EDITORIAL – LIFE IS SHORT
Recently a man died.* He died on the mat shortly
after competing in a masters competition. He was young (early 50’s) and
probably suffered a massive heart attack. I do not know this man but I
suspect he had a love of judo that would have made him smile as he faced his
own mortality. I know it would for me.
Life is short. In a mere 4 score, you are
born knowing nothing, you grow with youth and
enthusiasm that nothing can bother you. As you head onto the teen years,
you know it all but when you get into your 20’s and 30’s you finally realize
that maybe your parents were not as dumb as you thought. Getting married,
developing a career are milestones that define your perseverance and
dedication. And of course, raising children begins the cycle of life all
over again. All of a sudden, you are old. Where did life
go?
As I look at it
· Life is about lessons learned, being a good person,
always doing the right thing, character building yourself, your children, your
students.
· Life is too short to hold long term grudges – it
is too consuming of the precious time you have on the earth. And, it is
not much fun.
· Life is doing for others what you would want done
for you.
· Life is about sharing generosities and
experiences and stories.
· Life is about caring and giving and sharing what
you have with others with less
· Life is about compromise and working for a common
goal
· Life is taking responsibility for your actions –
admit mistakes but learn from them.
· Life is being a role model for those younger than
you, never disappointing your loved ones
· Life is hard but taking it in stride will keep
you sane – never take yourself too seriously, have fun
· Life is moderation in all that you do
· Life is random acts of kindness
· Life is setting the right priorities with right
attitudes and right mindset
· Life is never having regrets, being thankful
So, LIFE is good because there will always be
others who are more desperate than me. I have a wonderful wife,
children and grandchildren, reasonably healthy and they are healthy, and I can
do as much judo related activities as I want. Do I have regrets? Of
course, probably many, but I must try not to dwell on them. What does
this have to do with Judo, you might ask? Nothing,
absolutely nothing. I was just reminded of my own mortality by this
young gentleman who died last weekend and some emails I receive from friends
who told me that I was a good friend – “a totally good friend”. So even
in death, lessons can be taught and thanksgivings can be had. Thank you
for the blessings we have and learn, from friends and acquaintances, and even
from those we do not know. All of you make us what and who we are.
* Susumu
(Sam) Kurokawa, Nidan, aged
51. Mr. Kurokawa was a professor at Drexel University in Philadelphia
and was coach of the Drexel U Judo Team. He suffered a heart attack
shortly after finishing his competition at the Liberty Bell Classic. Mr Kurokawa was a native of Japan
at the time of his death. Condolences and deepest sympathy are
extended to Mr. Kurokawa’s family and loved ones from
the entire Judo Community.
LOCAL NEWS
From the IJI President:
March was a great month for Illinois
Judo. We started with the Midwestern Championships, held in Waukegan and
presented by the Cohen's Judo Club. The next week, the Gurnee Judo Club
hosted an IJI Open Workout. The turnout was excellent, particularly for
our teenagers. We rotated athletes on-and-off the mat for nearly two
hours of randori, while several of our top-notch
Illinois Judo club coaches worked with all the athletes. Please see
attached photos of the March IJI Open Workout.
Then, our IJI Vice President, Chuck
Clark, and the Yorkville Judo Club hosted the 2nd Annual Illinois State Open
Judo Championships in Yorkville. There were approximately 200 competitors
and many terrific matches at all levels--junior, senior and masters. Most
notable was a marked change in demographics of our referees. For several
years, we have been concerned that our younger generation judoka were not
stepping on the mat with their gray slacks and black blazers in adequate
numbers to augment some of our more mature referees, who have long since made
more than their expected contribution to refereeing. Not so at the 2008
Illinois State Open. Half of the referees were under ~30 years old.
Here is a list of some of the up-and-coming referees at the Illinois
Open: Don Bordeau, Ashlie
Martini, Carie Chandler, Robby Schultheis,
Jarod Yamanaka, Travis Yamanaka, Justin Caviness and Matt Berends.
We appreciate and congratulate all our referees, regardless of their chronology
of wearing a black blazer :-) on their outstanding community service
contribution. Please see attached 2008 Illinois State Open results.
And finally, USA Scholastic
Championship Director, Ms. Sherrie Phillips, presented Dr. Kei Narimatsu, Illinois Judo's senior referee, a plaque for
Illinois winning the top state, the National High School Championship Award, at
the 2008 Youth and Scholastic Championships in Menomonee, WI.
All in all, a great month for
Illinois Judo.
Thanks, Tim

at the USA Judo Senior National Championships on Friday.

on Saturday at the Virginia Beach Convention Center with the men’s and women’s

Olson, a three-time Olympian who
returned from his 2004 retirement six months ago, struggled throughout the day,
