EDITORIAL – GRADUATION
It is graduation time and
many of our judoka and their families are in transition from Home life to
Independent life. Whether that be off to college or off to a job, this
milestone is significant for most of our young men and women who now must make
their own decisions about what they are going to do for the rest of their
lives. These are tough decisions especially in today’s society where the
differences between good and evil, luck and disaster, fortune and famine are
but a hair’s breath away from misfortune or extreme providence. Many say
that there is no such thing as luck and that you make your own luck with hard
work, perseverance and focus. While luck can play a part in one’s
destiny, one should not depend on blind luck to determine anything.
There is luck in not
drawing the Olympic Gold medalist in your first round. Put another way,
drawing this person will assure you a spot in the repachage
finals and a shot for the bronze. There is luck being in the right place
at the right time. Put another way, knowing where to be can put you in
the right place at the right time. There is luck in starting judo early
in life. Put another way, starting judo as an older player can make you
appreciate Judo’s philosophy and training methodologies much better.
I have known folks at
both ends of the spectrum. I have known folks who started judo as kids
and burned out. I have known adults who have started judo as teens or in
their 20’s and wish upon wish that they would have started judo as a 6 year
old. No doubt there is a better “chance” that these older starting
judokas will stay in judo a long time. I have known judoka with so much
talent that they could easily have been vying for National or Olympics
medals. They quit. I have known judoka with half the talent but double
the desire and give double the effort but will never win a medal at even a
local shiai. I have seen talent wasted because
of poor coaching or a lack of vision from their coaches, parents and well
meaning peers. I have seen average talent excel because of a desire to
achieve beyond what people think they cannot achieve.
Regardless of ability,
graduation from high school or college signifies another chapter in your
lives. Everyone has strengths and skills that are unique to each
individual. Make sure you keep your eye on your goals, do not be
distracted by negative people around you. Always strive to be the best
and help others to be their best. Personal achievement is just
that. Do not try to be something you are not but do not avoid something
that you can achieve. Never say never, never give up and always do you
best. Overcoming obstacles, problem solving and perseverance will make
you successful.
Good fortune to all of
our graduates. Go forth and make the world better, serve your community and
your family, remember the tenets of judo you have learned. Make your
parents proud, make your coach proud and most importantly, make
yourself proud. You are our future. We will help you and nurture
you, cajole you and nudge you. We will push you and prod you to be the
best person you can be. In the final analysis however, it is up to you to
make your own pathway of life.
NOTE: In our local
section please read about a very special young woman, one of our own, who has
made her own pathway and serves as a role model for boys and girls to aspire
to. While she would argue this point, it is my belief that Ashlie Martini exemplifies the epitome of a true judoka in
all aspects of her life – personal, academia and in judo.
Some responses to the
Coach Certifications issue as well as my musings.
I enjoyed reading the
article about USA Judo, USJF and USJA relations, thanks, much appreciated.
Lance
Dear J,
Hope all is well.
I hope you would
agree that in the last twenty eight years the growth and development of
American Judo has been less than impressive. Participation, funding and
performance have not seen significant increases since 1978. It is clear
the three organizational structure of the last many
years has not been successful on multiple levels.
The newly adopted
Governance Structure which USA Judo adopted in April of '06 was drafted in
conjunction with the leadership of the USOC and the USOC Legal Department. The
leadership of USA Judo believes this new structure gives USA Judo the potential
for sustained growth and development. Under this new structure, and with
the continued support and guidance of the USOC, the leadership of USA Judo
will manage the organization in a manner commensurate with other
organizations that are held accountable for success by it's members and partner organizations.
Under the new structure,
I am hopeful you have seen deliberate effort, by the leadership of
USA Judo, towards professionalization and accountability of all USA
Judo services. At present we have professionals in the following areas: Olympic
Coaching Staff, Coaching Staff U-23 Program, Coaching Staff USA Judo Training
Sites, Event Coordinators, Coach Certification, Athlete Coach High Performance
Program, Public Relations and an Executive Director and Staff. It is critical
that as we move forward, USA Judo increase the efficiency and number
of services offered each and every year. Clearly, continued success in any
organization is not accidental. We now have a structure and a plan that has the
potential for sustained growth and development.
Additionally , it is critical that USA Judo now give
itself every opportunity for success by taking ownership of it's rights and privileges as the National Governing Body.
It is unfortunate that in doing so members of the
other organizations may feel disenfranchised. It is
important for you to understand that USA Judo, as the National Governing
Body for the sport of Judo is absolutely held accountable for the growth and
development of our sport in this country, to that end USA Judo will do whatever
is necessary to serve that interest, while providing as much mutual cooperation
with the other organizations as possible. The focus of USA Judo is not to
destroy any other Judo organization, it is simply to promote the well being and
success of ours, or we will be destined to another twenty eight years of
mediocrity.
Some good news! Today,
USA Judo is near an all time record in total membership! This is important in
that it clearly illustrates we are on the right path.
I would be happy to
discuss anything you wish as it relates to American Judo, anytime you wish. You
have my number.
J, Thank you so much for
all your hard work and dedication to American Judo. I know in the coming years we will get through
these immediate organizational issues and all of American Judo will be in
a much better place in the not to distant
future.
Best,
Lance Nading

Of interest, Taekwondo’s made its
medal re-debut in Olympic competition in 2000. Just for reference, they
are presently an Olympic sport. Also of interest is that equestrian had a
similar problem with dueling NGB issues.

Ashlie Martini to receive PhD from
Northwestern University.
Ashlie Martini…, Dr. Ashlie
Martini, will be leaving Chicago to pursue an academic career at Purdue
University this fall. Ashlie came to Chicago,
from California, as a student at Northwestern University where she received a
Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1998. Starting Judo at
the ripe old age of 21, it did not take her long to become a black belt and a
nationally ranked player. Ashlie began working
for her PhD at Northwestern University and her dissertation "Molecular
Modeling and Continuum Analyses of Thin Film Interfaces" was successfully
defended this past spring. Ashlie is a teacher, a
lecturer, and an author but also serves her community as Judo Instructor for
women and children at Tohkon Judo, an Athlete
Representative to the Ethics Committee of USA Judo and a volunteer at the
Japanese American Service Committee (JASC). Ashlie
is happily married to Larry Wiley.
Here is a young woman who
has done it all, has kept her head on straight throughout here
career, a genuine “gentle woman.” The best to you as you move on to
that next phase of your life.

NORTH SOUTH TOURNAMENT:
Hello Everyone,
This is a friendly reminder that our
annual North South Tournament is approaching next Saturday, May 19,
2007. Many people from the Midwest have contacted me about this event and
we are expecting a big turn out. Our
main attraction is the exciting annual team competition challenging the judoka
from the Chicago area (The North) verses the judoka from southern Illinois (The
South). Last year the North won.
Another very special part of the North
South Tournament will be the presentation of the annual Sensei Henry Okamura
Award to the tournament competitor who displays the best spirit and
technique. Sensei Okamura devoted much of his life to sharing judo with
young people. He provided wonderful mentoring and financial support to children
so that they could travel and compete in Judo.
On the Sunday after the tournament
(May 20) there will be a special workout for senior & junior Judo
players from 9:00-11:00am at the World Martial Arts School in O'Fallon, Il. A $5.00 admission collected at the door, will be given to the Illinois Judo Development.
There will also be a meeting of
Illinois Judo Inc. on the morning of the tournament. Please contact Mr. Brett Wolf at 773-230-6070 or azumah4@yahoo.com for more
information regarding this meeting.
See You At The Tournament!
Sincerely,
Eiko Saito Shepherd 7th Dan

available for three U.S. athletes. Housing will be awarded to the highest
ranked three athletes, as of the USA Judo Senior Elite National Roster dated

electronically as jpeg files.
A maximum of two U.S. competitors
per weight division will be allowed. If more than two U.S. athletes

is no USA Judo-designated team coach or manager for this event. All
arrangements for travel to the event as well as any issues that may arise
during the tournament are the responsibility of the athlete and/or his/her
personal coach.

USA Judo Offers $40,000
in Scholarship Funds for 2007
USA Judo is pleased to announce that
$40,000 in college scholarship funds has been made available to USA Judo
members through the Life Membership Fund.
“We are all very excited to offer
our student athletes the opportunity to have financial assistance with the
ever-increasing costs of attending college,” said Eddie Liddie
(Colorado Springs, Colo.), USA Judo Director of Athlete Performance.
“Many of our top athletes are juggling both working
toward a college degree and training as well as working to pay for the expenses
of both. These scholarships, as well as this year’s significant increase
in training and competition funds, will hopefully allow athletes to focus more
on training and receiving an education.”
Scholarship awards will be selected
by a committee and will be based on both academic and athletic
performance. Prior to review, all applications must first be submitted to
Liddie.
Scholarship applications are
available at http://www.usjudo.org/documents/LifeMembershipScholarship_App.pdf.
The next deadline for application is June 15.
The new scholarship funds are the
latest in a series of moves to provide more opportunities, both on and off the
mat, by the USA Judo Board of Directors.
“This significant increase of
scholarship funds would not have been possible without the assistance of our
recently appointed Independent Directors Steve Poindexter (Fresno, Calif.)
and Ken Bellmard (Oklahoma City, Okla.),” said
USA Judo Board Member Lance Nading (Denver, Colo.)
