sides of his leg attaching itself to a specially made shoe.

Looking back up at the farmer, he said, "You see sir, I don't run too well myself, and he will need someone who understands."

With tears in his eyes, the farmer reached down and picked up the little pup.

Holding it carefully he handed it to the little boy.

"How much?" asked the little boy. "No charge," answered the farmer, "There's no charge for love."

The world is full of people who need someone who understands.  Show your friends how much you care. Send this to everyone you consider a FRIEND.  If it comes back to you, then you'll know you have a circle of friends.

OK, you don’t have to send it on.  KN
