EDITORIAL –
It is with regret that I
have to announce the unexpected death of Jamie Ayukawa,
son of Linda and Kaz Ayukawa.
His obituary will be posted in local area papers this week. I know that
all of us from Illinois Judo, the former BTC Judo Dojo and Yorkville Judo Club
wish Kaz and Linda condolences at this most difficult
time. Jamie started Judo at BTC Judo Dojo under Sensei Dick Fukuyama as a
child. When the family moved to St Charles, they started working out at
Sensei Bob Corwin’s Yorkville Judo Club. Kaz
continues to practice at Yorkville and contribute to this community.
ST. CHARLES — Jamie Ayukawa, 37, of Chicago and formerly of St. Charles,
Illinois, died suddenly August 18, 2007.
Jamie was born March 10, 1970 in
Chicago, was a graduate of St. Charles High School and attended the Illinois
Institute of Technology. He was a gifted musician, artist and writer and
a much loved, long-time employee of Double Door, Chicago. He also played
keyboard with the band, MCDH.
Jamie was preceded in death by his
mother, Barbara (Gimbel) Ayukawa;
grandparents, Kuniyoshi and Kikuye
Ayukawa, William and Shirley Gimbel,
and Roderick Ferguson; aunts, Nancy Miyashita and Ruby Cottreau;
great-aunt, Helen Gimbel.
Jamie is mourned by his loving
parents, Kaz and Linda Ayukawa;
his brother and best friend, Christopher Ayukawa (AnnMarie Braun); fiancée, Chris Lysen;
grandmother, Anne Ferguson; aunts and uncles, Bernard Gimbel,
Jeanne and Nick Horwith, Scott and Crystal Ferguson,
Anne and David Sohovich, Ellen Page, Sunao and Kay Ayukawa, Sam and
Dorothy Ayukawa; cousins, Laura, Tim, Katie, Jimmy,
Adam, Linda, Cindy, Karen, Elaine, Bruce and Grace. He will be missed dearly by
many friends, especially A.J. Dusek, Danielle Harms,
Lincoln Anderson, Tim Ptak, Chad Anderson, Bill Teasedale and Sandy Morris.
Private funeral services were held
at Yurs Funeral Home, St. Charles. Jamie’s
family requests that friends gather on Sunday, August 26, 2007 at Niche
Restaurant, 14 South 3rd Street, Geneva (630)262-1000 from 2:00 p.m.
till 6:00 p.m. for a celebration of Jamie’s life.
In lieu of flowers, memorials would
be appreciated to the Merit School of Music-Jamie Ayukawa
Memorial, 38 So. Peoria Street, Chicago, IL , 60607 (www.meritmusic.org), phone (312) 786-9428, ext. 603.
EDITORS NOTE: Thank
you to all of my proof readers who caught the mistake in the measurement scales
in the last editorial on MAT SIZE. Of course, this error became apparent
only after proof reading it after it was
sent. There are three references to meters. The 1st and
3rd references should be feet. It makes a lot more
sense. Sorry about that. Someone else also thought I was a little
tipsy when writing it but all came together at the end – maybe.

Win a Trip to Miami for
the 2008 Pan American Championships... For you, a Friend and your Sensei!
As a registered member of USA Judo,
you may be the winner of a trip for as many four people to the 2008 Pan
American Championships, May 8-11 in Miami, Fla.
This event will be the final opportunity
for countries in the Pan American region to qualify their athletes for the 2008
Olympic Games in Beijing and your chance to see Team USA compete against some
of the best athletes in the world!
Here is how the program works:
If you are a registered member of
USA Judo by December 1, 2007 you will be entered into a drawing to win a trip
for yourself and a guest to fly on United Airlines (you must fly from a
city service by United Airlines) to attend the Pan Am
Championships.
"This is one of the many
innovations that we are implementing in order to provide our members with more
than their money's worth for their membership fee,” said USA Judo CEO Jose
H. Rodriguez. “This is our way of saying thanks for their support of
the organization and the growth of judo. I sincerely hope that when the winner
is announced that he or she had registered with a USA Judo club so that their
coach enjoys the benefit of winning as well."
The trip will be for two persons and,
if you are a registered member of a USA Judo member club, your club sensei and
his or her guest will be invited to join you at the event!
The package includes:
The announcement of the winner of
this trip will be made on December 14, 2007.
"We are consistently looking
for new ways to encourage and reward our members. There are several
other membership benefit programs that will soon be announced to continue
to enhance the reasons to become a USA Judo member,” said USA Judo President Dr.
Ron Tripp. “We also would like to thank United Airlines, Hyatt Hotels
and the Miami Sports Commission as well as the U.S. Olympic Committee for
helping us make these membership benefits
possible."

Something to Think About – What does love mean?
A group of professional people posed this
question to a group of 4-8 year-olds, "What does love mean?"
The answers they got were broader and deeper than anyone could have imagined.
See what you think:
"When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn't bend over and paint her
toenails anymore.
So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hands got
arthritis too. That's love."
Rebecca- age 8
"When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different.
You just know that your name is safe in their mouth."
Billy - age 4
"Love is when a girl puts on perfume and a boy puts on shaving cologne and
they go out and smell each other."
Karl - age 5
"Love is when you go out to eat and give somebody most of your French fries
without making them give you any of theirs."
Chrissy - age 6
"Love is what makes you smile when you're tired."
Terri - age 4
"Love is when my mommy makes coffee for my daddy and she takes a sip before
giving it to him, to make sure the taste is OK."
Danny - age 7
"Love is when you
kiss all the time. Then when you get tired of kissing, you still want to be
together and you talk more. My Mommy and Daddy are like that. They look
gross when they kiss"
Emily - age 8
"Love is what's in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents
and listen."
Bobby - age 7 (Wow!)
"If you want to learn to love better, you should start with a
friend who you hate,"
Nikka - age 6 (we need a few million more Nikka's on this planet)
"Love is when you tell a guy you like his shirt, and then he wears it everyday."
Noelle - age 7
"Love is like a little old woman and a little old man who are still
friends even after they know each other so well."
Tommy - age 6
"During my piano recital, I was on a stage and I was scared. I looked at all
the people watching me and saw my daddy waving and smiling. He was the
only one doing that. I wasn't scared anymore."
Cindy - age 8
"My mommy loves me more than anybody. You don't see anyone else
kissing me to sleep at night."
Clare - age 6
"Love is when Mommy gives Daddy the best piece of chicken."
Elaine-age 5
"Love is when Mommy sees Daddy smelly and sweaty and still says he is
handsomer than Brad Pitt."
Chris - age 7
"Love is when your puppy licks your face even after you left him alone all
day."
Mary Ann - age 4
"I know my older sister loves me because she gives me all her old clothes
and has to go out and buy new ones."
Lauren - age 4
"When you love somebody, your eyelashes go up and down and little stars
come out of you." (what an image)
Karen - age 7
"You really shouldn't say 'I love you' unless you mean it. But if you mean
it, you should say it a lot. People forget."
Jessica - age 8
And the final one -- Author and lecturer Leo Buscaglia
once talked about a contest he was asked to judge. The purpose of the
contest was to find the most caring child. The winner was a four year old
child whose next door neighbor was an elderly gentleman who had recently lost
his wife. Upon seeing the man cry, the little boy went into the old
gentleman's yard, climbed onto his lap, and just sat there. When his
Mother asked what he had said to the neighbor, the little boy said,
"Nothing, I just helped him cry"
Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly. Leave the rest to God!
