EDITORIAL – Happy Thanksgiving if I do not have a chance to wish you this next week.  May the blessing you enjoy this holiday season be many.

EDITORIAL RESPONSE:

In response to “A Pittance of Time” these are some of the responses I received.  Overwhelmingly positive but for one.  All comments were received with their names attached but for one.

Great Video….Scott L.  Thanks!!

Thank you Kei for such a lovely email.  You are sooo right!  It is because of the young men and women who have fought all these wars that we have such freedom in this country of ours...  We take our freedom so much for granted...  Wake of America!  Thank you again...  I certainly have kept them in my prayers and will certainly remember those who have died for our freedom.  Ophe H.

Good one, Kei,

Brian D.

This is a  great piece, Kei.  I've not heard of Terry Kelly but he is obviously a very passionate, caring person.  Under separate cover I'm sending you an email that looks good to me.  Hope you like the idea.

Dick & BA Q.

Thank you, that was very inspirational.

My father served in WWII as did my uncle, his brother. My uncle was a B24 pilot and was shot down three times and rescued three times by the French underground. They both were in Pearl Harbor also, my uncle when it was attacked.

Grandfathers (and Grandmothers), fathers (and mothers) and sons (and daughters) should all respect this as should everyone.

Again, thanks

Fritz M.

I have recently been re-reading Yamashita-Sensei's "Fighting Spirit" book. In one of the appendix pages is a list of all the wins in his 203 fight winning streak in international contest. I was curious to know what techniques were on the list and what percentages they were used, so I punched the data into Excel and this is what I found.

Yamashita Photo Copyright by David FinchThe table above shows clearly that his highest scoring techniques is Yoko Shiho Gatame, followed by Uchi Mata and then combinations. The definition of combination is a pain as it covers so much, but the data was limited. The next two highest scoring techniques were Ne-Waza techniques and the famous O Soto Gari only comes in at position six on the table. We can probably assume that many of the combinations involved O Soto Gari and Uchi Mata.

There are 161 recorded scores, from a winning streak of 203 matches. 42 were won without a deciding score. This would put refereeing decisions squarely at position number two on the list.

A brief inspection of these results can tell us that having a strong Ne-Waza and a strong Tachi-Waza technique is essential. As players we also need to be able to demonstrate to referees that we were the superior player when scores are tied.

As a coach or player, we could decide that we should focus on standing and groundwork. Ensuring that players are positive and are able to influence the referee is vital. To this end, players should practise influencing the referee's decisions in just the same way as they would any other Judo skill.

2007 Armed Forces Judo Team Looking for Applicants

The Armed Forces Sports Office has once again approved the participation of an Armed Forces Judo Team in the 4th World Military Championships to be held in Hyderabad, India from Oct. 14-21, 2007.  Due to military commitments and operational requirements it has been challenging to assemble a full team for this event during the last few years.  Therefore, we need to start early and allow the military athletes enough time to prepare for this competition. The criteria for the selection of military judo athletes to attend the 2007 Armed Forces Camp is as follows:

                     a. Athletes must have competed in one "A+, A, or B" level competition

                     b. Athletes must be nationally ranked in the top 10 of their respective weight class

                     c. Athletes must finish in the top 50% of their weight class at a "C" level competition

Interested athletes must immediately notify the team's head coach, Major (P) Hector R. Morales-Negron, in order to receive training and competition recommendations in preparation for the 2007 Armed Forces Judo Camp. Experienced judoka service members that currently do not meet the minimum standards for an invitation to camp due to operational requirements still have time to acquire the points needed for an invitation. For more information please contact:

City of North Miami Approves National Training Site

The North Miami City Council voted in a meeting last night to approve the development of a new training site in North Miami that will be used by USA Judo, U.S. Fencing, USA Taekwondo and USA Wrestling.

Following the approval of this contract with the four NGBs, the City of North Miami will begin implementing a plan for the design and construction of the new training site.

“It has taken a little over a year to finalize this agreement with the City of North Miami, but we are pleased that it is now done and we are very grateful to Mayor Kevin Burns and the City Council for approving the new site,” said USA Judo CEO Jose H. Rodriguez (Colorado Springs, Colo.) “Once completed, we hope this will be one of many similar USA Judo National Training Sites, including our existing programs in Harlingen, Texas and Colorado Springs.  Our next step is to finalize the housing and educational deal with Johnson & Wales University in North Miami.”

Already, there is a strong contingent of young athletes competing as part of the North Miami USA Judo National Training Site program and the approval of City Council will enable these athletes to have a permanent elite-level facility.

The North Miami USA Judo National Training Site is led by Head Coaches German Velazco, a 2000 Olympian from Peru, and Jhonny Prado

Prado and Velazco, who coached the 2006 Junior World Team in October, were both in attendance during the meeting along with Rodriguez and North Miami athletes Bobby Lee (Coral Springs, Fla. / 73kg), Jeanette Rodriguez (Coral Springs, Fla. / 48kg), Ronnie Talledo (Coral Springs, Fla. / 60kg), Angelica Delgado (Miami, Fla. / 57kg), Franchesca Durand (Coral Springs, Fla. / 52kg) and Jean-Pierre Durand (Coral Springs, Fla. / 60kg).

“This is definitely great news,” said Prado. “We’re looking forward to the building opening and we’re just going to keep working hard and hopefully we’ll continue to see more great results in the next year.”

Athletes from the North Miami squad have had a great deal of success during the past year.  Most recently, seven athletes from the team won medals at the Senior U.S. Open Championships with Lee and Rodriguez taking their first gold medals.  Talledo, Adler Volmar (Miami, Fla. / Open) and Veronica Prado (Coral Springs, Fla. / 44kg) each won silver medals while Franchesca Durand and Jean-Pierre Durand took home bronze.

USA Claims Three More Medals at Finnish Open

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Kristen Allan (Springfield, Va. / Sport Judo / 63kg) won her first B-Level international medal with a silver, one of three trips to the podium for Team USA, at the European Judo Union B-Level Finnish Open on Sunday in Vantaa.

Allan, a 23-year-old who began competing in the sport four years ago, made her first major foray onto the European Tour earlier this year and won three matches in a row to compete in the final in Vantaa.

In the first round, Allan choked former Junior U.S. Open Champion Aneta Mozden (CAN) to win by ippon (instant win).  Allan then threw Roberta Piano (ITA), a fifth-place finisher at the Rome World Cup, for ippon with a drop seoi nage (dropping shoulder throw).

In the semifinal, Allan took an early lead… more>

Gotay Wins Finnish Open

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Valerie Gotay (Harlingen, Texas / Harlingen USA Judo National Training Site / 57kg) earned a belated “Happy Birthday” gift on Saturday with a gold medal win at the Finnish Open in Vantaa.

Gotay turned 33 on Sunday in a sport where the average age of women with a #1 ranking in the United States is 20-years-old.  The day before, Gotay finished fifth at the Swedish Open in Boras and spent her birthday trying to find quality sushi in a Swedish town and watching more judo.  The next day, Gotay and her U.S. teammates started a three-day international training camp before embarking on the six-hour bus trip and 12-hour boat ride needed to get to Vantaa.

Once in Finland, Gotay won each of her first three matches quickly, ending all of them by ippon (instant win) in less than 90 seconds, to advance to the final against Nina Koivumaki (FIN) who finished fifth at this year’s European Championships and second at the Tallinn World Cup in March.

Gotay’s final against Koivumaki went longer than the total of her previous three, but she sealed the win with a koka (smallest points) in the five-minute match.

Sayaka Matsumoto (El Cerrito, Calif. / NYAC / East Bay Judo Institute) won the United States’ other medal for the day… more>

Something to Think About –

J WHO YOU ARE MAKES A DIFFERENCE! J

I have been contemplating an idea.   If you are familiar with the book Chicken Soup for the Soul, you may have read a story about blue ribbons. It goes like this:

A teacher in New York decided to honor each of her seniors in high school by telling them the difference they each made. Using a process developed by Helice Bridges of Del Mar, California, she called each student to the front of the class, one at a time. First she told them how the student made a difference to her and the class. Then she presented each of them with a blue ribbon imprinted with gold letters which read, "Who I Am Makes a Difference."

Afterwards the teacher decided to do a class project to see what kind of impact recognition would have on a community. She gave each of the students three I more ribbons and instructed them to go out and spread this acknowledgment ceremony. Then they were to follow up on the results, see who honored whom and report back to the class in about a week.

One of the boys in the class went to a junior executive in a nearby company and honored him for helping him with his career planning. He gave him a blue ribbon and put it on his shirt. Then he gave him two extra ribbons, and said, "We're doing a class project on recognition, and we'd like you to go out, find somebody to honor, give them a blue ribbon, then give them the extra blue ribbon so they can acknowledge a third person to keep this acknowledgment ceremony going. Then please report back to me and tell me what happened."

Later that day the junior executive went in to see his boss, who had been noted, by the way, as being kind of a grouchy fellow. He sat his boss down and he told him that he deeply admired him for being a creative genius.

The boss seemed very surprised. The junior executive asked him if he would accept the gift of the blue ribbon and would he give him permission to put it on him. His surprised boss said, "Well, sure."

The junior executive took the blue ribbon and placed it right on his boss's jacket above his heart. As he gave him the last extra ribbon, he said, "Would you do me a favor? Would you take this extra ribbon and pass it on by honoring somebody else? The young boy who first gave me the ribbons is doing a project in school and we want to keep this recognition ceremony going and find out how it affects people."

That night the boss came home to his 14-year-old son and sat him down.  He said, "The most incredible thing happened to me today. I was in my office and one of the junior executives came in and told me he admired me and gave me a blue ribbon for being a creative genius.

Imagine. He thinks I'm a creative genius. Then he put this blue ribbon that says 'Who I Am Makes A Difference' on my jacket above my heart. He gave me an extra ribbon and asked me to find somebody else to honor. As I was driving home tonight, I started thinking about whom I would honor with this ribbon and I thought about you. I want to honor you.

"My Days are really hectic and when I come home I don't pay a lot of attention to you. Sometimes I scream at you for not getting good enough grades in school and for your bedroom being a mess, but somehow tonight, I just wanted to sit here and well, just let you know that you do make a difference to me. Besides your mother, you are the most important person in my life. You're a great kid and I love you!"

The startled boy started to sob and sob, and he couldn't stop crying.

His whole body shook. He looked up at his father and said through his tears, "I was planning on committing suicide tomorrow, Dad, because I didn't think you loved me. Now I don't need to."
