2007 IJI State Championship Results

Illinois Judo, Inc., USA Judo's state organization held its first Illinois State Open Judo Championships in 7 years.  Congratulations to all the 182 athletes, who competed, medaled or won in the 2007 State Championships.  See attached results - above.  The state championships were held on February 18, 2007 in Yorkville, Illinois.  Illinois and border state club coaches, referees, volunteers, and parents worked together to conduct a first-class event.  Plans are already being made for next year's Illinois State Championships.

Lee Munster from Cohen’s Judo just won the Illinois State Wrestling Championships at 119 lbs.  He is a freshman at Grant High School in Fox Lake, Illinois.   Munster, a top judo athlete from the Midwest, cross trains between Judo and wrestling, which is very common among athletes today.  Congratulations Lee.

IOC Adopts Consensus Statement on Sexual Harassment and Abuse in Sport

The Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) today adopted a Consensus Statement on “Sexual Harassment and Abuse in Sport.”

This unique document defines the problems, identifies the risk factors and provides guidelines for prevention and resolution. The aim of the Consensus is to improve the health and protection of athletes through the promotion of effective preventive policy as well as to increase the awareness of these problems among the people in the entourage of the athletes.

Research indicates that sexual harassment and abuse happen in all sports and at all levels, with a greater prevalence in elite sport.  Members of the athlete’s entourage who are in positions of power and authority appear to be the primary perpetrators.  Research also demonstrates that sexual harassment and abuse in sport seriously and negatively impact athletes’ physical and psychological health.  They can damage performance and lead to athlete drop-out … more>

Rousey Wins Vienna World Cup at 70kg

(Wakefield, Mass.) – Less than a year ago, Ronda Rousey (Wakefield, Mass. / NYAC / USA Judo National Training Site at Pedro’s Judo Center) became the first U.S. woman to win an A-Level judo event in nearly 10 years when she took the title at the Birmingham World Cup in the 63kg division.

After winning the British Open three weeks ago, Rousey opted to fight up to 70kg at this week’s Vienna World Cup in Austria, surprising her competitors by not only her entrance in the division, but also by going 4-0 to win the title on Sunday.

Rousey had a first-round bye before beating 2005 European Junior Champion Kerstin Thiele (GER) by ippon (instant win) in the second round.  In her next match, Rousey also won by ippon against Jennifer Pitzanti (ITA), a fifth-place finisher at the 2006 European Juniors.

In the semifinals, Rousey fought 2006 Pan American Champion Yalennis Castillo (CUB)more>

USA Judo Announces Three New Training Sites

USA Judo is pleased to announce that three sites have been named as USA Judo National Training Sites – Jason Morris Judo Center in Glenville, N.Y.; Pedro’s Judo Center in Wakefield, Mass.; and San Jose State University in San Jose, Calif.

USA Judo has been presented a great opportunity to bring judo to new levels of competitive success by the funding the USOC has given us to continue the growth of USA Judo National Training Sites,” said USA Judo CEO Jose H. Rodriguez (Colorado Springs, Colo.)  “These USA Judo National Training sites are offering athletes not only opportunities to train with the best, but they also are offering opportunities to attend school, and have housing as well as medical care.”

The new training sites join the existing three USA Judo National Training Sites in Harlingen, Texas; North Miami, Fla.; and the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.

“Think about it.  Would anyone of us have thought two years ago that we would have the likes of Mike Swain, Eddie Liddie, Jimmy Pedro, Jason Morris, Israel Hernandez, German Velazco and Jhonny Prado training close to 80% of our best athletes in the nation under the banner of USA Judo?” Rodriguez pondered. “Now add to that Pat Burris, now directing our Coaching Education and Certification program, coordinating that what is been taught to our top senior and junior athletes is also been taught to our grassroot coaches and Jim Hrbek as our Junior Athlete Performance Director… more>

Something to Think About –

Greetings:

Stunned by the generosity of the written word, humbled to the core by your kind and generous spirit. innate modesty  and a certain amount of shyness transcends gratitude to each of you. Please forgive me for not having some of the e-mail addresses of those that contributed to the article. Please allow me some time to live up to your kind words.

This Friday we go at it again with about an 8 hour surgery and then a 6-8 week recovery time. Please forgive my inability to contribute to Judo for the balance of February and most of March.

Your friendship over the years has really allowed my heart to have a fighting spirit in staying alive and the love of family and your friendship likewise.

In the spirit of life itself, bless you.

Signs of a Stroke
This note is being placed here and others like it because one never knows when these things might happen.  It could happen at a dojo to your sensei, at a shiai to player or spectator.  We all need to take responsibility in knowing simple first aid signs and procedures.  It could save your life or the life of a loved one.

It only takes a minute to read this...
A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.
RECOGNIZING A STROKE
Thank God for the sense to remember the "3" steps, STR . Read and Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.
Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

S * Ask the individual to SMILE.
T * Ask the person to TALK to SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE , (Coherently) (i.e. . . It is sunny out today)
R * Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS .

*NOTE:
Another 'sign' of a stroke is this : Ask the person to 'stick' out their tongue. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other, that is also an indication of a stroke. If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call 911 immediately !! and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this e-mail sends it to 10 people; you can bet that at least one life will be saved.
