EDITORIAL – What is Judo?
What folks do not realize
is that Judo is both a philosophy and a science. We all know the
philosophical principles of Judo but do we know the science of Judo. Probably not. Most instructors do not teach it. Most
teachers do not teach it (Judo teachers that is) but the bottom line is that
Judo is PHYSICS. When I was in college, Physics was the drop out course
at my University. I was so intimidated by Physics that I actually took it
at as a summer school course in Chicago because I did not want a failing grade
on my transcripts. I never looked at Judo as Physics but it is. OK,
it is not the quarks and leptons of nuclear physics, it is not the stars and
planets of astrophysics and it is definitely not the special or general
theories of relatively that Einstein proposed.
Judo is in the realm of
classical mechanics, of forces, of momentum, of laws of motion, of mechanical
advantage. It is balance, mass, acceleration, rotation, direction.
It is pulling, pushing, weight, and gravity. The science of physics has
been around since antiquity when man first because interested in physical
forces and how it works. It came to prominence during the Scientific
Revolution dating back to about 1543 with Copernius
and Vesalius publishing their seminal works on Heavenly Spheres and of the
Human Body. But of course, it was Isaac Newton’s classic work on
gravitation and the laws of motion that set the stage for classical
mechanics.
·
Newton’s First Law is the
law if inertia states that a body will remain at rest or continue to move at a
constant velocity unless another force acts upon it.
·
Newton’s Second Law is
the law of acceleration states that a force on a body is equal to its mass
multiplied by its acceleration.
·
Newton’s Third Law is the
law of reciprocal actions and states that for every action, there is an equal
and opposite action.
To analyze this simply,
the third law must be first utilized in a technique by pushing or pulling your
opponent off balance or giving way to your opponent’s push/pull to bring them
off balance. By pushing or pulling your opponent, you will elicit a
reaction that will result in a push or pull of your opponent. This is the
kuzushi phase of a technique.
The second law or the law
of acceleration says that the momentum of a body is proportional to the forces
acting on the body and is in the same direction. Tsukuri
phase or fitting into the throw generally is the momentum built up in
preparation to the actual throw. The force generated in fitting in
(yourself) then is in direct proportion to force you are trying to move (the
opponent) and can be additive if the opponent is not resistive or subtractive
if the opponent is defending you.
The first law or the law
of inertia, is best exemplified by a throws like seoi-nage,
tomoe-nage where once the inertia is build up during
the kuzushi and tsukuri
phase, your opponent is going to go over you until stopped by another force acting on it (the mat). Another aid to
your efforts are the laws of gravity which describes the attraction two masses
have to each other (your opponent’s mass going over you and the earth mass
which is pulling them to the floor).
I hope that this has been
helpful. J
BTW, I got a B.

Midwestern Championship Results
(Colorado Springs,
Colo.) – The Midwestern Championships, the third USA Judo Senior E-Level point
tournament of the year, was held March 1 in Waukegan, Ill. with many of the top
senior elite athletes in attendance.
Kayla Harrison
(Wakefield, Mass. / USA Judo National Team FORCE / NYAC) may be going into the Senior National
Championships, April 11-12 in Virginia Beach, unseeded, but her win in the 78kg
division on Saturday showed that she will be the division’s spoiler as she
knocked off all three of the top ranked women in the division.
In her first match,
Harrison beat #3 Rhonda Morrell-Pruitt (Centerville, Ohio / Shudokan Judo Club) to advance to the next round where
she beat 2007 Senior Nationals silver medalist Nina Cutro-Kelly
(San Antonio, Texas / Universal Judo) by a yuko
(quarter-point) to a koka (smallest points)… more>

Two-time New York Open Champion Taraje Williams-Murray (Wakefield, Mass. / NYAC /
USA Judo National Team FORCE) had the best result for a U.S. player on Sunday,
winning a silver medal in the 60kg division at the New York Open in New York
City. After a first-round bye, Williams-Murray threw Zaur Jalilzade (New
Hope, Minn. / Midway Judo Club) for ippon and
defeated Jeff Fujimoto (Los Angeles, Calif. / Sawtelle

Something to Think About – BALLET of the highest spirit.
It is amazing what the human mind, the human heart and the human spirit can do
if they really put their minds to it. Here is a good example of two
individuals who, while having handicaps, have overcome them and have become a
living testament to strength, resolve and courage. STUNNING is but one
way to describe them. I hope you watch and take heart – ANYTHING IS
POSSIBLE WHEN DETERMINATION AND PURPOSE ARE YOUR CORE VALUES.
