EDITORIAL –
Last Tuesday, January 15th,
Chicago submitted its bid to the IOC (International Olympics Committee) for
consideration as a bid city for the 2016 Olympic Games and Paralympic
Games and from what I have heard and seen, it is quite a bid. Most of the
venues will center around downtown Chicago, specifically, McCormick Place, the
water front, Lincoln Park, Washington Park, United Center, Hyde Park, North
Avenue and of course Millennium Park. The other cities bidding are Rio de
Janiero, Brazil, Tokyo, Japan, Madrid, Spain, Prague,
Czech Republic and Doha, Qatar. All are quality, vibrant cities, but I
think Chicago has a great chance in winning this bid for the premier sporting
event in the world. As I understand the time table, there will be a first
cut of the bid cities in January, 2009 with a final decision coming on October
2, 2009 in Copenhagen Denmark. The competition will be tough but the
Chicago 2016 Committee has some top notch folks who are heading up this effort
including Patrick Ryan who is the Chairman and CEO of Chicago 2016.
I had the privilege of
being at the 1996 Games in Atlanta as part of the Technical Staff (invited
staff) for the Judo venue. It was a great time, made many friends, saw
the world come to the United States. What a thrill. And now we have
a chance to do this again. Words cannot explain this feeling, it
just is. If any of you have any thoughts of volunteering for this event,
I would highly suggest it. The Olympics are run by professionals but many
volunteers are needed to direct guests at the venues, be gofers, runners, crowd
control, and a myriad other jobs associated with such an undertaking.
They are there on their own dime, they travel from all over the country at
their own expense and do not get anything in return (maybe a volunteer t-shirt
and pin) except the satisfaction of being a part of the world’s greatest
sporting event every 4 years. It is a two week party and something that
should not be missed.

2008 Cuba International
Competition & Training Opportunity 23rd Jose Ramon Rodriguez Men’s
Championship 17th Judoguis
Dorados Women’s Championship We have an invitation to travel to
Cuba for a Senior Women’s and Men’s competition and to participate in a
training camp. The travel dates for the competition would be April 20 – 25,
2007. Including the training camp would increase the time of the trip so that
it would be April 20 – May 1, 2008. These events are Senior “B” level
competitions. Contested divisions will include all Olympic weight
divisions. It is necessary to begin to plan
NOW for a trip to Cuba in April. We expect airfares from Miami to
Havana to be around $500.00. Projected accommodation cost should be around
$65.00 per person per day based on double occupancy. This trip is open to Elite Senior
Athletes, and to IJF Juniors who are Level C or higher on the Senior
roster. NOTE: there is likely to be some funding available to as many
as TEN IJF Jr athletes who participate in the
Competition AND the Training Camp. ALL athletes – Junior or Senior -
who wish to make the Cuba trip must contact Jim Hrbek (judolym@aol.com) by close of business on January 25, 2008. |

Something to Think About – ICE
The water froze the instant the wave broke through
the ice. That's what it is like in Antarctica. Water freezes the instant it comes in contact with the
air. The temperature of the water is already some degrees below
freezing. Just look at how the wave froze in midair? See the
attachment.
