SEOUL

U.S. Olympic
Committee Announces Date for the 14th Annual F.L.A.M.E. Program
The United States Olympic Committee
(USOC) announced today that the14th annual F.L.A.M.E. (Finding
Leaders Among Minorities Everywhere) program will take place at the U.S.
Olympic Complex in Colorado Springs, August 2-5, 2007.
For the past 13 years, the
USOC, in partnership with its dedicated Olympic sponsors, has empowered
minority students with this one-of-a-kind experience.
The F.L.A.M.E. program was
developed to help educate, encourage and demonstrate to minority youth that any
goal is attainable through commitment and perseverance. The young men and
women selected to participate have already demonstrated the pursuit of
excellence within their own communities through achievements in academics,
sport, leadership and community service.
Once in the F.L.A.M.E.
program, they will be exposed to the ideals and values of the Olympic Movement,
thereby furthering their personal and professional development.
“The F.L.A.M.E. program
provides an excellent platform for sharing the Olympic Ideals and Values with
minority youth from throughout the country as they learn about the diverse
backgrounds of their fellow participants,” said USOC Chief Executive Officer
Jim Scherr. “We are grateful to our sponsors (Tyson, Hilton Family of Hotels
and Visa) for their continued support of the development of America’s future
leaders.”
During the four-day program
in August, F.L.A.M.E. participants will live like Olympic hopefuls, but without
the rigorous training. They will reside in the Olympic Training Center
dormitory, eat at the Athlete Dining Hall and have opportunities to interact
with athletes throughout each day. The itinerary includes motivational
speakers (Olympians, Paralympians, educators and business executives),
networking and financial responsibility workshops, interactive sport
demonstrations, field trips to local attractions and information on how to
apply for the USOC College Internship Program.
For many, the F.L.A.M.E.
experience is life-changing. F.L.A.M.E alumnus and Olympian, Ivan Lee (fencing,
2004), was first exposed to the sport of fencing at the Peter Westbrook
Foundation in Brooklyn, New York, when he followed his cousin to a training
practice. But it was through his experience at the F.L.A.M.E. program in
1996 that Lee realized any goal is attainable through following the Olympic
Ideals of persistence, vision, focus, discipline and commitment. He is
currently working in New York and training for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
“Through F.L.A.M.E., I
learned that even a young African-American from Brooklyn can become an Olympian
in the sport of fencing. The F.L.A.M.E. program has opened many doors for
me and I hope to give back to the program as a presenter in 2007,” said
Lee.
Previous speakers at the
F.L.A.M.E. program have included the late five-time Olympian and two-time
silver medalist Willye White (1956, ’60, ’64, ’68, ‘72); the legendary
10,000 meter gold medalist Billy Mills (1960); two-time gold medalist in
taekwondo Steven Lopez (2000, ’04); Paralympic track & field bronze
medalist April Holmes (2004) and many more. Presenters for the
2007 session will be announced in the coming weeks.
How to Apply
Qualified applicants must be between
the ages of 18-21 and be entering their sophomore or junior year in college in
fall 2007. Additionally, they must have a minimum college grade point
average (GPA) of 2.75. Applications are available online at
www.usolympicteams.com/flame or by calling the F.L.A.M.E. Committee at
719-866-4604. The application deadline is May 18, 2007, and selection
announcements will be made no later than June 30, 2007.

USA Judo Coach Certification and
Education Announcement from Director Pat Burris
Earning the designation of Professional Judo Coach is
a rewarding experience. During the process of becoming certified, you
will gain knowledge and experience which will be valuable to you and to your
athletes. USA Judo Coach Certifications signify exceptional competence
and credibility and identify you as a professional instructor. You
are a part of a distinguished group of coaches certified by the United States
Olympic Committees NGB, USA Judo.
We have taken steps to make
maintaining your certification easier; you are no longer required to attend a
clinic each year to keep your certification active. As a Professional
Coach, you have a responsibility to continuously improve your knowledge and
experience through annual continuing education as is the standard in other
professions. We encourage you to challenge yourself to excel
to higher levels of certification.
The leadership of USA Judo has
taken steps to move this organization into a more professional mode in line
with the directive of the United States Olympic Committee. While change
is often difficult, the Coaches Certification and Education Program has
accepted the challenge given to us by our leaders and by the USOC and we will
move this program forward… more>

interesting. KN
Thought you might
find this interesting. I did. Got from a former club member who

Hawk,
Thanks I read every word. Interesting that William howard Taft (heaviest of all
presidents) practiced judo with Roosevelt. My great grandpa was his head chef
at the White House, I wonder if my grandpa ever was asked to practice judo??
Chris
Just a few idle
thoughts:
The martial arts
used to be much more devastating than they are today. The reason for this
is mass communication. The arts used to be secret and there were no movies
and few written records for one to study, so any move that you had was a total
surprise to your opponent! It was a great honor to be selected to be
trained as a warrior, just as it was a great honor for one to serve an
apprenticeship with a master craftsman. Communication and easy travel
have slightly diluted the effectiveness of the martial arts the same is true of
craftsmanship. I found this bit of Judo history;
