EDITORIAL – CIRCLE OF
LIFE
I recently got an email from
someone moving to Southern Illinois from Florida. Great, we could always
use more folks in Judo in Illinois. So I wrote them and said you might
try Eiko Shepherd at Kito-Kan
in St Louis, or George Stanich at All Stars in
Granite City or Quentin Thompson in Belleville. Lo and behold, they are
nearer to Olney IL than St Louis. Olney?, that is near Effingham or
Charleston, you know way down in the middle of the state. Unfortunately,
I also spoke with some folks about the availability of Judo Clubs in this
area. They told me the clubs available were more of the MMA or UFC or
Jujitsu type clubs or dojos rather than JUDO.
At the same time, I have heard of a family wanting to move from one
club to another. They could not because the instructor told them that
they would have to have permission from their former sensei before they could
be accepted into the new dojo. This thinking is archaic and reverts back
to the old school where you were a member of one club for life. In
today’s society, this just is not practical nor is it for the greater good.
So what is the
point? We need to grow Judo better and smarter. We need to make
Judo more accessible. We need better marketing. We need more
instructors willing to start new clubs. We need more institutional types
of clubs, for example at the Junior High or High School level, at the college
level. And we need to have more neighborhood clubs started in all areas
of the state. It is not too much of a stretch to get monetary grants for under served or under privileged areas in small and large
cities. Boys and Girls clubs, after school activities, park districts are
good starters for industrious individuals to start Judo Clubs.
As instructors, our
mission is to teach our students, among other things, to become black belts and
themselves go forth and start other clubs. An
organization can not grow unless there is a constant
influx of new members, in particular, young members, who will learn the ways of
Judo. It is not sufficient to just go to a dojo and work out for
yourself. While it may be a stretch to think that we could have judo
7-Elevens, it is not a stretch to think we can have a club in every city or at
least every geographic area. In a population of 8 million in the greater
Chicago area, to have less than 10 – 15 clubs is disheartening, indeed, and
probably only about 5 that you can name. Our work in
missionary work. Our charge is to create instructors and to allow
them to go forth and replicate. That is the Circle of Life.
As we celebrate the
opening of the Barrington Judo Club and wish Mike the best of luck, it is
equally important to celebrate the opening of more clubs all over the
state. So go forth and replicate. Go forth and start a club.
Go forth and spread the good word that Judo is a great activity, a wonderful
discipline for children and adults, men and women, coordinated and
“uncoordinated”, the healthy and the disabled, the faster learners as well as
the slow learners. Go forth and TEACH JUDO – give back what you have received
and you will receive many fold rewards from what you have given.
LOCAL NEWS
2007 All Women's Championship Flyer
and California Challenge
To all female judoka and friends,
There is always a concern at tournaments here in the Midwest
whether or not there will be enough female judoka participating. Here is
an opportunity for all women to pull together and support an event that will
help ensure you have good competition. It appears that California is bringing a
team of girls and women to compete in Michigan at the all Womens
Championships in Kalamazoo MI. Pass this on to all your students and
fellow judoka. Let’s show the West Coast what great judo talent we have here in
the Midwest! And let’s win the team meet. Let’s beat California.

Grand Opening Success –
Barrington Judo
October 6, 2007: Barrington
Judo had its opening day demo, workout, and schmooz.
We had a really good turn-out, with a few first-timers getting on the mat for
the light workout, and several more coming to watch & see what we're
about. Special guests included Irwin Cohen (7th dan,
and the top coach in the US), and Tim Schultheis
(president of IL Judo), along with Robbie & AJ from Tim's club doing the
demo work. There are photos of the event on our website. Check it
out at: www.barringtonjudo.com <http://www.barringtonjudo.com/>
We are now on our regular practice
schedule. Practices are Thursday nights and Saturday afternoons, details
below and on the website.
Feel free to forward this e-mail to
anyone you think might have an interest.
Cheers,
Mike
Here are a few details that you
might find interesting. Did you know?
*
Practice in Judo builds self-esteem and self-confidence, as well as
coordination, balance, strength, stamina, and general fitness. Judo techniques
are a formidable (hopefully never to be used) form of self defense.
*
Judo is for girls & women, too. It is a perfect Title-IX compliant
sport, where competitors of similar skill level can practice together,
regardless of gender, and with equal opportunity for achievement to the highest
level (Olympic & World medals).
*
Judo is the safest contact sport for children under 13 (study by the American
College of Sports Medicine).
*
Judo is an Olympic sport (first introduced in the Tokyo Games 1964).
*
The word "Judo" in Japanese means, "the
gentle way". As a martial art, it was derived in the 1880s from Ju Jitsu by removing the violent
striking (punching, kicking) techniques.
*
Judo is the most widely practiced martial art worldwide.
*
More people worldwide practice Judo than any other sport, except for soccer.
*
More countries compete in Judo than in an other sport in the Olympic
Games, except for Track & Field.

USJudo.org Reaches More than Four Million Hits in
September!
Just two years after the recreation
of www.usjudo.org,
USA Judo is pleased to announce that the Web Site has broken a new record –
achieving more than 4.2 million hits during the month of September alone.
One of the most popular Web Sites in
the international judo community, www.usjudo.org reached its highest point during the World
Championships, Sept. 13-16, when more than 25,000 unique visitors came to the
page to follow Team USA’s quest for gold.
This is in addition to the thousands
of hits to www.livesportsvideo.com

3rd Annual Jita Kyoei Judo Championships

members of the "USA Judo National Youth Judo Team" at the 3rd Annual Jita Kyoei Judo Championship in Lima, Peru.
This is an international event and it does not limit entries. This enables USA
Judo to present this event as a pointable competition
opportunity at the "Junior Tournament Not Listed" rate of 5 points

the age criteria to compete in these age divisions:

Something to Think About
–
“Holy Cow” “Cubs Win!!! Cubs Win!!! Cubs Win!!!” – Harry Carey, the voice of the Chicago Cubs
1982 – 1997
With the Cubs going to
the play offs in Phoenix to play the Diamondbacks, we in Chicago will now hope
for a division title and maybe, after 99 years, a World Series
Championship. The Sox did it, Boston did it, now
maybe it is the Cubbies turn as the longest standing team in major league
history, perhaps any professional team to go without a Championship.
There have been great sporting events in sports in Chicago. There have
even been some great Judo events in Chicago. But perhaps one event that
is the greatest was in 1976(before Harry’s time),
when Rick Monday, right fielder for the Chicago Cubs saved the flag. Many
in Chicago remember this, but for those of you who do not, here is a short video
of the event. Rick Monday, a professional player of 19 years, said that
if this is the only thing I am remembered by, that’s not so bad. I could
not agree more.
“Wait til next year” - admonition from MOST CUB FANS in Chicago.
With the Cubs going home
after getting swept by the Diamondback, it IS a wait till next year year. But I think you will all agree that the Cubs’
Rick Monday is a winner in any case.
Infant Swimming Resource - Very important for mothers, fathers, grandparents, sisters,
brothers, cousins, - anyone who knows anyone with a small infant.
