EDITORIAL – A Judo Letter
I received this anonymous letter from Deborah Fergus, Chairperson of the USJA Women’s Committee.   Why does USA Judo, USJF and USJA only support the elite athletes in their push for Olympic Gold, World and National titles?  The question, however, is not should we support these tier 2 and 3 elite athletes – we do.  The question is how much to do we support them.  That is probably the real reason for the frustration I detect in her words.  And these words are not limited to what I call the “other” elite athletes.  They should also include the “bubble” athletes – those who always come in just under the medals.

I sympathize with the writer’s frustrations.  In too many situations, a player, maturing late, starting Judo late, finds themselves fighting an uphill battle to reach the top.  And while not fair, it is reality, it is the luck of the draw, it is being “born a day late and a dollar short.”  It is no different than the struggling athlete who has to work twice as hard as the elite athlete because they lack the natural ability their opponent has.  It is no different than the athlete who comes from modest means and has to have fund raisers to support their training while their counterpart has a war chest that could support several up and coming elite players plus themselves.  It is no different than trying to find the right coach, right club, right training partners while that #1 has all the coaching, club support and training partners they will ever need.  Sometimes it IS just timing and sometimes it is just plain luck.  But most of the time, hard work, ethics and focus is what will drive you to your goals.  And when you are finally recognized, everything you wish you had will be yours.

Secondly, I see it as a matter of the best use of funds.  Who will utilize those limited funds most effectively, train the hardest, have the best chance to medal, appreciate support the most, then come back and train the next generation.  Does USA Judo fund everyone or do they fund only those athletes who have the best chance of winning a medal.  What percentage of funds should be used by elite athletes versus grass roots programs?  It seems to me that USA Judo should be concentrating most of its limited funds on developing our best athletes.  USA Judo must require unequivocal dedication to the training program and travel itinerary to give our athletes the exposure necessary to qualify and be successful at the international levels.  If our players cannot win at the Nationals, how can they win at the PJU Championships?  If our players cannot win at the PJU Championships, how can they win at the World Championships or Olympic Games?  Of course the question begs itself, then, why bother to compete.  The simple answer is you have to take your best shot by sending athletes who have the ability and desire to win.  No one has a crystal ball – everyone can have a great day or a bad day.  We have to hope that our best day is our opponents worse day.

Thirdly, too many athletes want to make the Olympic team, the World team or be a part of the National team.  The operative words here are “want to make”.  Let me emphasize, they merely want to “make the team.”  While making the team is an accomplishment in and of itself, it does not define the desire to want to win a medal by beating the reigning World or Olympic Champion, to be the best of class or to be ranked the #1 player in the world.  Far too often, I see these expectations as a self-fulfilling prophesy.   This is too bad because we are considered the richest country in the world.  Everyone (even France) wants the United States to be successful in Judo.  When Judo is successful in the United States, the entire worldwide Judo community wins.

Lastly, why not me?  While I do not know who this person is, I can speculate that she started Judo later in life, say teenager or early 20’s.  She had natural abilities in Judo and most importantly an inherent natural drive to exceed her expectations.  She did not know how she would do when she started Judo, but she was winning at local and state events, she was on the bubble at Nationals for several years.  Working hard, she eventually placed at Nationals, maybe not taking first but being in the hunt.  This lead to some PJU and European trips with a modicum of success but as she continued in this quest, her techniques became better and competition skills improved commensurate with her determination.  My guess is that she was competing all over the country and world
mostly at her own expense.  At the end of the year, adding up her living and judo expenses, it could have broken even or could have been a negative cash flow.  She probably received some financial aid from the local or state organizations which made her financial balance sheet zero.  This young lady, determined to excel, could very well have been a top elite player in her prime had she started earlier.  But she is on the back end of her prime and she want to “go for it”.  This will be her last hurrah – 2008 is in her sights and she can taste it.  Is she ready?

Ready or not, her effort and dedication should be an inspiration to every aspiring athlete, Judo or otherwise, to do the best you can, never lose sight of your goals, train until it hurts and “hurt” until you win.  And while winning is the ultimate goal, because she is a bit older, her outlook on life is well grounded in reality.  She knows it is an uphill fight but she will put out 100% effort.  She will not be deterred until it is finally determined who will be on that team.  If she makes it, she will dedicate the next year to training and be an inspiration to the rest of her teammates.  If she does not make it, she will move on in life, be successful in her career and go back to training the next generation – for in Judo, she has found a home, comfortable and satisfied that her dreams have been fulfilled far beyond a medal, beyond a good work out.  She has found her Judo Nirvana.  In this, she is a true CHAMPION in Judo and in life.

Commentary

Dear Editor:

Another wonderful editorial---I found this quote on the Kodokan site--I thought it mirrored what you were saying:

*What is Judo?

*Judo is loved by all generations. You can see people of all ages from six to over eighty years, and people of all professions, nationalities and sexes enjoying Judo at the Kodokan.

*They all have their own purposes.

*Some of them want to be strong, some want to be healthy,

*some want to strengthen their mind,

*some want to appreciate the pleasant feeling after perspiring,

*some want to be able to defend themselves,

*some want to become instructors of Judo, and

*some are already devoted to training others.

*Why is Judo attracting people of all ages and people with so many different purposes? Prof. Kano created Judo from Jujutsu as the means to learn the great principle of humanity, not only to learn Waza (technique).

*He named the training institution "Kodokan". The word "Kodo" means to learn, prove and practice the principle. The fact that Prof. Kano named Judo "Kodokan Judo" shows us how he made much of the principle and made it a principal objective of life to learn.

*Prof. Kano himself said that the purpose of Judo is to strengthen body by practicing attack and defense, to complete the personality by training the mind, and finally to devote oneself to society. The principle and ideal of Judo:  “Maximum efficiency" and "Mutual welfare and benefit."

I hope you like it as much as I did.

*********

Your editorial was more than excellent.  Thank you for sharing that and it can never be said too many times. It brought me a peaceful feeling and a smile "yes, I understand what you are saying".

SO

*******

I just read your editorial and thought it was great.  The "new" Judo,  or the people that think that Judo is no different then any other sport will never realize the true rewards of this way of  life.  While I cannot say this is a religion it can help fill voids in your life that will help you to reach that ultimate goal of perfection of character, that ultimate goal "Ippon". Thanks again for these occasional thoughts.  By the way you may have inadvertently left Corrie Geier's name out of the list of winners for College Nationals.  She took 2nd is 63-kg and from Wisconsin……

OK, now go back and read the article. J ED

The Chicago Shimpo article on the Midwestern Championships

Thought you might like to see an article from one of our “CUB” reporters from The Chicago Shimpo, a local Japanese language newspaper that has been in Chicago forever – well only from November 15, 1945.  There are two sections – and you can read either one.

Ms Odagiri did a very nice job in writing an article about the Midwestern Judo Championship in our hometown.  I believe she caught the essence of what drives our judo community and interviewed a number of our top leaders locally as well as nationally.  I wish to thank Ms Odagiri for this effort and hope that more articles can be included in our local and national publications.

Ms Yasko Odagiri is a writer for The Chicago Shimpo, a local Japanese language newspaper.  She has children in Judo and is an active parent at Cohen’s Judo Club.

2007 Armed Forces Judo Team Looking for Applicants

The Armed Forces Sports Office has once again  approved the participation of an Armed Forces Judo Team in the 4th World Military Games to be held in Hyderabad, India from Oct. 14-21, 2007. The last couple years, due to military commitments and operational requirements, it has been challenging to assemble a full team for this event. Therefore, we need to start early and allow the military athletes enough time to prepare for this competition. The criteria for the selection of military Judo athletes to attend the 2007 Armed Forces Camp is as follows:

                     a. Athletes must have competed in one "A+, A, or B" level competition

                     b. Athletes must be Nationally ranked in the top 10 of their respective weight class

                     c. Athletes must finish in the top 50% of their weight class at a "C" level competition

Interested athletes must immediately notify the team's head coach, Major (P) Hector R. Morales-Negron, in order to receive training and competition recommendations in preparation for the 2007 Armed Forces Judo Camp. Experienced Judoka service members that currently do not meet the minimum standards for an invitation to camp due operational requirements still have time to acquire the points needed for an invitation. For more information please contact:

The Head Coach, MAJ(P) Hector R. Morales-Negron at Armyjudo6@aol.com or the Marine Corps Sports Director, Mr. Steve Dinote at steven.dinote@usmc.mil

MAJ MORALES WILL BE AT THE 2007 SENIOR NATIONALS INTERVIEWING CANDIDATES AND WATCHING THEIR PERFORMANCE AT THE EVENT. LOOK FOR THE CISM JUDO TABLE AT REGISTRATION

USA Judo Senior Nationals to be Webcast Live Free from Miami

For the first time ever, USA Judo is pleased to announce that the USA Judo Senior Nationals, Pan Am and World Team Trials will be Webcast live free from Miami on April 20-21, beginning at 6 p.m. EST on Friday April 20 and 5 p.m. EST on Saturday April 21.

The Webcast, which can be viewed from anywhere in the world at  www.livesportsvideo.com will include the gold medal final matches as well as the Pan Am Games and World Team Trials for divisions where needed.

"Over the last two years we have been working quietly behind the scene to pull off this offer to our USA Judo family in the United States – but just as pleasing to us is the fact that we will be working closely with the PJU to make sure that as many Caribbean and Latin American countries as possible will be able to watch our Senior Nationals free of charge. I sincerely hope that Judo clubs around the nation will gather around their screens to enjoy two great evenings of judo!"

This Webcast, besides been free of charge, also will provide judo fans from around the world the opportunity to send questions and comments to the on-air commentators – a feature that will create even more interactivity within the Webcast.

“It is our goal to continue to push the envelope of technology as it comes to the promotion and presentation of judo in our country,” said USA Judo President Dr. Ron Tripp (Norman, Okla.)  “Very soon we will be announcing a program that has been negotiated with the USOC in order to assure us great coverage of judo on both the worldwide net as well as television.”

USA Judo's top national coaches also will be interviewed throughout the Webcast as well providing color commentary.

Don’t forget to tune into www.livesportsvideo.com or www.usjudo.org on April 20 and 21 to watch America’s top judo players fight for gold and spots on this year’s Pan Am Games and World Championship Teams!
