EDITORIAL – Wolf Junior Tournament / COMPETITION

We have too few shiais in the Chicagoland area as it is, without taking advantage of every opportunity for competition there is.  On May 17th, the 7th Annual Wolf Junior Tournament will be held at a new location and with better parking.  This event is for juniors with minimal experience as well as for juniors with greater experience.  It is for Seniors who would like to begin their referee experience.  It is for new coaches to sit matside and coach their players (blieve it or not, I plan to be there to coach, not referee).  SO, I encourage each of you clubs out there to support this event.  It is the only annual Junior tournament in Chicago and Brett and his merry band of Menomonee-ites are working very hard to make it better each  year.  It will give your true novice players a safe and healthy environment to enter their first tournament.  It will help to prepare your more advanced players for the Junior National rush.  And you will be supporting one of our truest grassroots program we have in Chicago.  This insight comes from realizing that Judo begins at the grassroots level.

So why support these local events?  Because that is where our Champions come from.  They all start out in local club and city shiai’s.  They graduate to state and regional championships and some make it to national and international prominence.  But they all start at shiai’s like the Wolf Junior Tournament and Gurnee and Tohkon and Midwestern and Wahadachi, Badger, America’s Cup, Loras, North-South and others throughout the Midwest and country.  They start at interclub and intra club events.  They start because we as instructors push and encourage our students to test themselves against others AND to have fun.  So the information is in the Judo Tournament Flyer attachment and the address is below.

Competition

What is competition?  What does it really teach?

Competition teaches about life.  If you want to win, you have to train hard.  Without pain, there is often no gain.  You learn that life is sometimes not fair.  You learn about winning and losing and how to achieve both with grace.  You learn that nothing is given to you, that to achieve greatness, you must give up something else.  It teaches goal setting, discipline and focus.  It assesses one’s self worth to others and within one’s self as well.  It is a source of achievement.  It balances life’s inequities of good and evil, right and wrong.  Sports teach them that people of all colors can come together in sportsmanship and friendship.  Sports and competition are healthy endeavors for folks of all ages but especially children.

In today’s society, we see too much self pandering of the ego.  Everyone has to win, losing is bad, getting hurt is not an option.  Adults are too indulgent of children because of this.  NO DODGE BALL – give me a break.  Kids need to learn these lessons early in life so that when they become adults, they will be able to balance life fairly.  They need to learn that not everyone will treat them fairly, that there will be some lucky breaks that go for them as well as against them.  Children need to learn to endure some degree of pain or discomfort as they navigate through life’s many obstacles.  They need to enjoy the thrill of winning and the grace of losing.  Children today are too sheltered from these activities by adults that teach them values that regardless of effort, everyone should win.  That no child should lose, therefore all children should win.

It is evident to me that this is not reality and that losing a match at 6 years of age is really no big deal.  Your child will forget far sooner than you will.  It is evident to me that winning and losing is really a mind set of the adult, not of the child.  It is all too evident to me that placing too much emphasis on winning or losing can tilt a child’s psyche both positively and negatively and not necessarily in that order.  We must ensure that a child’s focus is on healthy competitiveness, not a winner take all mentality.  Winning without losing is not winning at all, what it does mean is that you have not been challenged.

There is a saying that I tell parents often:  Children will grow in spite of their parents.  Think about it.   But parents must have a healthy attitude towards sports and competition or for that matter, any activity; not interfere too much in the child’s training and to be encouraging and empowering rather than deferential and critical.  As adults, we must instill ethical values and principles.  We must sacrifice the time and effort to get them to practice and back home again.  Parents must endure long hours of practice and watch the agonizingly slow pace of progress.  But in the end, it is worth it when your child comes up to you and thanks you for keeping them in Judo, or soccer, or piano, or dance.  That folks is the payoff, the reward of being a parent.  That is the thrill of victory – to see your child excel in Judo, to graduate with honors, to win a medal, to grow to be a well-rounded ethically passionate citizen who will contribute significantly to world around them.  Please take the time to reflect on this and I hope all of you have enjoyed, are enjoying or will enjoy this proud moment.  You have achieved greatness by your dedication and love of your child and your child will be forever grateful.  I guarantee it.

To Fellow Judoka,

I just wanted to remind everyone that the 2008 USJF Jr. National Championships are being held in Chicago this year on July 4th – 6th. The organizing committee is working very hard to make this a very “judoka friendly” event. Our registration packets are available on line at www.2008usjfjrnationals.com and have been designed to make it easier for each judoka, coach and official to download and print. See the attached document for more information on the tournament.

The Tohkon Classic XIII is also on schedule for this summer and will be held on Saturday, June 7th, 2008. This year the Tohkon Classic will be held at the brand new “Forum” at the University of Illinois, the same competition venue as the USJF Jr. Nationals. Competitors, coaches and families can use the Tohkon Classic as a warm up tournament for the Jr. Nationals and get comfortable with the competition site. We are anticipating another exciting, highly competitive tournament again this year. Registration forms for the Tohkon Classic XIII are also available on line at www.tohkon.com .

We look forward to seeing you in Chicago this summer. Bring the entire family and make it a vacation.

Something to Think About –

TIPS ON PUMPING GAS

I don't know what you guys are paying for gasoline.... But here in California we are also paying higher, up to $3.50 per gallon. But my line of work is in petroleum for about 31 years now, so here are some tricks to get more of your money's worth for every gallon.

Here at the Kinder Morgan Pipeline where I work in San Jose , CA we deliver about 4 million gallons in a 24-hour period thru the pipeline.  One day is diesel the next day is jet fuel, and gasoline, regular and premium grades.  We have 34-storage tanks here with a total capacity of 16,800,000 gallons.

Only buy or fill up your car or truck in the early morning when the ground temperature is still cold. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground the more dense the gasoline, when it gets warmer gasoline expands, so buying in the afternoon  or in the evening. ...your gallon is not exactly a gallon. In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature of the gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products plays an important role.

A 1-degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps.

When you're filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to a fast mode. If you look you will see that the trigger has three (3) stages: low, middle, and high. You should be pumping on low speed, thereby minimizing the vapors that are created while you are pumping.  All hoses at  the pump have a vapor return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some other liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapor. Those vapors are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you're getting less  worth for your money.

One of the most important tips is to fill up when your gas tank is HALF FULL or HALF EMPTY. The reason for this is, the more gas you have in your tank the less air occupying its empty space. Gasoline evaporates faster than you can imagine. Gasoline storage tanks have an internal floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the gas and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation. Unlike service stations, here where I work, every truck that we load is temperature compensated so that every gallon is actually the exact amount.

Another reminder, if there is a gasoline truck pumping into the storage tanks when you stop to buy gas, DO NOT fill up--most likely the gasoline is being stirred up as the gas is being delivered, and you might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom.  Hope this will help you get the most value for your money.
