From the IJI President:

Just as we completed our successful Illinois Judo Open State Championships last month, we followed that event with another high-participation IJI Open Workout, hosted by John Gusman at the Fox Valley Judo Club in Naperville several weekends ago.  Our IJI Open Workouts, sanctioned by IJI and organized by the IJI Junior Development Chair, Brett Wolf, continue to be terrific events.  For $5 (proceeds directly to IJI, now listed as a non-for-profit organization with the State of Illinois), athletes take turns with randori against other outstanding IJI and other states' athletes.  The Open Workouts start with warm-ups, then turn immediately to randori.  We have mixed the workouts with brief question & answer periods when we have either elite athletes or prominent referees in attendance.  Our next two IJI Open workouts are:  Apr 21st, Menomonee and May 20th, O'Fallon, IL (the day after the N-S Illinois Tournament).

On May 19th, Eiko Sheperd and Quentin Thompson are holding the annual North-South Illinois Judo Tournament in Glen Carbon, IL.  Let's support that event.  We will hold our next IJI Board Meeting at the tournament site, 09:00-10:00 AM.  Our meeting agenda will be:  Executive and Special Committee reports, sanction management, and scheduling next year's Illinois Judo Open State Championships.

Let's mark our schedules for the Annual Tohkon Classic, our largest Illinois Tournament of the year, scheduled for June 9th at UIC in Chicago.  We will post the Tohkon Classic flyer on the IJI Homepage by April 1st.

In the meantime, here are a couple of administrative announcements.  Please ensure that your club is registered with USA Judo, that your club coaches have current coaching certification (see USA Judo Homepage at http://www.usjudo.org  for more info), that special events--camps, clinics, and tournaments--have IJI sanctions.  The sanction process is easy.  Send your event's flyer with waiver and $10, written to USA Judo, to our IJI Secretary, Mary Gail Ford.  Her email is mgford@comcast.net.   Of course, without proper club registration, coach certification, or an outstanding payment due to either IJI or USA Judo, we cannot issue a sanction.  Let's check our club rosters against the IJI list of current memberships.  It is in all of our interest to ensure that our members have joined or renewed their USA Judo membership, which is easy to do on-line from the USA Judo Homepage.  Again, Mary Gail is happy to assist club coaches as necessary.   Lastly, some financial info pending our Treasurer's full report at the next IJI Board Meeting--we are applying for IJI Board insurance this month, approximately $500/year and our net profit after expenses from the Illinois State Tournament was just over $1,000.

Results of the 24th New York Open Judo Championship

Date: March 10, 2007  Location:  New York City

155 competitors took to the mat on March 10, 2007 at the 24th Annual New York Open Judo Championship  hosted by the New York Athletic Club in New York City   The most competitive international Judo tournament in the Americas drew the finest teams and athletes from 27 countries to compete in New York City.  Held each March, the New York Open Judo Championship is an elite B-level men's tournament sanctioned by the USAJudo (United States Judo, Inc.).  A purse of $1,000 was awarded to the first place winners of each weight division.   "The New York Open Judo Championship is one of the best and toughest Judo competitions in this hemisphere, which brought together 155 athletes from 27 countries to compete for the honor of being a New York Open Champion," said Dr. Mel Appelbaum, Tournament Director.   You can find more information at the official website:  www.newyorkopenjudo.com.

Senior Competition Opportunity in Venezuela

The Venezuelan Judo Federation has invited U.S. athletes to compete in the Juegos Deportives del ALBA in Caracas, Venezuela from May 9-12.

A maximum of 18 U.S. athletes (one for each of the Pan American weight divisions) may compete in this event and will receive room and board as well as ground transportation from the Venezuelan Judo Federation. 

Many top competitors from throughout South America will be in attendance, including both Cuba and Argentina who will be competing in preparation for the Pan American Championships, May 24-27 in Montreal, Canada.

Junior and Senior National Champions Among the Competitors at Middle School, High School and Collegiate Nationals This Weekend

More than 400 athletes are expected to compete at the USA Judo Middle School, High School and Collegiate National Championships this weekend at the Pharmed Arena at Florida International University in Miami, including a number of top-ranked junior and senior players.

The Middle School and High School Nationals will be held March 24 at Pharmed Arena with preliminary rounds beginning at 9 a.m.  Middle school final matches and high school bronze medal matches will be held during the preliminary session.  Gold medal final matches for the High School Championships will begin at 4:30 p.m.

Collegiate Nationals will be held from approximately 9:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. on March 25. Immediately following the Collegiate Nationals a team of seven top-ranked U.S. high school athletes will face off against a Japanese High-School All-Star Team in a friendly team competition.

Updated USA Judo Coaches List, As of March 20

As of March 20, 2007, the coaches listed on the USA Judo Coaches List (available at http://www.usjudo.org/coachingnotes.asp) have renewed their certifications for 2007. The 2007 certificates for these coaches have been issued or are in the process of being issued. If you have a question about your certification, or if you feel your Coach Level has been listed incorrectly, please contact Pat Burris at Burris7276@sbcglobal.net and he will work to remedy the problem. If there is a red “HOLD” next to your name, your USA Judo Membership is expired. Please renew your USA Judo Membership electronically on the Membership Page of this Web site. As soon as your membership has been processed, Mr. Burris will complete your USA Judo Coach Certification. 

Coaches who will be coaching from the coaches’ chair at USA Judo events are required to have a 2007 USA Judo Coach ID Card. If you need to order one, please contact Mr. Burris at Burris7276@sbcglobal.net.

Senior Nationals Overflow Hotel

The Wyndham Miami Airport has been designated as the overflow for the USA Judo Senior National Championships, April 20-21 in Miami, Fla.   This rate is available for April 18-22; however, a limited number of rooms are available and must be reserved by April 1.  Rooms are available for $119 per night for up to four occupants, reduced from a standard rate of $189 per night.  To reserve your room call 305.870.8141 and ask for the Judo Rate.

USA Judo to Reward Club Coaches with a Seminar at the Olympic Training Center

USA Judo is pleased to announce a program that will reward club coaches who sign up 100 athletes or more to be members of USA Judo in 2007 by providing one coach per club that has 100 athletes registered with USA Judo by Nov. 1 with a trip to Colorado Springs to attend a USA Judo National Seminar conducted by several members of the USA Judo National Training Site Coaching and U.S. Olympic Committee High Performance Division Staffs.

Each winning club will receive one round-trip ticket on United Airlines to Colorado Springs for the Seminar which will be held in late November or early December.

Couldn’t make it to New York City for the New York Open last weekend?  With more than 150 competitors from 27 nations, this year’s medal rounds included a number of top quality matches, including:

• Athens Olympian Taraje Williams-Murray (Bronx, N.Y. / NYAC / Spartak Sports Club) returning to the 60kg division for the first time in more than a year and facing off against reigning champion Ronnie Talledo (PER) in the gold medal match.
• Aaron Cohen (Buffalo Grove, Ill. / NYAC / Cohen’s Judo) won his second New York Open title in a close match against Harry St. Leger (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Starrett Judo) in the 81kg division.
• Less than six months after moving up to the 66kg division, Junior World Team member Jeremy Liggett (Glenville, N.Y. / NYAC / USA Judo National Training Site at the Jason Morris Judo Center) capped off an impressive day with a 10-minute marathon bronze medal match against 2006 Senior Nationals silver medalist Nate Torra (El Cerrito, Calif. / NYAC / East Bay Judo Institute).
• Hashbaatar Tsagaanbaatar (MGL) worked on both his judo and gymnastics skills in the 66kg gold medal match against Kenny Hashimoto (Thornton, Colo. / Northglenn Judo) whose New York Open performance moved him back into the #1 U.S. ranking.

Jason Morris Inducted into Local Wrestling Hall of Fame

Jason Morris (Glenville, N.Y.), 2008 U.S. Olympic Judo Team Head Coach Nominee and head coach of the USA Judo National Training Site at the Jason Morris Judo Center, was recognized for his achievements as a former All-American wrestler at the Section 2 Wrestling Hall of Fame banquet on March 11 in Scotia, N.Y.

Section 2 encompasses the greater Albany area and has produced many World and Olympic caliber wrestlers, including Morris’s fellow honorees Jeff Blatnick, a 1984 Olympic Champion, and Kristie Marano, a three-time Wrestling World Champion who got her start on the judo mat, winning her first Senior National medal at the age of 13. 

Morris was one of 23 inductees that also included Olympians Frank Famiano (1984) and Andy Seras (1988).

Something to Think About – 

PHOTO RADAR – the notice is 2 years old but enforcement may pick up.  Watch it!!  Thanks Len for your input – from one who knows J.

Illinois will begin using photo radar in freeway work zones in July. Second offense tickets are $1,000 with license suspension. Beginning in July the State of Illinois will use speed cameras in areas designated as "Work Zones" on major freeways. Anyone caught by these devices will be mailed a $375.00 ticket for the FIRST offense, but he SECOND offense will cost $1000.00 and comes with a 90-Day suspension.  Drivers will also receive demerit points against their license, which allows insurance companies to raise their rates.  This represents the harshest penalty structure yet for a city or state using PHOTO enforcement. The State will begin with TWO camera vans issuing tickets in work zones with speed limits lowered to 45 MPH. Photographs of both the Driver's face and License plate are taken.

My guess is that the next step will be toll booth interval speed control (getting from one toll booth to the next too fast will raise the red flag for a ticket).  KN

It's only going to get worse. Also, be aware that many Municipalities are taking photos at major intersections just like the one at Western and Peterson in Chicago. This intersection will take photos of cars running lights, speeding and illegal no turn on reds. The tollways, well I already mentioned this to you before, have the capability of monitoring your speed as your transponder goes off, they know it's you. This enf. tool will be a reality soon. Don't feel safe if you see a bunch of flashes on the interstates or intersections and haven’t received a ticket in the mail. It normally takes several months.

THINGS YOU NEVER KNEW YOUR CELL PHONE COULD DO.

There are a few things that can be done in times of grave emergencies.  Your mobile phone  can actually be a life saver or an emergency tool for survival. Check out the things that you can do with it:

FIRST:  Emergency

The Emergency Number worldwide for Mobile is 112. If you find yourself out of the coverage area of your mobile; network and there is an emergency, dial 112 and the mobile will search any existing network to establish the emergency number for you, and interestingly this number 112 can be dialed even if the keypad is locked. Try it out.

SECOND:  Have you locked your keys in the car?

Does your car have remote keyless entry? This may come in handy someday.  Good reason to own a cell phone: If you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are at home, call someone at home on their cell phone from your cell phone. Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the person at your home press the unlock button, holding it near the mobile phone on their end. Your car will unlock. Saves someone from having to drive your keys to you. Distance is no object. You could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach someone who has the other "remote" for your car, you can unlock the doors (or the trunk).

THIRD:  Hidden Battery Power

Imagine your cell battery is very low. To activate, pressthe keys *3370#.  Your cell will restart with this reserve and the instrument will show a 50% increase in battery. This reserve will get charged when you charge your cell next time.

FOURTH:  How to disable a STOLEN mobile phone?

To check your Mobile phone's serial number, key in the following digits on your phone: * # 0 6 # A 15 digit code will appear on the screen. This number is unique to your handset. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe. When your phone get stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them this code. They will then be able to block your handset so even if the thief changes the SIM card, your phone will be totally useless. You probably won't get your phone back, but at least you know that whoever stole it can't use/sell it either. If everybody does this, there would be no point in people stealing mobile phones.

And Finally....

FIFTH:  411 director assistance

Cell phone companies are charging us $1.00 to $1.75 or more for 411 information calls when they don't have to. Most of us do not carry a telephone directory in our vehicle, which makes this situation even more of a problem. When you need to use the 411 information option, simply dial: (800) FREE 411, or (800) 373-3411 without incurring any charge at all. Program this into your cell phone now.

This is the kind of information people don't mind receiving, so pass it on to your family and friends.
