EDITORIAL –

The Wisconsin Judo Hall of Fame:  On January 27th, Wisconsin Judo, Inc. hosted a dinner to honor two giants of Wisconsin Judo as the first inductees to the Wisconsin Judo Hall of Fame.  The idea of the Hall of Fame is to honor the Judo pioneers of the 50’s and 60’s, said Brett Wood-Taylor, President of Wisconsin Judo, Inc.  Its first two inductees were Neal Rosenberg of Milwaukee and Ron Hansen of Appleton (currently living in North Carolina).  They received a beautiful statuette of two Judoka in action and their names will be permanently engraved in a plaque honoring each inductee.  The idea of the Hall of Fame was to bring together the many judokas of Wisconsin who were students or were coached by Neal and Ron.   Over 30 friends gathered at Alioto’s Restaurant in Wauwatosa to honor and relate personal stories of how their lives were changed by these two instructors.  They individually and collectively brought together hundreds of judoka from all walks of life, who competed, coached, and refereed under their watchful eyes.  They taught these students the philosophies of Jigoro Kano of maximum efficiency and minimum effort AND mutual welfare and benefit for all.  It is a testament to their teaching that so many of these students continue the legacy started by Neal and Ron to give back to the sport, to teach a younger generation of Judokas and to mentor leadership to the next generation of Wisconsin judokas.

The Hall of Fame was the brain child of Brett, Jim Peterson, Mark Frankel, John and Cindy Peterson and others whose vision was to bring Judo families closer together, to recognize

excellence in their senseis, to make Judo better for everyone.  While there will be no permanent home for those honored, at least not right now, the honorees will be featured in the Wisconsin Judo website with photos and a bio on each, telling a story of dedication, a love of Judo that oft times transcended family and friends.  Congratulations to both Neal and Ron for this honor – so well deserved.

Correction:  Dr Ashida received his 9th Dan from USJF, not the Kodokan.  The editor regrets the error.

LOCAL NEWS

From the IJI President:

We are finalizing our preparations for the Sunday, February 18, 2007 Illinois State Open Judo Championships (see attached flyer).  Please consider supporting this event.  In addition to athletes, coaches and referees participating on competition day, we welcome any volunteers for setting up the contest areas and technical tables the night before, February 17th, at the Yorkville Middle School, 702 Game Farm Road, Yorkville, Illinois.  Three Illinois clubs--Yorkville Judo Club, Tohkon Judo Academy, and Gurnee Judo Club--have volunteered to manage one of the three technical tables each, but they could always use help manning their tables at this all-day event.  Please contact me if you would like to contribute to our first Illinois State Championship in seven years.  Thanks, Tim Schultheis, (847)244-7847 or tschulth@warpnet.net

USA Judo News
Complete coverage of these articles available at the USA Judo website.
Click on the link http://www.usjudo.org/    and click on the What's New page to see all the recent news items.  The items listed below may or may not be linked already.  To get further information on any of these stories, it is better to go to the USA Judo website.

I am attaching the entire USA JUDO Breaking News articles stream of four articles.  It is worth the read here as well as going to the USA Judo articles and getting the complete news.  This news of the US team at the British Open is exceptional.  4 medals on the first day (1 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze), 7 on the second (4 golds, 1 silver, 2 bronze).  This effort is unprecedented in the history of USA Judo and bodes well for these athletes as they vie for the World Championships in Rio de Janiero, BRA in September and the Olympic Games in Beijing, CHI next year.

In another story, there is a very strong possibility of a US team going to Cuba for the Jose Ramon Rodriquez (MEN) and the Golden Judoguis (WOMEN) Championships in Havana, Cuba in April/May with a training camp to follow.  This would mark the first time a US team is going to CUBA in over 10 years.  Realistically, the road to gold will be through Cuba.  The Cuban Women are some of the best in the world.  They generally medal (usually first) at the World’s and Olympic Games.  For our athletes to be successful, competing and training with them provides a unique opportunity for excellence.

Team USA Sweeps Women’s Divisions at British Open

Americans take seven medals on second day

After a successful first day at the British Open in London, the USA Judo Team swept the gold medals in the women’s divisions on Sunday and also took the men’s heavyweight title.

The four gold medals, combined with a silver and two bronzes, made this event the most successful day at a European event for a U.S. Team since the 1984 Austrian Open when the U.S. women won seven medals.

Jeanette Rodriguez (48kg) and Franchesca Durand (52kg), both of Coral Springs, Fla. and the USA Judo National Training Site won titles in their respective divisions.  Valerie Gotay (Harlingen, Texas / Harlingen USA Judo National Training Site / 57kg) and Kirk Hoffmann (Colorado Springs, Colo. / Olympic Training Center USA Judo National Training Site / +100kg) also each won gold… more>

British Open Day 2 Preview

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – After Team USA won four medals during the first day of competition at the British Open on Saturday in London, the Americans will continue their quest to reach the podium on Sunday when the women’s 48kg, 52kg, 57kg and men’s 81kg, 90kg, 100kg and +100kg divisions will be contested.

Among the U.S. competitors to watch, Valerie Gotay (Harlingen, Texas / Harlingen USA Judo National Training Site / 57kg) and Daniel McCormick (Wakefield, Mass. / Team FORCE / +100kg) are both returning bronze medalists.

Senior National Champions Jeanette Rodriguez (Coral Springs, Fla. / North Miami USA Judo National Training Site / 48kg) and Carrie Chandler (Glenville, N.Y. / NYAC / Jason Morris Judo Center / 52kg) also will be among the Americans to watch on Sunday… more>

Rousey Wins British Open; Team USA Takes Four Medals in Day 1

Ronda Rousey (Wakefield, Mass. / NYAC / Pedro’s Judo Center / 63kg) took her fourth European title during the past year with a gold medal at the British Open in London on Saturday.

Rousey reeled threw her first two matches with little problem, winning both by ippon (instant win) to advance to the semifinal against Sarah Clark (GBR)

The last time the two met, Rousey was a 17-year-old at the Athens Olympic Games.  The youngest athlete in the judo competition, Rousey picked up a win over Clark en route to her ninth-place finish.

Although the two haven’t fought since, both rapidly ascended the world rankings.  Rousey, now 19, is the fourth-ranked athlete in the world while Clark won last year’s European Championships to move up to sixth.

The match was one of the best battles in the women’s division all day as both players fought strategically and neither was able to produce a score sending the match into Golden Score (overtime).

The back-and-forth attacks continued for just over a minute before Rousey threw Clark with a drop o uchi (dropping leg throw) to win the match by a koka (smallest points)… more>

British Open Day 1 Early Results

Ronda Rousey, Jeremy Liggett and Justin Flores are among the athletes fighting tonight for medals at the British Open in London.  For more results from the early rounds, visit http://www.usjudo.org/2007BritishOpenDay1EarlyResults.asp

Open Day 1 Preview, Photos and Draw Sheets
As the British Open, a USA Judo B-Level Tournament kicks off on Saturday, 19 Americans will compete against a field of more than 130 athletes in the first day’s divisions in London.

Among the highlights, expect one of the hottest matches of the day to be Ronda Rousey (Wakefield, Mass. / NYAC / Pedro’s Judo Center), the #4-ranked athlete in the world at 63kg vs. #6 Sarah Clark (GBR) in a likely semifinal.

Former World Team member at 66kg, Justin Flores (Glenville, N.Y. / Jason Morris Judo Center / San Shi) returns to European competition for the first time in two years. In addition to fighting in the day’s largest division, his first fight will be a rematch of his U.S. Open final against Jean-Rene Badrick (GBR), the 17-year-old who ousted nearly all of the top Americans at the tournament....

19.  I had to subject the subject to a series of tests.

20.  How can I intimate this to my most intimate friend?

Let's face it - English is a crazy language.

§         There is no egg in eggplant, nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple.

§         English muffins weren't invented in England or French fries in France.

§         Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat.

§         We take English for granted but if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.

§         And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham?

§         If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn't the plural of booth, beeth? One goose, 2 geese. So one moose, 2 meese?  One index, 2 indices?

§         Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend?

§         If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it?

§         If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught?

§         If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat?

§         Sometimes I think all the English speakers should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane.

§         In what language do people recite at a play and play at a recital? Ship by truck and send cargo by ship? Have noses that run and feet that smell?

§         How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites?

§         You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out and in which, an alarm goes off by going on.

§         English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race, which, of course, is not a race at all That is why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible.

§         Why doesn't "Buick" rhyme with "quick"

You lovers of the English language might enjoy this.  here is a two-letter word that perhaps has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that is "UP."

§         It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP?

§         At a meeting, why does a topic come UP?

§         Why do we speak UP and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report?

§         We call UP our friends. And we use it to brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver, we warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen.

§         We lock UP the house and some guys fix UP the old car.

§         At other times the little word has real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses.

§         To be dressed is one thing, but to be dressed UP is special.

§         And this UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP. We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night.

§         We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP! To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look the word UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4th of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions. If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more.

§         When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP. When the sun comes out we say it is clearing UP.

§         When it rains, it wets the earth and often messes things UP. When it doesn't rain for awhile, things dry UP.

§         One could go on and on, but I'll wrap it UP, for now my time is UP, so........... it is time to shut UP.....!

Oh . One more thing:
What is the first thing you do in the morning & the last thing you do at night? U-P?
