EDITORIAL –
CHARACTEROLOGICAL CONCEPTS
I thought I made up a word
this past weekend – CHARACTERLOGICAL. But alas, it has already been used
extensively. According to the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, it is an
adjective. It’s etymology is characterology
or the study of character including its development and the differences in
individuals. Its obvious uses might be in psychology,
behavior disorders, human development. In fact,
Google found 120,000 references to this word. I did not research all of
them. And I might add, I do not claim to be a psychologist or someone who
casually thinks they can misrepresent themselves to you. I plead innocent
on both counts.
If we break this word
down into CHARACTER AND LOGICAL, what lessons can be learned from this.
More importantly, what lessons can I learn from this? In this context, I
think we can refer to “logical” as reasoning in a clear and consistent
manner. And “character” as the cumulative assumption of a person or
group’s qualities that make them what they are; their moral or ethical make-up,
their personal attributes, traits or core being.
One of my students
recently told me that he does not consider me his coach. Taken aback, I
asked “why not?”
“Because you are my
SENSEI. You are my coach
AND sensei.” he proclaimed. He continued
to tell me that a coach teaches you how to win, but a sensei teaches you how to
live.
I thought that was pretty
prophetic from a 16 year old boy. And while I knew this intellectually
and spiritually, I began to look at coaches and sensei’s
in an entirely new light. What makes one person a good coach or a great
coach and someone else a good sensei or a great sensei?
I began to ponder and I have come up with some observations about the
differences.
Not all coaches are sensei's
just as many sensei's are not great coaches, but neither are they mutually
exclusive. It is truly a challenge to be good at both, but it is certainly an
endeavor worth pursuing. I believe that all coaches can be sensei's and that all sensei's can be better coaches - but
it takes work.
Vince Lombardi, head
coach of the Green Bay Packers football team was attributed as saying “Winning
is not everything, it is the only thing.” This all too quoted cliché has
probably caused more heartbreak and disappointment than any nine words in the
history of the English language – certainly since the 60’s. But a closer
look at the real Vince Lombardi shows quite a different man. He was a
consummate winner (coach) but he had the respect of both fans and players (sensei)
alike. He was tough on the field (coach) but taught that life was worth
fighting for (sensei). He was a man of hard words (coach) but could also
admonish some of life’s great lessons (sensei).
http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/v/vince_lombardi.html
I look at a coach who
recognizes that one of their players on the National team roster is not really
training or working to their potential and withdraws
that player in favor of another person who will work hard and will join the
international team. This is a coach and sensei.
I look at a senior
referee who has made a mistake on the mat (actually all three of them and only
one incident), but is willing to consider that a mistake has been made and make
the change so the right player gets the right score. I look at the coach
of the player losing the score acknowledging that he does not want his player
to win by a mistake. This is a coach and a sensei at work.
I look at tournament
directors who wants only to do the best for the competitors, the referees, the
local staff by making sure that all of their bases are covered for hospitality
(referee dinner), respect for time management (on time starts for the players),
transportation considerations (at 4:30am) and staffing (fair honorariums for
the timers and scorers). These are sensei attributes at work.
I look at medical personnel who looks at an injured player and does
what is best for the player’s health, regardless of the consequences to the
game or what the coaches want. This is a sensei attitude at work.
These are core principles
in action. They are reactive and sincere. They are spontaneous and
essential. It must be genuine because to do otherwise would be so
transparent that contrary actions would be met with scorn and certain
disapproval. These principles are consistent with good moral values and
courage, honor and attitudes, behavior and duty. Some say that you acquire
your values before the age of 5. That being said, while one can learn
even as an adult, as one ages, it becomes harder to
teach, only to modify. These are at the heart and soul of a person’s
existence; they are uncompromising and incontrovertible character traits.
I believe these ARE the characterological concepts of
SENSEI’S and COACH’S and are the cornerstones of our society. Without
them, what do we teach our students, our children and ourselves?
Vince Lombardi was
right. “Winning is not everything, but the will to win is.” Let us
all have the will to win and in so doing, do what is right for all.

metropolis of Tokyo and the Samurai capital of Kyoto. They’ll train with an
elite police force and journey to the mountaintop hideaway of legendary master,

Former World Medalist Brian Olson Makes a Comeback
(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – With
just over a year to go until the 2008 Olympic Games, four-time National
Champion Brian Olson (Longmont, Colo.) recently announced his plans to
come out of retirement in a quest to win his first Olympic medal in Beijing.
“I think one of the biggest reasons
I decided I wanted to come back was obviously to try and win an Olympic medal
after being so close so many times,” said Olson, a 1997 World medalist.
“I had a successful career, but that’s the one thing that’s eluded me.”
Olson, who was on the 1996, 2000 and
2004 U.S. Olympic Teams, will be trying to qualify for his fourth U.S. Olympic
Team after dominating the division for the better part of a decade… more>
Something to Think About –
I would like to acknowledge the fine job Jim
Branson and Lowell Slaven did as Tournament Directors
of the 2007 USJA Junior Nationals. Not too long ago, the JA Juniors got a
bad rap for an ill-conceived tournament effort. However, because of the
tremendous efforts of Jim and Lowell, this event hosted over 520 players from
Massachusetts to Hawaii. They had Kata and
Competition divisions. They had a joint camp after the event with two
days in Indiana and a continuation camp in Michigan and the highlighter guest
of the event was world champion, Jim Pedro Jr. The tournament
Headquarters and site were first class and these two gentlemen and their GREAT
staff did a superb job in making everyone feel welcome. Of course,
Indianapolis is one of the truly friendly cities in the country so it was not a
stretch to imagine a great event. Next year, the event will be in Boston
and run by the Pedro’s – Jim Sr and Jim Jr. It
should be a great event and there will be a great expectation about having the
first national event in Massachusetts in a long time.
You should go to the Vince Lombardi quote site.
You will enjoy some of life’s small pleasures. http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/v/vince_lombardi.html
