EDITORIAL – WHY DIDN’T I
THINK OF THAT?
In the why didn’t I think of that, here is a happy ending to the Judo career of
our 26th President, Theodore Roosevelt.
He brought Judo to the United States, he practiced
with top ranked Judo teachers from Japan and was promoted to Brown Belt.
Coincidently, I even went to Roosevelt High School in Chicago. We were
known, reverently as the Rough Riders. Though his Judo history was never
a matter of record there, everyone in Judo knew that the President was a
Judoka. So thank you, USJA for the recognition and thank you to Mr Criblez for allowing me to add
this to this newsletter.

The United States Judo
Association (USJA) posthumously presented 26th President Theodore Roosevelt
with an honorary black belt for embracing the sport of Judo at a special
ceremony at Sagamore Hill in Cove Neck on Saturday,
November 17th. TR admired judo’s ability to build character, promote
confidence and teach fair play and sportsmanship.
He also invited Jigoro Kano, founder of Judo to dispatch one of his
high-ranking, top disciples, Yoshiaki Yamashita to come and set up a Dojo in
the White House.The USJA made Roosevelt an 8th Degree
Black Belt, an honor usually bestowed on those who have been doing Judo over 50
years and occasionally on those of distinguished leadership who have bought
Judo into the international limelight. “As a little boy growing up I
remember seeing a picture of the postcard that Roosevelt sent to Yamashita in
our Kodokan book.

I always wondered why
Roosevelt was never made a black belt,” said Gary Goltz,
USJA Chief Operating Officer. “When I became the COO of the USJA, I asked
our board of director’s to honor Roosevelt with an 8th Dan and they unanimously
approved it. In the spirit of President Roosevelt, I really felt this
honor suited such a robust and innovative leader who set the course to make
America a great world power and today, leader of the free world. He
embraced Japan just as it was becoming a modern country and when Judo was
invented. We now have a President who is one rank higher than Russian President
Vladimir Putin who’s a 7th Degree Black Belt!”
Goltz along with James Webb, USJA President,
presented Jim Bruns, President of the Theodore
Roosevelt Association (TRA) a judo gi with a
presidential seal and black belt plus a framed award featuring a red and white
paneled belt (which is given to high ranking black belts) and
certificate.
“On behalf of the TRA, I
want to thank the United States Judo Association for an honor that is so long
overdue.” Said Bruns. “TR
was a man who was bigger than life in everything he did. He died in 1919
and at his funeral they said it was good that death took him in his sleep
because if he was awake it would have been one hell of fight. That’s the
kind of man he was. TR is to the only president to have
a Medal of Honor, a Nobel Peace Price, and now an 8th
Degree Black Belt.”

where the doer of deeds could have done better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually
in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives
valiantly, who errs and comes up short again and again, because there is no
effort without error or shortcoming, but who knows the great enthusiasms, the
great devotions, who spends himself for a worthy cause; who, at the best,
knows, in the end, the triumph of high achievement, and who, at the worst, if
he fails, at least he fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never
be with those cold and timid souls who knew neither victory nor defeat."

Watch World and Olympic
Medalists from Brazil on New York Open Webcast
New York Open to Be Webcast Live for
FREE on March 9
Judo fans around the world will have
the opportunity to watch the New York Open, a B-Level tournament for
international players, live from the New York Athletic Club on March 9.
This year’s competition will include
nearly all of the top men in the U.S. as well as teams from Brazil, Canada and
nearly 20 other nations which are scheduled to participate.
Among the seven-person Brazilian
team are reigning World Champion Luciano
Correa (100kg), 2007 World bronze medalist Joao Schlittler
(+100kg) and 2004 Olympic medalist Leandro Guilheiro
(73kg).
The Webcast is scheduled to begin at
5 p.m. EST. Log on to www.usjudo.org to watch bronze and
gold medal finals!
“During the past two years, we’ve
had a lot of positive feedback from our Webcasts of the New York Open and are
very excited to present this fabulous tournament live for the first time ever,”
said USA Judo CEO Jose H. Rodriguez. “As our athletes are
preparing for Beijing, we expect to see many great matches between U.S. players
and other great countries, including World medalists from Beijing.”

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Athens
Olympian Nikki Kubes (Fort Worth, Texas / Fort
Worth Judo) returned to major international competition in the 78kg
division for the first time since 2006 at the Warsaw World Cup in Poland on
Sunday.
Kubes led in her opening round match against 2007 Pan Am Games
medalist Marylise Levesque (CAN) by a waza-ari (half-point), but lost by ippon

Singapore will host the 1st
Summer Youth Olympic Games in 2010. The result was unveiled by IOC President

final weekend of the first leg of the European Tour, none of the three U.S.
players who competed at the Prague and Warsaw World Cups on Saturday won a

Clinic and National Judges Certification Examination will be conducted by the Kata Operational Committee and appointed national kata judges from 4 – 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 10 at the
Virginia Beach Convention Center.

Youth and Scholastic
Championships to be Important Factor in 2010 Youth Olympic Games
The USA Judo Youth and Scholastic
National Championships will be held March 29-30 at the University of Wisconsin
– Stout in Menomonie, Wis. This year, not only have younger age groups
been added, but it is also an important factor in the future of junior athletes
as it is one of four junior domestic point events and a key factor for athletes
looking to compete at the Junior World and Pan American Infantile Championships
this fall. A great deal will be at stake as 10 junior elite points will
be on the line for athletes competing in Intermediate, Juvenile and IJF-Junior
divisions.
“Presently, registration has surpassed our expectations. I believe we
will have numbers not seen before due to the interest the 2010 Youth Olympic
Games has created” says Jose H. Rodriguez, USA Judo CEO.
More than 500 athletes,
ranging in age from 5-years-old to collegiate athletes are expected to compete
in this new premier event.

In the future, the Youth
and Scholastic National Judo Championships will be included in the selection
process for the Youth Olympic Games. USA Judo leadership is presently
starting the process that will determine who will be chosen for the U.S. team
and may look back at this and other tournaments and incorporate these results
in future selection.
The International Olympic
Committee recently announced that the first ever Summer Youth Olympic Games
will be held in Singapore. It was a close race between Singapore and
Moscow. This will open the doors for many small, young cities to be a
part of the Olympic movement since they may not be able to host the Olympic
Games.
These Games will be a
great addition to the international competition opportunities that already
exist for young athletes. The IOC’s aim with creating these G
ames is to educate young athletes and celebrate the cultures of the
world as well as promote Olympic values.

USA Judo Senior, Masters and Kata National
Championships in Virginia Beach has been filled.

Featuring seniors, masters and kata divisions, this
year’s event will be the final selection tournament for athletes looking to
qualify for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Judo, June 13-14 in Las
Vegas, Nev.
