From the President:

Our 16 Aug IJI meeting was a great success.  Please see 60822 Illinois Judo Newsletter - IPPON!!! for attached meeting minutes.  We had nearly full participation by District delegates, and we elected a slate of outstanding officers:

Chuck Clark, Vice President.  Most of you know Chuck.  You have probably watched or refereed his matches for decades.  He is an Illinois Judo product, hailing from Bob Corwin's Yorkville Judo Club.  Chuck is an accomplished judo athlete and is the head trainer at Yorkville.  From his love of sports, he has made a career in sports medicine and owns/manages two clinics.  His sons--Braden and Graham--are 2nd generation Yorkville judo players.  Chuck is eager to make a difference in Illinois Judo.

Mary Gail Ford, Secretary.  Again, everyone knows Mary Gail from the Tohkon Judo Academy.  She has been a long-term fixture in Illinois Judo and has been active in IJI and is a nationally certified referee.  Mary Gail has been doing much of the administrative workload for IJI for quite some time.  As the newly elected Secretary, she is committed towards attaining the maximum participation possible of IJI members in our discussions and plans for Illinois Judo.

Frank Oliveri, Treasurer.  Frank is another long-term Illinois Judo player and attained his national referee certification several years ago.  His coach has been Kei Narimatsu from the Tenri Dojo.  He works out there as well as the Gurnee Judo Club and teaches at Northeastern University in the city.  Frank is a C.P.A. (Certified Public Accountant), licensed in our state since 1985.  He has begun work already in reestablishing our not-for-profit status and will be involved in numerous fund raising initiatives for IJI.

We also established highly respected delegates from most of our Districts:

District 1 (Cook County, minus Chicago city limits):
Jim Colgan
Drew Wickam

District 2 (Lake, McHenry, Kane, DuPage, and Will)
Itaru Yoshinaga
Don Bordeau

District 3 (I-80 North)
Dennis Helm
John Guzman

District 4 (I-80 South
TO BE DETERMINED

District 5 (Chicago city limits)
Scott Goldstein
Brett Wolf

As IJI President, I appointed several committee chairs:  Promotion Chair/Jim Colgan, Membership Chair/Mary Gail Ford, Illinois State Championship Tournament Chair/Chuck Clark, IJI Homepage Chair/Don Bordeau, and Junior Development Chair/Brett Wolf.

We are eager to establish our delegates from District 4 (I-80 South) and a third voting delegate from Districts 1, 2, 3 & 5.  We are holding our next IJI meeting at noon, 16 Sep 06, again at Luigi's House (Restaurant), 778 North Route 59, Aurora, IL (630)375-6400.  We will also be holding an IJI meetings on 15 Oct (Wolf Tournament) and 12 Nov (Gurnee Veteran's Day Tournament) at times to be determined.

There are several initiatives that IJI is pursuing:

First, we are creating an IJI Homepage to post general Illinois Judo info.  In addition, we are researching teleconference methods for holding routine IJI meetings or committee workshops.  We hope that this enhances communication.

Second, we are planning a Feb 07, Illinois State Championship.  We are soliciting bids from any IJI club to host this tournament.  We will split the net profit between IJI and the hosting club.  The IJI Board will ensure full support in conducting this tournament--tech tables, referees, medical, etc.  If interested, please contact Chuck Clark (630)768-6009 by 15 Oct.  After 15 Oct, we will open the bidding to organizations outside of IJI.

Third, we will design a series of open workouts--randori intensive--but also instructional.  The IJI open workouts will rotate between participating IJI clubs.  It will be a great opportunity to play and coach with other high-quality clubs.  We will likely ask for a $5 donation per player with that donation going directly to IJI, a not-for-profit organization.

In summary, we think that we have a terrific pool of talented judo players, referees, coaches and parents.  We are excited to see what we can accomplish together.

Tim Schultheis, IJI President

EDITORIAL REPLIES:

Fantastic commentary on the bow. If our elders do not take a stand, and the Seniors do not teach the Juniors,  the traditions and rich culture of our Judo world will be forever lost. You see it happening all over our society, things like pulling out a chair for a woman guest, opening doors for others, Simple acts of courtesy and respect for others. We in Judo have always held ourselves to a higher level. I sincerely hope that we continue to do so in the future.  Thanks Kei.

Respectfully,

Jim Dunning (AZ)
ED NOTE:  Jim is Bill Dunning’s son.  Bill died a number of years ago, but I look at Bill as one of my referee sempai’s.  He did understand respect and the sempai-kokai relationship.  As a true teacher, he wanted me to excel and push, sometimes mercilessly to improve and be better than what I thought I could do.  When he taught me everything he could, he encouraged me to learn from others in the referee community.  By Jim’s comments, it is apparent that he taught Judo the way it was meant to be taught.

Excellent article on the Bow (Rei).  I just wish  more instructors/coaches would make sure their students observed this very special practice of respect, appreciation and humbleness.  Maybe we are just getting old - but I don't think so - especially in our very special sport.  Thanks

Susan Oles (PA)

Kei,

I like your editoral on the bowing. It’s a tradition of the sport that makes it unique to other sports.  I might be mistaken but I believe you have the kneeing bow wrong. To go into seiza one needs to go down on their left knee first then the right.

Tom Sheehan (MI)

ED Note:  Tom, you are absolutely right about the kneeling down left leg first.  The rest should be right.  It is tough to reconstruct something that is done second nature, while traveling and at 12 midnight.  Sorry about that.  J

"All Women's Championship" Date change

The date for the Coaches Clinic at the "All Women's Championship" have been changed due to a conflict with Dr. AnnMaria DeMars schedule.  It will be a 2 part clinic starting Friday evening 5pm, to 9pm 11/03/2006 at the Southside Dojo, 7840 Portage Rd. Portage, Mi. 49022. On Saturday the coaches will take part in coaching the competitors without coaches. After the competition there will be a review and Coaches Certification, at the venue.   Just a reminder that AnnMaria will be certifying coaches, USJA, USJI and USJF. There will be no coaches clinic Sunday.
I have attached a revised Flyer.
At this time the Referee and Kata clinics will still be held Sunday, 11/05/2006.
We are sorry if this has inconvenienced any one. It will however provide a hands on approach for the Coaches Clinic participants.  We look forward to your participation in this event.
Sincerely,
Deborah L. Fergus

Something to Think About – SALADS

NBC Dateline did a documentary on cut-up lettuce and spinach packaged in plastic bags. They took us through the whole process and talked about how the Ecoli bacteria is now showing up in the salad mix in bags. They don't know yet how the Ecoli got in, but they do know that deaths and serious sicknesses are occurring in many states. One woman told about how her child was near death from the lettuce and was sick for a long time. They warned us not to buy any bag salads until they find out from the investigation what is causing this contamination. The Dole Company has recalled their bags. See the links below.
