EDITORIAL

IMAGINE – Read the article and download the video. It is a two minute read, a four minute video, but a lifetime of reflection.

From the IJI President:

Last weekend, we held our third IJI meeting this year.  We added another more Board Member, Doug Tono, Head Instructor at Tohkon Judo Academy, who will serve as the 3rd delegate from our 5th District.  Our meeting went 2 hours and might be characterized as business-like, hard work, but accomplishing much.  Please see the attached minutes prepared by our IJI Secretary, Mary Gail Ford (Attachment ijimin91706).  I want to highlight a couple of items from the minutes.

- We are planning the 2007 Illinois State Open Judo Championships for a Sunday in February 2007 (date TBD) at the Yorkville Middle School (see IJI VP report).  This will be the first Illinois State Judo Tournament to be held in many years.

- We have scheduled 4 Open-Workouts at 4 different IJI clubs during October through January.  We will ask for a $5 donation per athlete, and the proceeds will go directly to IJI, a non-for-profit organization (see IJI Junior Development Chair report).

- Our Treasurer briefed a financial report of IJI's expenses and revenue over the last, approximately 5 years.  Our current fund balance is just under $14K (see IJI Treas. report).

- We are planning a Coaches' certification clinic, 10 December, at Tohkon Judo Academy to be conducted by Jim Colgan and Jim Petersonmore details soon.

- Expect to see our IJI homepage posted by 15 October.  More to follow on the link address.

We will hold our next IJI meeting, prior to the Wolf Tournament, 09:00-10:00 AM, 15 Oct at the Martial Arts Academy, 6101 North Broadway, Chicago, IL.  We will limit our agenda to Officer and Committee reports, then focus on the upcoming Illinois State Open Judo Championships, Coach's clinic, and Open-Workout schedule.

In the meantime, the IJI Board urges all Illinois judo players, coaches and referees to renew their USA Judo Membership.  There is a terrific promotional program for USA Judo offered. Please take advantage of it.  Remember, IJI receives $5 for every member annually and, as you can see from the above announcements, we making plans to invest those funds into high yield judo events.

Thanks,
Tim Schultheis

USA Judo Introduces Family Memberships

USA Judo is pleased to announce the creation of new primary family memberships for households with three or more USA Judo members.

Under the new membership structure, families who register up to four primary members will be able to do so for a reduced rate of $125.  Every additional member from the same immediate family will pay $30 annually.

“Judo is an excellent example of a sport where family members of all ages, from four to 84, can be found out on the mat practicing together at the same time and we thought this would be a great opportunity for the hundreds of families within USA Judo to receive a benefit for their continued loyalty to this great sport,” said USA Judo CEO Jose H. Rodriguez (Colorado Springs, Colo.)  “We hope that this new program not only rewards existing members, but provides an incentive for more judo players to encourage their families to take to the mat as well.”

In order to be eligible for this program, family members must all be immediate and reside in the same household address.

For more information, contact USA Judo Director of Membership Monica Wright-Tafoya (Colorado Springs, Colo.) at Monica.Wright-Tafoya@usajudo.us or 719.866.3685.

Referees Needed for U.S. Open Masters Competition

The Masters competition at the U.S. Open, Oct. 21-22 in Miami, Fla. will be open to all levels of current USA Judo National referees.  National referees also welcome to work for credit as technical officials at the Senior U.S. Open on Friday and Saturday.  However, they should be aware that working at the Senior U.S. Open will require them to become members of the Pan American Judo Union, including registering their belt rank with the PJU.

World Team Championships Results

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Valerie Gotay (Harlingen, Texas / Harlingen USA Judo National Training Site / 57kg) knew going into the World Championships by Team of Nation on Saturday that she was at a disadvantage.

Not only would she be competing with her U.S. teammates against some of the top athletes in the world, but she would have to balance this tournament with next week’s Rendez-Vous Canada in Montreal – the first event of the fall season that also will feature an international contingent and traditionally makes a significant impact on domestic elite rankings.

Not one to back down from a challenge, Gotay and Team USA arrived in Paris on Thursday and soon discovered that they would be fighting Japan, one of the top-ranked teams in the world in the first round.

For Gotay, that meant an opening match against Aiko Sato – the 2002 Junior World Champion.  Sato, a former 52kg player, has since moved up to 57kg and is a four-time World Cup medalist, including a bronze medal win at the Warsaw World Cup in May.

Gotay, best known for her groundwork, took Sato to the mat and pinned her for a waza-ari (half-point) that looked like it would go more>

Annie Shiraishi (Elk Grove, Calif. / Okubo / East Bay Judo Institute) also posted a win for the Americans, defeating Russia in the repechage.

Team USA went 1-6 against Japan in the first round of the team event and 2-5 against Russia in the repechage

Women’s Rendez-Vous Canada Lightweight Preview

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – An estimated 19 Americans are expected to compete in the women’s lightweight divisions of this weekend’s Rendez-Vous Canada, a Senior B-Level Elite Tournament, in Montreal.

Amid the mix are top medal favorites Sayaka Matsumoto (El Cerrito, Calif. / NYAC / East Bay Judo Institute / 48kg) and Valerie Gotay (Harlingen, Texas / Harlingen USA Judo National Training Site / 57kg).  Both athletes won bronze medals at this event last year as well as at the Pan American Championships in May.

A complete breakdown of each division is as follows:

Women’s 44kg (Estimated Division Size: 2)

As of early this week, this division is expected to be a two-woman show between Alexa Liddie (Colorado Springs, Colo. / Olympic Training Center USA Judo National Training Site) and Margaret Drake (Saratoga Springs, N.Y. / Jason Morris Judo Center)Liddie recently moved into the division from 40kg earlier this year, winning a bronze medal at the Senior Nationals while 22-year-old Drake is relatively new to the competition scene.  The two fought twice at the Fall Classic Nationals with Liddie taking both wins on the ground.

Women’s 48kg (Estimated Division Size: 17)

With Canadian star Isabelle Latulippe not slated to compete at the Rendez-Vous, this division quickly opens up for a number of potential takers.  Look for Japan’s Mayumi Takara, the 2005 Moscow Super World Cup and Pacific Rim Champion, and Donna Robertson (GBR) to be among the top contenders for gold.  Robertson finished second in a close final with Latulippe here last year and had a good European Tour in the spring, including a bronze medal at the Belgian Ladies Open.  Sayaka Matsumoto (El Cerrito, Calif. / NYAC / East Bay Judo Institute) will be looking for her second Rendez-Vous title and with her only loss at last year’s event coming to Latulippe, this could be Matsumoto’s year.  Caveat: Should Latulippe appear on Sunday, please note that all bets are off for this division.

Americans to Watch: Jeanette Rodriguez (Margate, Fla. / North Miami USA Judo National Training Site) is making her debut at this event.  Rodriguez has previously beaten all of the Americans in the division during the past two seasons, but it remains to be seen how she will fare with the international contingent.  Ann Shiraishi (Elk Grove, Calif. / Okubo / East Bay Judo Institute) didn’t compete at this event in 2005 either, but has shown great improvement this season, including a win over Rodriguez at the Fall Classic over Labor Day.  Shiraishi will be returning to competition with an added confidence boost after defeating a top-ranked Russian at the World Championships by Team of Nation on Sept. 16.  Second-ranked junior Brenna Clark (Hercules, Calif. / Okubo / APOA Judo Club) will be looking for senior international experience while 1994 U.S. Open Champion Stephanie Baim (Carrolton, Texas / Unattached) will be competing in her first international event in a decade.  Daimisy Porras (Miami, Fla. / North Miami USA Judo National Training Site) will be making her senior debut at 48kg.  A former 44kg National Champion, 16-year-old Porras is still new to the division, but could ruffle a few feathers with a good draw.

Women’s 52kg (Estimated division size: 26)

Japan again offers a strong podium hopeful in this division with Yoriko Yoshimura, a silver medalist at last year’s Moscow Super World Cup.  Poland also is expected to send a small team including Monika CabajCabaj was one of the hottest athletes in the division on this year’s European Tour, winning three World Cup medals, including silvers at the Budapest and Bucharest events, but failed to place at the European Championships in May.  Aminata Sall (CAN) will be shooting for her third Rendez-Vous title and the 2006 Pan American Champion should fare well in the mix.

Americans to Watch: National Champion Carrie Chandler (Scotia, N.Y. / NYAC / Jason Morris Judo Center) isn't expected to compete in Montreal which leaves Natalie Lafon (Harlingen, Texas / Harlingen USA Judo National Training Site) and Franchesca Durand (Coral Springs, Fla. / North Miami USA Judo National Training Site) as the highest ranked Americans in Canada with this being the first trip to Rendez-Vous for both athletes.  Neither athlete has an extensive international resume, although Lafon will be returning from the World Team Championships in Paris and 15-year-old Durand recently qualified for the Junior World Team.  Anna Palmer (Colorado Springs, Colo. / Olympic Training Center USA Judo National Training Site) also could be a factor to place.  Injured for a significant portion of 2005, Palmer looked good at the Fall Classic, defeating Lafon and fighting well in her final match against Durand.  Juniors Tara Clark (Hercules, Calif. / Okubo / APOA Judo) and Nicki Schultheis (Gurnee, Ill. / Gurnee Judo) also will be competing this weekend.

Women’s 57kg (Estimated Division Size: 22)

A final match between Maria Lindberg (SWE) and Valerie Gotay (Harlingen, Texas / Harlingen USA Judo National Training Site) could be one of the best matches on the women’s side – and a repeat of their match at the 2005 World Championships in Cairo.  Last time Gotay came out with the win en route to finishing ninth.  Lindberg had an excellent European Tour, finishing second at the Budapest World Cup and third in Birmingham while Gotay pulled out of Birmingham due to an injury sustained in RomeGotay competed at the World Team Championships over the weekend, though, beating a Russian who was ranked seventh in the world and a former Junior World Champion from Japan.  If the travel doesn’t become wearing, Gotay is a top prospect for a medal.  Others with final round prospects include Belgium’s Katrien Ongena, a 2005 World Cup Champion in Madrid and Jyuri Miyamoto (JPN), last year’s Asian Championships silver medalist.

Americans to Watch: Marti Malloy (San Jose, Calif. / San Jose State University) made her first international splash here when she won this event in 2002 as a 16-year-old who upset most of the top names in North America in the process.  To date she’s the only American to threaten Gotay and could easily be found in the medal rounds in Montreal.  If she fights well, Senior Nationals bronze medalist Ashlie Martini (Chicago, Ill. / Tohkon) could offset the plans of some of the big names.  The division is rounded out by a crew of youngsters, including Junior World Team member Hannah Martin (Albany, N.Y. / Jason Morris Judo Center), Hana Carmichael (Wellington, Fla. / Budokan) and Angelica Delgado (Miami, Fla. / North Miami USA Judo National Training Site).

Something to Think About  IMAGINE

I received this incredible email today…thought I would share with you and perhaps get it into the newsletter.  Take a look.  I think the message speaks for itself…Be sure to watch the video at the end.  Don Bordeau

Strongest Dad in the World      (Make sure you view the video at the end.)

[From Sports Illustrated, By Rick Reilly]

I try to be a good father.  Give my kids mulligans. Work nights to pay for their text messaging.  Take them to swimsuit shoots.

But compared with Dick Hoyt, I suck.

Eighty-five times he's pushed his disabled son, Rick, 26.2 miles in marathons.  Eight times he's not only pushed him 26.2 miles in a wheelchair but also towed him 2.4 miles in a dinghy while swimming and pedaled him 112 miles in a seat on the handlebars-all in t he same day.

Dick's also pulled him cross-country skiing, taken him on his back mountain climbing and once hauled him across the U.S.  on a bike. Makes taking your son bowling look a little lame, right?

And what has Rick done for his father?  Not much-except save his life.

This love story began in Winchester, Mass., 43 years ago, when Rick was strangled by the umbilical cord during birth, leaving him brain-damaged and unable to control his limbs.

"He'll be a vegetable the rest of his life;" Dick says doctors told him and his wife, Judy, when Rick was nine months old.  "Put him in an institution."

But the Hoyts weren't buying it.  They noticed the way Rick's eyes followed them around the room.  When Rick was 11 they took him to the engineering department at Tufts University and asked if there was anything to help the boy communicate.  "No way," Dick says he was told. "There's nothing going on in his brain."

"Tell him a joke," Dick countered.  They did.  Rick laughed.  Turns out a lot was going on in his brain.

Rigged up with a computer that allowed him to control the cursor by touching a switch with the side of his head, Rick was finally able to communicate.  First words?  "Go Bruins!" And after a high school classmate was paralyzed in an accident and the school organized a charity run for him, Rick pecked out, "Dad, I want to do that."

Yeah, right.  How was Dick, a self-described "porker" who never ran more than a mile at a time, going to push his son five miles?  Still, he tried.  "Then it was me who was handicapped," Dick says.  "I was sore for two weeks."  That day changed Rick's life.  "Dad," he typed, "when we were running, it felt like I wasn't disabled anymore!"

And that sentence changed Dick's life.  He became obsessed with giving Rick that feeling as often as he could.  He got into such hard-belly shape that he and Rick were ready to try the 1979 Boston Marathon.

"No way," Dick was told by a race official.  The Hoyts weren't quite a single runner, and they weren't quite a wheelchair competitor.  For a few years Dick and Rick just joined the massive field and ran anyway, then they found a way to get into the race officially: In 1983 they ran another marathon so fast they made the qualifying time for Boston the following year.

Then somebody said, "Hey, Dick, why not a triathlon?"

How's a guy who never learned to swim and hadn't ridden a bike since he was six going to haul his 110-pound kid through a triathlon? Still, Dick tried.

Now they've done 212 triathlons, including four grueling 15-hour Ironmans in Hawaii.  It must be a buzzkill to be a 25-year-old stud getting passed by an old guy towing a grown man in a dinghy, don't you think?

Hey, Dick, why not see how you'd do on your own? "No way," he says. Dick does it purely for "the awesome feeling" he gets seeing Rick with a cantaloupe smile as they run, swim and ride together.

This year, at ages 65 and 43, Dick and Rick finished their 24th Boston Marathon, in 5,083rd place out of more than 20,000 starters. Their best time'?  Two hours, 40 minutes in 1992--only 35 minutes off the world record, which, in case you don't keep track of these things, happens to be held by a guy who was not pushing another man in a wheelchair at the time.

"No question about it," Rick types.  "My dad is the Father of the Century."

And Dick got something else out of all this too.  Two years ago he had a mild heart attack during a race.  Doctors found that one of his arteries was 95% clogged.  "If you hadn't been in such great shape," one doctor told him, "you probably would've died 15 years ago."

So, in a way, Dick and Rick saved each other's life.

Rick, who has his own apartment (he gets home care) and works in Boston, and Dick, retired from the military and living in Holland, Mass., always find ways to be together.  They give speeches around the country and compete in some backbreaking race every > weekend, including this Father's Day.

That night, Rick will buy his dad dinner, but the thing he really wants to give him is a  gift he can never buy.

"The thing I'd most like," Rick types, "is that my dad sits in the chair and I push him once."

 Here's the incredible 4-minute video....
