EDITORIAL – Wisconsin HALL of FAME inducts 4
individuals
HALL OF FAME implies exemplary service and
accomplishments in the field to which an individual is so honored. It
could be for any accomplishment, in any field, but it is generally associated
with a sporting area. Judo has a couple of Halls of Fame, but to the best
of my knowledge, Wisconsin could be the first in the United States to have a
state H of F devoted exclusively to Judo. Last year’s distinguished list
included Neal Rosenburg (WI) and Ron Hansen
(NC). This year, four more were added.
On Saturday, January 26th, 4
individuals were inducted into the Wisconsin Hall of Fame: Sandi
Cornelius, Dick Graham, Brett Wood-Taylor and Dick Soliva.
Each of their stories are in the attachment
above. Impressive by any standard of their service and dedication to
Judo, it is also necessary to expand on Brett Wood-Taylor’s accomplishments as
they cross state lines into regional and National Judo endeavors, leaving a
huge impact on those who have come in direct contact with this man. So
with this in mind and not to diminish the others in the least, I would like to
mention the following:
BRETT WOOD-TAYLOR
The USA Judo Referee Committee awarded a special
recognition award to Brett at the Santa’s Shiai on December
1, 2007. However, the actual awarding of the plaque was presented by Kei Narimatsu, a member of the Referee Commission at the Hall
of Fame dinner.
USAJUDO REFEREE COMMISSION
RECOGNITION AWARD
Presented
to
BRETT
WOOD-TAYLOR
The USAJudo Referee Commission is pleased to recognize a
referee who exemplifies the principle of Jita Kyoei,
mutual benefit and welfare, the essence of Judo. We applaud your referee
skills, your leadership and the time you contribute to the growth of Judo.
By
USAJudo Referee Commission
Mel Appelbaum, Ph.D.
December 1, 2007
Mr Jim Colgan, National Promotion Board
Chairman, presented Brett with his SHICHIDAN, 7th DEGREE BLACK BELT
in recognition of his long standing competitive, coaching, teaching, refereeing
and administrative skills and activities as well as dedication to the sport of
Judo. Rank is based not just on winning competition. Rank is also
based on understanding and practicing the true principles of JUDO, winning the
hearts and minds of judokas as students and colleagues, loving Judo with
passion and not expecting anything in return. In this regard, Brett has
exceeded expectations on all counts.
I would also like to acknowledge the kind letter
that Mr Jose Rodriquez, CEO of USA Judo, sent
congratulating Brett on his induction into the Wisconsin Hall of Fame and the
generous donation of $250.00 from the USA Judo Board of Directors to Wisconsin
Judo in honor of this induction.
Dr Ron Tripp, President of USA Judo sent a
greeting which was read at the banquet as well as at the Wahadachi
Tournament on Sunday. In it, Dr Tripp expressed his appreciation for
Brett’s dedication to local as well as Regional and National efforts to promote
Judo in the true spirit of Jigoro Kano. Brett’s
efforts on behalf of merchandizing of US Judo products all over the country and
most notably, the effort Brett made to come to a national meeting (Houston) to
vote for much needed reform within the National Governing Body did not go
unrecognized. What is remarkable was that this was at a time when he was
facing great physical challenges in his life. He DID have an important
impact on this re-organization and his actions should serve as inspiration to
all of us. USA Judo Board of Directors by resolution, proclaimed January
26, 2008 as “Brett Wood-Taylor Day in honor and gratitude for all you have
given us.”
I received a call on Saturday evening from Mr Fletcher Thornton, a member of the Board of Directors of
USA Judo, that the Youth and Scholastic National Championships, to be held in Chippewa
Valley, WI at the University of Wisconsin at Stout be dedicated to Brett
Wood-Taylor. This fitting honor comes with the knowledge that Brett
worked tirelessly especially at Junior events throughout the United States in
particular, the High School and Collegiate Nationals, the Junior Olympics and
the other National Junior championships held each year. He has probably
hosted more tournaments on an annual basis, sometimes as many as 3 a year and
those are just the ones he asks folks to come to from out of state.
Welcome Mat has hosted many mini-shiai’s,
or invitational’s as well as clinics with national and internationally
acclaimed judokas.
If a lesson can be learned from all of this, it
is that Brett Wood-Taylor truly is unique among our judo community. He
has affected hundreds, nay thousands with his up beat
attitude, his love of judo and most importantly, his love of people. He
does exemplify the true spirit of Judo as it was intended: Mutual Welfare
and Benefit for All. This simple yet profoundly philosophical axiom is at
the core of a true judoka. Brett Wood-Taylor is a true judoka.
I am very honored and pleased that he is my
friend, a colleague, and a fellow JUDOKA.

largely performance based. Among the programs in the 2008 budget are 15 high

Something to Think About
If you can

Old Age – A gift
I am now, probably for the first time in my life, the person I have always wanted to be. Oh, not my
body! I sometime despair over my body, the wrinkles,
the baggy eyes. And often
I am taken aback by that old person that lives in my mirror, but I don't
agonize over those things for long.
I would never trade my amazing friends, my wonderful life, my
loving family for less gray hair or a flatter belly. As I've aged,
I've become kinder to myself, and less critical of myself. I've become
my own friend.
I don't chide myself for eating that extra cookie, or for not making my
bed. I am entitled to a treat, to be messy or to be extravagant.
I have seen too many dear friends leave this world too soon; before they
understood the great freedom that comes with aging.
Whose business is it if I choose to read or play on the computer until 4 AM
and sleep until noon?
I know I am sometimes forgetful. But there again, some of life is just as
well forgotten. And I eventually remember the important things.
Sure, over the years my heart has been broken. How can your heart not
break when you lose a loved one, or when a child suffers, or even when
somebody's beloved pet gets hit by a car? But broken hearts are what give
us strength and understanding and compassion. A heart never broken is
pristine and sterile and will never know the joy of being imperfect.
I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair (if I had any)
turning gray, and to have my youthful laughs be forever etched into deep
grooves on my face. So many have never laughed, and so many have died
before their hair could turn silver.
As you get older, it is easier to be positive. You care less about what other
people think. I don't question myself anymore. I've even earned the right
to be wrong.
So, to answer your question, I like being old. It has set me free.
I like the person I have become. I am not going to live forever , but
while I am still here, I will not waste time lamenting what could have been, or
worrying about what will be. And I shall eat dessert every single day. (If I feel like it).
MAY OUR FRIENDSHIP NEVER FADE. MAY YOU ALWAYS
HAVE A SMILE ON YOUR FACE AND IN YOUR HEART!
