Editorial – A TRUTH – AN ATTITUDE
This past weekend, I found out that a dear friend’s cancer has come back – worse than before.  The prognosis is not good but then again, it probably never was.  I have visited him in the hospital, went to his birthday party.  I have gone to his tournaments and refereed with him at many events over the years.  He has taught hundreds of judokas and they have become better people for it.  He has trained many referees and coaches and teachers and developed friends throughout the United States.  He is passionate about what he believes in, we have even had "words" on those rare occasions where we both thought the other was hard headed.  But through it all, we have remained friends - great friends.  Through it all, his faith in Judo and his faith in friends has never wavered.   Through it all, his attitude, more than anything, has kept us all thinking that he can fight off any kind of disease, that his love of his family and his friends will somehow protect us from the awful reality that he is sick.  His love of USA Judo brought him to the Senior Nationals in Houston so that he could take part and voice his opinion for the future of USA Judo even though this was against the advise of his doctors, his family and his friends.  He has driven 10 hours to help at a local tournament in Southern Illinois or Michigan or Indiana, refereed all day and in the middle of it all, went to the car to sleep for a few hours because his body was low on fuel.  He has done so much for all of us.  He has uplifted us.  He has been there for us.  His ATTITUDE about Judo, about life, about friends has driven him to us.

BRETT WOOD-TAYLOR needs our help.  He needs our support and prayers as he attacks this terrible disease with all of the vigor he can muster.  Prayers and well wishes do help, not only for him but for his family.

I know I can count on all of you to keep Brett and his family in your thoughts.

Tohkon Classic:  Tohkon Judo Academy has spent a great effort over the last year to train referees for their tournament as well as other local tournaments in the future.  With the support of Doug Tono, Head Instructor of Tohkon, 6 new referees from young juniors to senior level competitors refereed at this event. Over the past year, Mary Gail Ford has been working with these individuals to develop their skills with club training and monthly competitions.  This is a welcome boost to an aging Illinois National referee group and will hopefully become the focus for other clubs to do develop similar programs.  Their have been other clubs sponsoring similar referee programs including Gurnee Judo Club and Chicago Tenri Judo Dojo but development nevertheless has been slow.  All such efforts however, should be heralded as a step in the right direction.  Every club in Illinois should be developing referees with the same dedication as they train players and coaches.  Every club should have at least one certified local or regional referee counted as a member.  The bigger the club, the more referees you should be developing.  Judo is a multi-dimensional sport and there are many ways to contribute.  For further information about how to train referees, please contact the editor.  Programs can be developed to suit your club schedule or programs.

Acting Secretary

From the President: Tim Schultheis

This is my first communication as the newly elected Illinois Judo, Inc. (IJI) President.  I am greatly honored by IJI's vote of confidence and will take my responsibilities seriously.  Let's get started.  We will conduct a Special Meeting, per our IJI Constitution, at 1:00 PM, Saturday, 19 August, at a place to-be-determined (we will publish the location in a subsequent IJI Newsletter shortly).  Our first order of business will be to hold an election to select our Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer.  That meeting's agenda will also include a general discussion and agreement about the IJI's Board of Directors' roles and responsibilities (let's scope our objectives), an IJI financial review, and preliminary discussions for holding an Illinois Judo State Championships (tentative target date, Feb 07).  We have the potential to do some great things in Illinois Judo over the next few years.  We have the talent, experience and energy at our local Illinois Judo clubs to build an Illinois Judo organization that can make a big difference.  In the meantime, we need a conference room and, if possible, conference call-in capability to hold our 19 August Special Meeting.  If you have suggestions or offers, please contact me at tschulth@warpnet.net.

About our new IJI President:

Tim Schultheis, 44 years old, was elected IJI President by the IJI delegates last Saturday, 11 June 2006.  He enters this position of responsibility, armed with a passion for the sport of judo.  Tim began judo at 9 years old at the Edwardsville, Illinois YMCA Judo Club.  He played judo throughout most of his childhood.  Tim entered the military through Army ROTC in 1981.  He spent most of his time in combat arms/operational assignments and had several tours in staff/planning positions.  As such, he had lots of breaks in active participation in judo during his 20's and 30's.  While being stationed overseas and in the U.S., he had the opportunity to study other martial arts and was member of several judo clubs, most notably, the Fort Leavenworth Judo Club (Coach Rick Donnelson), Fort Bragg Judo Club (Coach Ron Hansen), and Barstow Judo Club (Coach Ernie Smith).  Tim was active in Armed Forces Judo, competing often at Armed Forces Judo Nationals (2001 U.S. Armed Forces National Champ) and other tournaments held at U.S. posts, bases and installations.  He has also played in numerous masters competitions, including local, national and world masters events.  He was a 2002 U.S. Masters silver medalist.  But his real devotion to judo has been to coaching.  Tim and his wife, Anne, founded the Gurnee Judo Club in 1999; and since then, their club has accumulated approximately 50 junior national/international titles.  His daughter, Nicki, 17 years old, and son, Robby, 14 years old, have been on the USA Elite Athlete Rosters for several years, representing USA judo and medaling at numerous Junior Pan-American and other international competitions.  Nicki competed in the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials.  The Gurnee Judo Club has been affiliated with the Great Lakes Adaptive Sports Association, actively supporting that organization.  Tim is a certified judo coach for the visually impaired.  The Schultheis family intends to maintain their involvement with their local, state, and national judo communities on a long term basis.
Education:  MBA Syracuse University and BA Accounting/Business Administration, Butler University
Military Training/Experience:  Armor, Airborne (paratrooper), Ranger, Special Forces Hand-to-Hand Combat Schools; awarded the Bronze Star during Gulf War
Current Employment:  Director of Planning and Programming, Naval Service Training Command, Great Lakes, Illinois

As some of you may know by now, Tadd Fujikawa, a golf phenom and former Junior National Judo Champion missed the cut at Winged Foot, home to the US Open Golf Championships this weekend.  Tadd, at 15, is the youngest player ever to play in this event.  Finishing 18 over par, he still finished one shot better than former Open Champions, Mark Calcavecchia and Nick Price.  Not bad for his first major senior event.

Former Junior Judo National Champion Qualifies for U.S. Open Golf Championships

As kids many top junior judo players imagine competing at the U.S. Open.

In fact, three of last year’s medalists – Kayla Harrison, Veronica Prado and Daimisy Porras – were all under the age of 16, so success at the U.S. Open at a young age isn’t unheard of.

But that’s judo, not golf.

Tadd Fujikawa (Honolulu, Hawaii) was one of the best young judo players in the United States.  Growing up he won four junior national titles, most recently winning his division in 2002.

Fujikawa’s grandfather, Danny, is the owner of the Salt Lake Judo Club in Honolulu – a dojo that continues to produce excellent athletes, including three junior national champions in 2005 – and the lightweight player was considered to have great future potential in the sport.

Then he decided to shift his focus from the mat to the golf course where the strength he had gained as a judo player transferred into a powerful golf swing.

At age 12, Fujikawa stopped competing in judo, but this week he may be one of the most watched athletes in the country as the 15-year-old competes at the U.S. Open Golf Championships at Winged Foot in Mamaroneck, N.Y.

Not only is qualifying for one of the most prestigious golf championships in the world impressive, at Fujikawa’s age it’s nearly unheard of as only player to compete in the U.S. Open at a younger age was Tyrell Garth who played the event as a 14-year-old in 1941.

On a day in which only one player went under par and even two-time Champion Tiger Woods struggled at six-over, Fujikawa made his U.S. Open debut Thursday with an 81.

The teenager will continue play today as one of only nine amateurs in the field.

Fujikawa tees off for his second round, and an attempt to make the cut for weekend play, at 2:42 p.m. EST.  He will play in the final group of the day, joining John Koskinen, a 26-year-old former Academic All-American and veteran of the Hooters’ Tour, and 33-year-old Stephen Woodard, a top-10 finisher on last year’s Canadian Tour.

USA Judo Board Begins A New Era…

The USA Judo Board of Directors held its first meeting since the restructuring of the board on June 10 in Dallas on the campus of the Parker College of Chiropractors.

In April, the previous Board of Directors met in Houston, Texas and adopted a new governance structure through approved revisions to the USA Judo Bylaws.  Among the revisions to the bylaws included a significant reduction in the size of the Board from more than 100 members to 10. This monumental move by the visionary leaders of judo in the United States was fully supported by the United States Olympic Committee.

This first meeting of the new Board of Directors meeting marks a beginning of a new era for USA Judo as it moves into the final strait to Beijing 2008…  read more at usjudo.org>

·         USA Judo CEO, Rodriguez presented to the Board the concept of a USA Judo National Assembly to be held also Oct. 19 also at the Marriott Miami Dadeland.  This Judo National Assembly will be a forum that will allow all USA Judo members to learn and to share knowledge that will move the Olympic sport of judo forward in the United States.

·         The Board also discussed the location for the 2007 and 2008 U.S. Open, including a recommendation to look at New York City as a possible location for this premier event.  he US Open Senior Championships be the third week of October while they will place their two key events as bookends the week prior and the week after the US Open.

·         USA Judo CEO Rodriguez explained that there is still a lot of ground to cover, and many operational committees to be named. “Everyone should understand that in this new structure recommended by the USOC only a limited number of Standing Committees are named in the actual bylaws. As we move forward, operational procedures will be designed that will include many other committees that will be made up of USA Judo family volunteers. There is enough work to go around, and as we have now shown time and again, we do accept everyone’s offer to come on board this train and help us shovel coal into the engine. I really hope that as our members see the names of those being named to committees, they realize that this is not business as usual. We mean to use all of the talent that there is out there for the benefit of the sport and our athletes.”

·         Indeed USA Judo is heading into a new era and everyone is welcomed to be a part!

Tsuruo Fukushima Passes Away in Hawaii
Tsuruo Fukushima, the coach of numerous Olympians and National Champions, passed away May 12.  Mr. Fukushima was operated on for a blockage in his intestines.  While recovering, he was stricken with pneumonia and died at the age of 81-years-old.

Mr. Fukushima started teaching judo in Okinawa where his club became the only non-Japanese team ever to win the prestigious Team Tournament in Japan.  His students impressed senseis all over the United States with their strength, speed, and technical abilities.

In 1978, he returned to Oahu where he continued to teach judo at the Pearl City Hongwanji Judo Club.  In 1981 he founded Leeward Judo Club, which received the Century Award in 2004.  In his 54 years of teaching, he produced hundreds of black belts, several of which were national champions, and, of course, two Olympians – Keith Nakasone and Kevin Asano.

Mr. Fukushima’s favorite Japanese term was “Onegaeshi” – to give back.  He kept on preaching this to all of his students while dedicating his life to Judo.  His legacy and memory will live on as long as any of his students are giving back to the world by teaching judo.  His wife, Terry, and his two sons, Bobby and Scotty, survive him.  Words of condolence can be sent to

Something to Think About –  A Truth – ATTITUDE

There once was a woman who woke up one morning, looked in the mirror, and noticed she had only three hairs on her head.

"Well," she said, "I think I'll braid my hair today."? So she did and she had a wonderful day.

The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and saw that she had only two hairs on her head.

"H-M-M, " she said, "I think I'll part my hair down the middle today."? So she did and she had a grand day.

The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and noticed that she had only one hair on her head.

"Well," she said, "Today I'm going to wear my hair in a pony tail." So she did and she had a fun, fun day.

The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and noticed that there wasn't a single hair on her head.

"YEAH!" she exclaimed, "I don't have to fix my hair today!"

Attitude is everything.
Have a Good Day!
