Maturity
Luck (of the draw, mistakes)
All of these things have to
come together on that one day to be successful. Not all things have to
mesh together, but I would think a majority of these traits have to peak on
that one day, that one hour, that one match, that one second to be successful
at the Nationals, or the World Championships or the Olympic Games. But
isn’t that true of life? A person is successful because they want to
be. A person lacking in some trait can overcome deficiencies by excelling
in other areas. A person might have to work harder, have a better work
ethic, may have to overcome obstacles to attain their goals. But if they
really try, nothing is impossible. That is the beauty of athletics and
sports in general.
And I also believe that this is
what life is all about. Sports teaches us how to handle discipline,
fairness, reward and disappointment, hard work and play, integrity,
getting along, diversity, coordination, balance, practice, going beyond,
perfection, respect, “pushing the envelop“, and moving on. Life, as in
sports, is what you make of it. No one is going to hand you a gold medal,
you have to earn it.
So, to those of you who will be
competing this summer and then onto the Junior Worlds or to the next local
tournament, GOOD LUCK and best wishes for successful events. Learn to win
with pride with a good dose of humility. Learn to lose with dignity but
learn from those loses. Conduct yourself with respect for your
opponent, your coach, your club, your sport. You represent yourself, your
family, your club, your Sensei and the

Blind
Athletes to Compete at World Championships this Weekend in
Six blind and visually impaired
athletes will compete this weekend at the International Blind Sports
Association World Judo Championships in
Highlighting the team are 2004 Athens Paralympic Games medalists Scott Moore
(Englewood, Colo./73kg) and Lori Pierce (Arvada, Colo./70kg).
In the 2000 Sydney Paralympic Games, Moore became the first American ever to
win a gold medal in judo for the United States in either Olympic or Paralympic
competition. In 2004, he won a bronze medal while Pierce brought
home silver.
Two additional veterans on the
men’s side are 2005 Pan American Games medalists Scott Jones (Little Rock,
Ark./81kg) and Andre Watson (Upper Darby, Pa./90kg) Jones was
a member of the 2004 Athens Paralympic Team and competed at 90kg, but this time
has moved down to the 81kg division.
Two newcomers to international
competition are Myles Porter (Toledo, Ohio/100kg) and Jordan Mouton
(Houston, Texas/52kg). Both Porter and Mouton were
identified through U.S. Association of Blind Athletes’ grassroots
development judo programs.
"Our team is composed of
four veterans and two new faces to the USABA judo scene, each with exceptional
physical talents and competitive history," Head Coach Mark Vink
(Riverton, N.J.) "The sacrifices that our athletes are making to
prepare for this year's competition are truly remarkable. Although the
competition they will face will be the most difficult ever, each athlete on
this team has the ability to medal and, in turn, qualify for Beijing."
The World Championships begin
Friday with competition in the men’s 60kg, 66kg and 73kg divisions as well as
the women’s 63kg, 70kg, 78kg and +78kg divisions. Saturday will feature
the men’s 81kg, 90kg, 100kg and +100kg and the women’s 48kg, 52kg and 57kg
divisions. Team competition will be held on Sunday.
The team is being led by Head
Coach Vink and Walter Dean (La Costa, Calif.) who is serving as a coach
and team leader.
