Editorial

The Junior Circuit is upon us with four major Junior events all happening on 4 consecutive weekends starting with the

Junior Olympics (San Jose, CA) on July 8th – 9th

JA Junior Nationals (Boca Raton, FL) on July 15th – 16th

JF Junior Nationals (Ft Lauderdale, FL) on July 22nd – 23rd

Junior Open and Junior World Trials (Ft Lauderdale, FL) on July 29th – 30th

Of course all of these events lead up to the Junior World Championships (Santo Domingo, Dominica) October 12th – 15th

Competition will be difficult this year because some of these Junior National Champions will be vying for a spot on the 2008 or perhaps 2012 US Olympic Team.  It is a long road that requires much dedication to balance school, training, practice, competition, family all into a teenaged package.  I do not think most realize the sacrifice that one faces if their ambition is to make it to the team let alone to the top of the medal stand.

*      Money

*      Time

*      Practice

*      Family Support

*      Natural Ability

*      School/Work

*      Ambition/Desire/Drive

*      Focus/Concentration

*      Timing/Peaking

*      Maturity

*      Luck (of the draw, mistakes)

All of these things have to come together on that one day to be successful.  Not all things have to mesh together, but I would think a majority of these traits have to peak on that one day, that one hour, that one match, that one second to be successful at the Nationals, or the World Championships or the Olympic Games.  But isn’t that true of life?  A person is successful because they want to be.  A person lacking in some trait can overcome deficiencies by excelling in other areas.  A person might have to work harder, have a better work ethic, may have to overcome obstacles to attain their goals.  But if they really try, nothing is impossible.  That is the beauty of athletics and sports in general.

And I also believe that this is what life is all about.  Sports teaches us how to handle discipline, fairness, reward and disappointment, hard work and play,  integrity, getting along, diversity, coordination, balance, practice, going beyond, perfection, respect, “pushing the envelop“, and moving on.  Life, as in sports, is what you make of it.  No one is going to hand you a gold medal, you have to earn it.

So, to those of you who will be competing this summer and then onto the Junior Worlds or to the next local tournament, GOOD LUCK and best wishes for successful events.  Learn to win with pride with a good dose of humility.  Learn to lose with dignity but learn from those loses.   Conduct yourself with respect for your opponent, your coach, your club, your sport.  You represent yourself, your family, your club, your Sensei and the United States of America.  Never lose site of the fact that all of us want you to succeed and will help each of you to attain your goals.  YOU and only you are the masters of your destiny.  In the final analysis, YOU and only you will succeed or fail.  But YOU and only you will bring pride or dishonor to this sport called JUDO.  Go forth and do good.

From the IJI President – Tim Schultheis

As we announced in the  60618 Illinois Judo Newsletter, we will hold our next IJI elections for IJI Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer on August 19, 2006, in Aurora, IL. Blind Athletes to Compete at World Championships this Weekend in France

Six blind and visually impaired athletes will compete this weekend at the International Blind Sports Association World Judo Championships in Brommat, France.

Highlighting the team are 2004 Athens Paralympic Games medalists Scott Moore (Englewood, Colo./73kg) and Lori Pierce (Arvada, Colo./70kg).  In the 2000 Sydney Paralympic Games, Moore became the first American ever to win a gold medal in judo for the United States in either Olympic or Paralympic competition.  In 2004, he won a bronze medal while Pierce brought home silver.

Two additional veterans on the men’s side are 2005 Pan American Games medalists Scott Jones (Little Rock, Ark./81kg) and Andre Watson (Upper Darby, Pa./90kg)  Jones was a member of the 2004 Athens Paralympic Team and competed at 90kg, but this time has moved down to the 81kg division.

Two newcomers to international competition are Myles Porter (Toledo, Ohio/100kg) and Jordan Mouton (Houston, Texas/52kg).  Both Porter and Mouton were identified through U.S. Association of Blind Athletes’ grassroots development judo programs.

"Our team is composed of four veterans and two new faces to the USABA judo scene, each with exceptional physical talents and competitive history," Head Coach Mark Vink (Riverton, N.J.) "The sacrifices that our athletes are making to prepare for this year's competition are truly remarkable.  Although the competition they will face will be the most difficult ever, each athlete on this team has the ability to medal and, in turn, qualify for Beijing."

The World Championships begin Friday with competition in the men’s 60kg, 66kg and 73kg divisions as well as the women’s 63kg, 70kg, 78kg and +78kg divisions.  Saturday will feature the men’s 81kg, 90kg, 100kg and +100kg and the women’s 48kg, 52kg and 57kg divisions.  Team competition will be held on Sunday.

The team is being led by Head Coach Vink and Walter Dean (La Costa, Calif.) who is serving as a coach and team leader.

Deadline for Team FORCE Applications is July 31

Athletes interested in applying for participation in Team FORCE, the full-time resident training program created by Jimmy Pedro, a two-time Olympic medalist and 1999 World Champion, and Buck Wessell, 2004 Olympic Team Leader and board member of the Boulder Judo Training Center, are reminded that applications must be received by July 31.

Further details and application information are available at http://www.jimmypedro.com/olympicduo.htm

The Team FORCE Program is a full-time resident training program for judo players looking not only to advance their level of success in the sport, but also to become well-rounded athletes and successful leaders within their community.

Resident athletes accepted into this application-based program will train full-time with Pedro and a team of elite athletes at his club, Pedro’s Judo Center, in Wakefield, Mass.

Team FORCE members will be provided with a host of benefits, including:

·                     Travel grants

·                     College scholarship assistance

·                     Housing assistance

·                     Partial funding to national and international events

·                     Professional coaching and guidance from Jimmy Pedro and staff coaches

·                     Individualized training and competition plans

·                     Personalized weight training & conditioning programs

·                     Video analysis and review

·                     Elite competition team gear

·                     Pedro’s Judo Center tuition scholarships

Team FORCE athletes also will participate in monthly clinics that focus on key components needed for the development of future leaders and champions, including sessions on goal-setting, positive thinking, confidence, communication skills and discipline, conducted by Pedro and other leaders within the field.

These athletes will serve as leaders and role models to younger students by teaching beginner and junior classes at Pedro’s Judo Center and the Boulder Judo Training Center.

Athletes will be required to sign a contract to represent Team FORCE and commit to a minimum of two years in the program.

In addition to athletes who participate in the Team FORCE resident program, non-resident athletes also are eligible to apply for inclusion on the team.  Non-resident athletes will follow a structured training program and competition schedule and will be required to participate in scheduled camps and clinics at either Pedro’s Judo Center or the Boulder Judo Training Center as coordinated by the program directors.

Through this program, the Boulder Judo Training Center and Pedro’s Judo Center, both of which have produced some of the top judo players in the country, will act as partners with the long-term goal of replicating full-time athlete residency programs in both locations.

Athletes interested in applying for the program are asked to submit their judo bio and resume to Jimmy Pedro no later than July 31, 2006 to 12 Cameron Way, Methuen, MA 01844.
