EDITORIAL – DREAMER

Judo has become a year around sport.  This is good and bad.  In most professional sports, there are seasons, albeit, the season have been extended considerably of late with baseball going from February (spring training) to almost into November and football going from July to February.  Basketball is another that just seems to go on forever.  But Judo starts in January and ends in December with both local, National and International events highlighted in most months somewhere in the world.  For many, this is a formula for burnout.  How much can any family take with mothers, fathers, sons and daughters competing somewhere.  Of course, one does not have to attend Judo competitions year around.  In fact, for seniors, it really starts with the Senior Nationals, generally held in April but has gone into May.  This is the precursor to the other events, mainly the PJU Circuit events, PJU Championships, Worlds and Olympic Games.  Europe starts their circuits in January and generally ends in May, culminating in the European Championships in early summer.  It is about 6 months long but it is a very intensive time for athletes, referees(especially the EJU referees), and organizers.  For the US Juniors, the Circuits are generally late June, July and early August with the 4 National/International events:  USJF Nationals, USJA Nationals, USA Judo Junior Olympics, and the USA Judo Junior Open.

But what about Judo burn-out for athletes, coaches and referees.  I remember the early days of judo in Chicago, there used to be a tournament every month.   That was at a time where there was a tournament director of the organization who pretty much ran these events.  Remember Lawson Y?  Lombard HS was the site of many events in the 80’s, Wright Junior College did their share.  But those days are gone.  We essentially burned out TD’s (tournament directors) because of course it was just easier to make it happen your self rather than get a tournament team to do things for you.  On the day of competition, the TD would ask for volunteers to help set up the mat, or make sure his/her club members were there to do it.  The hospitality was done by a group of “ISSEI” or “NISEI” women, first or second generation Japanese parents who would take it upon themselves to outdo themselves to make Sushi, Teriyaki Chicken, Sashimi, rolled beef in onions, Maki-zushi, elaborate Chicken or Beef casseroles, fruit salads(cut up or balled), 7 layer salads.  And you could count on this at every tournament!!  And at the end of the day, it would not be unusual for 5th, 6th and 7th degree black belts ALL helping to get the mats back to the wrestling room and to police up the gym and make it presentable again.  And I remember our instructors driving to Detroit, Granite City(IL), Washington DC for a weekend judo tournament.  Oh, did I mention that 2 or 3 cars would pile 4 -5 kids in their station wagons, drive all night, compete for two days, then drive all night again to get back to Chicago so they could go to work at 8:00am that Monday morning.  And most of us did pretty well.

Well back to reality.  We are doing the best we can today.  There are not as many tournaments locally, but the ones we do have are run as best as possible.  Travel by planes have replaced the car as the primary mode of transportation.  And most of the food referees get are restaurant/store bought.  This is the reality of it and I just thought that you might like to know what it WAS like and for those who lived through it, to go down memory lane.

I really do not know which system is better.  All I can say is that for those who lived through the golden age of Judo – 50’s – 60’s, it was quite a trip and shaped many a Judoka’s thinking.  But times do change and I think for the most part, things are better.  In days past, Judo reigned supreme.  Most of the judoka’s were not multi-sport athletes.  It was school and judo and not necessarily in that order.  Today, kids are far more engaged in other activities like piano lessons, other sports, homework, chores.  And this is OK, they should be exposed to a variety of activities and take part in other cultural activities.  Education is more intensive today where the expectation to learn has accelerated by 1 to 2 grade levels or more.  There has to be a balance in children’s lives and it is this balance that should keep us grounded in what is really important.  Family first, education, then outside activities.  There is plenty of time for children to pick Judo as their primary activity and go for the gold.  Six is the time to have fun, “16” is the time to start to take this seriously.  The most important issue is to keep our children interested in Judo, to give back to the sport and to make sure that when they get married and have children themselves, they get their children into  Judo also.  This is the way to grow the sport and to keep it going.

LOCAL NEWS

Aaron Cohen’s hopes for a run at the Pan-American Games and World Team were dashed by Travis Stevens in the National Championships and World Trial held on Friday evening.  Stevens won the Championship and proceeded to win the best of three in the trials.  Cohen fought bravely all day in spite of knowing his father was receiving a kidney transplant that day.  It is tough enough to compete at that level without this kind of distraction.  But Cohen was determined to honor his father by competing.

Irwin Cohen’s transplant was successful and is recovering.  In the total scheme of things, this successful surgery was the big winner for the Cohen family.  I know you all join me in wishing Irwin best wishes for a speedy and complete recovery.  You may send cards to

Senior Nationals Day 2 Results

(Miami, Fla.) – Saturday was a day where many veterans defended their status in the judo scene while up-and-comers also staked their claim as the future of the sport at the USA Judo Senior National Championships at Florida International University.

Also at stake were trips to the Pan American Games (July 19-22) and World Championships (September 16-19), both in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.  Athletes who entered the event as top seeds and won the Senior Nationals automatically earned berths to the Team while top-seeded athletes who lost during the day competed in a best-of-three fight-off with the division winner.

The 48kg rivalry between Sayaka Matsumoto (El Cerrito, Calif. / NYAC / East Bay Judo Institute) and top-ranked 16-year-old Jeanette Rodriguez (Coral Springs, Fla. / USA Judo National Training Site at North Miami) continued into the finals of the Senior Nationals – a rematch of last year’s final where Rodriguez won her first title over six-time National Champion Matsumoto.

This time both athletes started the attacks quickly and continued at a frenetic pace for the duration of the five minute match, but neither athlete produced a score which sent the match into Golden Score (overtime).  Matsumoto threw Rodriguez 12 seconds into the overtime period for a yuko (quarter-point) to win the National Title and force a best-of-three fight-off for the Pan Am Games and World Team slots.

“Losing the first match brought my hopes down a little bit, but it was just a medal round and our goal was to make sure we won the Trials, so I talked to my coach after the match and I felt better and ready to get back out there,” Rodriguez said.

True to form, their first Pan Am Trials went into Golden Score as well, but Rodriguez took the win, throwing Matsumoto for a yuko 90 seconds into the match.  The second round revolved not around scores, but more so penalties as Matsumoto threw Rodriguez for a waza-ari and Rodriguez was handed three penalties, equaling a second waza-ari for Matsumoto and ending the match.

After a brief break, Rodriguez and Matsumoto were at it again for their fourth match in a two-hour span.  This time Matsumoto was given the first penalty which meant a lead for Rodriguez who later threw Matsumoto for a waza-ari (half-point) with just over a minute remaining.  Matsumoto pulled Rodriguez immediately into an armbar, however, hoping to clinch the match, but deftly escaped the hold.  Matsumoto attacked again, instantly throwing Rodriguez for a yuko (quarter-point)… more>
