EDITORIAL – Writer’s Block?
Believe it or not, when I was a
lot younger, like in high school and college, I just hated to write. I
was not particularly good at dangling participles or writing in the future past
perfect tense, whatever that means. And my handwriting was absolutely
horrific especially if I had to write fast. I was able to print small
however, and this may have helped my memorization skill set in school – a
thousand note cards with 50 disparate ideas all hovering around one specific
principle. You all remember this I am sure. I am equally sure that
there are many out there that are not handicapped by a dyslexic mind, grasping
for understanding. Some of you are pretty smart and those things came
easily. To those who can write a 5000 word essay in an hour, my hats off
to you.
The same can be said about
anything or anyone I suppose. What about the gifted intellectual.
Are they really smart or do some have to work at it? Or the athlete,
who because of genetics, becomes the fastest person in the world? How
does one become President of anything, let alone the superpower of the world
(and no, this is not a political statement). My guess is that there are
plenty of smart folks out there, plenty of great athletes, plenty of folks who
excel. My guess is that there are also plenty of folks in these
categories who have to work very hard to achieve the success they have sought
and continue to work hard to maintain that level of excellence. They have
the gift of perseverance.
Judo is no exception.
Every now and then, someone comes along that has exceptional athletic abilities
and they just stand out as winners. They pick up that O-Soto Gari (Major
Outer Reaping Thrown) and Seoi-Nage (Shoulder Throw) and are onto Yoko-sutemi
waza (Side Sacrifice throws) in six months. They learn the Sankaku
(key-lock) hold down and every variation of this soon after. They work
and they work hard, but perhaps, not as hard as the vast majority of Judoka’s
practicing today. Even the great Yasuhiro Yamashita (9 time All Japan
Champion, 3 time World Champion and an 84 Olympic Gold Medalist), who has never
lost a match in over 200 fights, had to train hard.
The vast majority of us have to
train, study and concentrate to become the best of class. And this is often
not enough, knowing that the guy at the next club does not have half the desire
you have, trains a quarter of what you do and still continues to beat
you. It is frustrating and some times a seeming less futile effort.
But you must also remember that
it is often enough knowing that you trained as hard as you could, competed with
great ferocity and fervor and even though the you were standing next to the
medal stand and not atop it, you stood proud know that you did your best.
What brought you to this place and time? The love of what you are doing,
the discipline that you know that comes from practicing one thing 10,000 times,
the shear love of competition, the respect you have for your sensei’s(teachers)
and your fellow Judoka’s, the guiding principles of Judo, the control of your
body and emotions during and after competitions, the life lessons learned in
winning and in losing.
Some of the most dedicated,
loved and respected Sensei’s I know are not great Champions in the sense of
medal winners. They are the Sensei’s who teach their students respect and
honor, technique and variations, discipline and balance. They teach life
as it should be taught – with hard lessons learned using some wit and humor to
assuage the disappointment that naturally come with life. They teach oft
times at the expense of their families, their friends and their health.
They are the true champions of this sport – the CLUB SENSEI and we should all
be grateful for their loyalty and dedication in OUR sport.
From the IJI President:
Our Illinois Judo Coach's Clinic is coming up soon.
Our clinician, Pat Burris, USA Judo Coaching Development Chair is excited to be
in Chicago to train and certify all the Chicagoland coaches who participate (of
course, we invite coaches from other states too). Pat will be
assisted by Jim Colgan and Jim Peterson in teaching sound coaching practices,
while Kei Narimatsu will present a referee tutorial, tailored for this coaching
clinic. Together this team will certify up to National Level (formerly
known as C-Level), depending on participant current qualifications. The
clinic starts at 10:00 AM, 9 Dec 06, at the Tohkon Judo Academy. Also,
Chief Barry Henby, Gurnee Fire Department will be training and certifying clinic
participants in first aid and CPR at 1:00 PM. Please see attached flyer.
We are holding our next IJI Meeting at 09:00 AM,
Saturday, 9 Dec 06, at the Tohkon Judo Academy, immediately preceding the
Coach's Clinic. The agenda will be Executive Committee reports and planning
the Illinois State Open Judo Championships.
Our Illinois Judo patches have arrived! The design
is our logo (check out the Coach's Clinic flyer) on a ~3" x ~2"
patch with a black border. Looks sharp! We will sell our Illinois
Judo patches at Santa Shiai and other upcoming events. Cost is $10…all
proceeds directly to IJI.
Thanks,
Tim Schultheis

Five U.S. Players Advance to Pan Am Infantile Championships
Finals
The following athletes will compete in the 11-12-year-old gold
medal finals of the Pan American Infantile Championships at 5 p.m. local time

County Judo / +53kg) won a silver medal in a round robin division.

PJU Congress
Selects United States for Final Olympic Qualifier in 2008
USA Judo
Scores a Win for Athletes
The Pan
American Judo Union Congress voted Tuesday in Maracaibo, Venezuela to award
the 2008 Pan American Championships to the United States.
The 2008 Pan
Ams, the final opportunity for countries in North and South America to qualify
for the Beijing Olympic Games, will be held in South Florida in May 2008.
USA Judo won
the event in a 25-10 vote over Brazil who also presented an excellent bid
package to the PJU Congress.
This event
announcement comes after a highly successful Pan American Junior Championships,
held in April in Colorado Springs, Colo.
“Everybody left
the Pan Am Juniors very happy with their experience both inside and outside of
the venue and they are looking forward to returning to the United States,” said
USA Judo CEO Jose H. Rodriguez (Colorado Springs, Colo.) “USA Judo
put forth South Florida as a bid with the support of many of the Caribbean and
Central American countries in the PJU who felt that the proximity of
South Florida to a number of countries and the direct flight access would be
beneficial for all athletes in the Pan Am region.”
The last time
the United States played host to a Pan American Championships also was in
Florida when Orlando was the site of the 2000 Pan Ams prior to the Sydney
Olympic Games.
“The 2008 Pan
Ams will be a great opportunity for our athletes to fight at home in the last Olympic
qualifier,” Rodriguez said. “For those who haven’t qualified, they will
be able to do so in front of a home crowd. The people in South Florida
have always been great supporters of our events, including our most recent U.S.
Open in Miami, and we’re looking forward to coming back again for one of the
most crucial events for Team USA before the Olympic Games.”

Infantile Championships include competition for 11-12-year-olds on Thursday
and 13-14-year-olds on Friday. Five members
of the team are Pan Am Infantile competitors from last year’s squad that
brought home a total of 25 medals. The five
returning members to the team each won medals last year, including titles won
by Katelyn Bouyssou (Hope, R.I. / Mayo Quanchi Judo Club), Marina
Lambert (Chesapeake, Va. / Washington Judo), Kyle Taketa (Torrance,
Calif. / Gardena Judo), Carly Patton (Zephyrhills, Fla. / El Mambi) and

Dallas
Invitational Results
(Grapevine,
Texas) – This year’s Dallas Invitational, a USA Judo Senior E Level Elite
Tournament, drew many of the top-ranked players in the United States to Texas
on Saturday with more than 450 athletes competing in the junior, senior and
master’s divisions at the Hilton DFW.
The women’s
70kg final pitted Ronda Rousey (Santa Monica, Calif. / NYAC), an
Olympian and Junior World Champion at 63kg, against Kayla Harrison
(Middletown, Ohio / Renshuden), the reigning National Champion in the
division.
Although
Harrison has never beaten Rousey in competition, the 16-year-old came into the
final match, both more determined and aggressive than many of Rousey’s
opponents tend to be.
After several
attacks, Rousey scored first, throwing Harrison for a koka (smallest points)
and later a yuko (quarter-point) before pinning her for ippon (instant
win).
Harrison fought
consistently throughout the match; however, making several solid attempts at
throws and escaping Rousey’s early pulls into groundwork.
In the men’s
73kg final, Ryan Reser (Colorado Springs, Colo. / Olympic Training Center
USA Judo National Training Site) fought 18-year-old Bobby Lee (Coral
Springs, Fla. / North Miami USA Judo National Training Site).
Reser won each
of his preliminary matches by ippon… more>

Something to Think About –
FYI - I wasn't aware that this act had passed until I got an email
from our community management company. I went on the web and got this
information. I’m passing this on to anyone in my email directory who
lives in Illinois. It might not be a bad idea for those not in Illinois
to take heed as well. I apologize if you already know about it.
Illinois Carbon Monoxide
Alarm Detector Act
Effective January 1, 2007,
every dwelling unit will be required to have at least one approved carbon
monoxide alarm in an operating condition within 15 feet of every room used for
sleeping purposes. Alarms can be battery powered, plug-in with battery back-up
or wired into the AC power line with a secondary battery back-up. The alarm can
be combined with smoke detecting devices if the combined unit complies with
specific standards and the alarm differentiates the hazard.
The Law
The Illinois General Assembly
has passed and the Governor has signed the Carbon Monoxide Alarm Detector Act
(Public Act 094-0741). This new law, effective January 1, 2007, requires
homeowners and landlords to install carbon monoxide detectors in all buildings
containing bedrooms and sleeping facilities.
The primary features of the law
are:
·
Every “dwelling unit” must be equipped with at
least one operable carbon monoxide alarm within 15 feet of every room used for
sleeping purposes.
·
The alarm may be combined with smoke detecting
devices provided the unit complies with respective standards and the alarm
differentiates the hazard.
·
A “dwelling unit” means a room or suite of
rooms used for human habitation, and includes single family residences,
multiple family residences, and mixed use buildings.
·
If a structure contains more than one
“dwelling unit,” an alarm must be installed within 15 feet of every sleeping
room in each “dwelling unit.”
·
The owner must supply and install all required
alarms. A landlord must ensure that the alarms are operable on the date of
initiation of a lease. The tenant is responsible for testing and maintaining
the alarm after the lease commences.
·
A landlord is required to furnish one tenant
per dwelling unit with written information regarding alarm testing and
maintenance.
·
Willful failure to install or maintain in
operating condition any alarm is a Class B criminal misdemeanor.
·
The Act does exempt certain residential units
from the requirement. Those residential units in a building that (i) does not
rely on combustion of fossil fuel for heat, ventilation or hot water; (ii) is
not connected to a garage; and (iii) is not sufficiently close to any
ventilated source of carbon monoxide to receive carbon monoxide from that
source OR a residential unit that is not sufficiently close to any source of
carbon monoxide so as to be at risk of receiving carbon monoxide from that
source, as determined by the local building commissioner shall NOT require
carbon monoxide detectors.
