EDITORIAL –
GRADUATES: GO FORTH AND DO GOOD
I think everyone wishes
for happiness throughout their lives. From the time we are born to the
time we die, each of us, in our own way seeks pleasurable goals:
As a BABY, we seek the
love and comfort of a mother, the nurturing habitat of a family, the comfort of
a home.
As a TODDLER, we seek
ourselves and as we realize that we are not the only beings in our universe, we
find that we have to share, we have to play with others, we
have to learn to listen to our parents and elders.
It is the PRESCHOOL YEARS
where we gain our moral compass – right from wrong, good from evil and while
this is an ever developing trait, I believe most of this is learned here and
will carry us through the difficult teenage years
right to adulthood.
The most compliant age I
believe is the ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AGE, where a child wants to please their
parents, study hard, do house chores, perhaps get a paper route, play the piano. This is the calm before the storm.
But as TEENAGERS,
defiance, stubbornness, lack of communication often characterizes this
age. A teenagers libido runs rampant and
drinking, drugs, driving and sex best characterize this most difficult
time. Occasionally, one finds does find teens who can talk to adults, who
do engage in behavior that is appropriate, who will help that little old ladies
across the street. For most parents, it is a time to get through, to
survive, to hope for the best. Most importantly,
parents have to be parents, not friends. Parents must not please their
teens, for it they do, their teens will be pleased.
COLLEGE is independence
and with it comes adult responsibility. Most adapt well and realize this
is the beginning of the rest of their lives. We learn that we are our own
best friends and potentially our own worst enemies. We learn that
developing lasting friendships are an important part of growing up. We
learn that teamwork and cooperation gets us further ahead in life than
isolation and discord. We learn hopefully that doing your best, striving
for excellence, reaching the top are noble goals. We learn that in a
society where meritocracy is rewarded, success will come.
As an ADULT, we find that
our parents were not as stupid as we thought – enough said.
And when they become PARENTS,
it is then that we can become friends with our children and spoil our
grandchildren rotten. Truly a noble payback.
DISAPPOINTMENT is a way
of life, however and it is the person who handles this disappointment with
grace and humility that will ultimately be the true winner. Likewise,
handling success with this same grace and humility is a better indication of
character than the achievement itself. One must remember that not
everyone can become President of the United States or even of their company or
win that two hundred million dollar contract, or become a general or admiral or
win a gold medal at the Olympics or even be in the Olympics. Not everyone
can achieve success through hard work. Sometimes luck, being in the right
place at the right time, knowing the right people, knowing a second language
can tip the balance in your favor. Disappointment is a setback but it can
also be a learning experience and for those who learn from their
disappointment, who grow and become better, who strive and fail but comes back
to help others ARE the true winners in this race called LIFE.
So no matter where you
are in life, remember that there are always those less fortunate and that the
riches we do have are not money or fame, a big house or job. It is our
character, our honesty and integrity, it is the way we treat our fellow human
beings and for that matter, all things living that really matter. In this
there can be no compromise – live life to the fullest, take care of your
health, your family, your job – generally in that order. Do what is
right, be a constant learner, help those that are less fortunate. YOU
will find happiness.

Reser Wins Bronze at Tre-Torri
(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Ryan Reser (Colorado Springs, Colo. / USA Judo National Training
Site at the Olympic Training Center / 73kg) won his second European medal
this year on Saturday when he took a bronze at the Tre-Torri
International, a USA Judo Senior B-Level Point Tournament, in Porto Sant’Elpidio, Italy.
Just eight days after winning his
second Pan American Championship, Reser defeated his
first two opponents in a combined time of less than a minute… more
Williams-Murray Wins Tre-Torri,
Regains #1 Ranking
(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Taraje Williams-Murray (Bronx, N.Y. / NYAC / Spartak Sports Club) hadn’t fought in the 60kg division
in more than a year until March, but he had little trouble winning his first
European Tournament on Friday at the Tre-Torri
International, a USA Judo Senior B-Level Point Tournament, in Porto Sant’Elpidio, Italy.
This is the third consecutive
tournament win for the Athens Olympian. The dominant American at 60kg
since 2004, Williams-Murray moved up to 66kg in February 2006 and although he
had success at the heavier weight he opted to move back down again this year,
winning the New York Open in March and the USA Judo Senior Nationals in April… more>
