EDITORIAL –
INDEPENDENCE DAY
Independence Day, the 4th of July. To most Americans, it is a
day off from work, a time to have a picnic, go to the ball game, relax with family and friends. It is a time of
fireworks and celebration, maybe a trip to the Taste of Chicago in Grant
Park. For some of us, it is a Judo tournament, the second on the Junior
National tour.
But Independence Day should be put in perspective. It is a
National Day of INDEPENDENCE and there should be some time set aside for
reverent reflection about what it really means to be independent. Independence Day is a day to celebrate our freedom from tyranny.
On this day in 1776, 56 signers of this declaration pledged their lives, their
Fortunes and their sacred Honor. This
is a STATEMENT.
These individuals were the leaders of this land. They were
the land owners, the business men, the legislators, the thinkers and
scientists. Most had families, all were considered wealthy. These
56 pledged their lives knowing that if they were caught surely they would be
shot or hung by the British. These 56 stood to lose their entire fortune
by standing against Great Britain and King George III. And most
important, they pledged their sacred Honor to uphold the principles of a free
and just society. None of these signers took this pledge lightly.
They understood “that all men were created equal, that they are endowed by
their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that
among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
Yes, these 56 stood to lose everything. And over the
years, men and women of our armed forces have stood by these words, have fought
bravely and some - too many - have made the ultimate sacrifice, to defend the
way of life of this great country. As we celebrate this week, we should
not take this sacrifice lightly. We should honor those who have served,
stand up and honor those veterans as they march past.
Thank them for their service, regardless of the war they fought in.
PROTOCOLS
Please do stand, face the flag, remove any head gear, place your
right hand over your heart and sing proudly, our National anthem or recite the
Pledge of Allegiance. By the way, are you aware that you should stand and
remove any hats for the playing of America the Beautiful also? Well you
do now. If a color guard is used to present
the flag, everyone is asked to stand from the time the flag enters the room
until the flag is retired. Non-citizens are asked to stand during these
times as well, being respectful of the flag and country which it
represents. Did you know that if a foreign flag or anthem is presented,
US citizens should stand and face the flag in respect for that country’s colors.
SOMEONE YOU SHOULD MEET: Army Ranger, Patrick Connolly has just finished
an MBA and a Master’s degree in Public Policy from Harvard University.
Patrick is a West Point graduate, served in Iraq and
is now living in Texas. He has participated in Judo since he was six
years old and was on the West Point Judo team. With young men such as
Patrick understanding their roles in leadership in this country, I think we are
on a good path. In a recent Harvard forum, Patrick speaks of leadership
and what he expects of his generation. I encourage you to watch this

Letter from Pat Ryan
As I'm sure you're
aware, Chicago was selected as a Candidate City by the International Olympic
Committee (IOC) earlier this month. We could not have accomplished this
milestone without the support and interest of all of you. While we are grateful
to have made it into the next round, we are competing against three world-class
cities in Madrid, Rio and Tokyo. The IOC also released its Working Group
Report, which is an assessment of each city's technical plan for the bid. You
might have heard Chicago was third among the four finalists. We aren't focused
on where we are ranked at this point in the process. Instead, we are analyzing
this feedback and will use it to strengthen our plan. The bid is also preparing
to send a delegation to Beijing as part of the IOC's Observer Program. We'll
have the opportunity to experience the Games in an official capacity as well as
to spread the message about Chicago to an international audience. I'll be sure
to keep you updated on our progress.
We have just 15 months
left in a bid campaign that started more than two years ago. There's much work
to be done, but I and the rest of the bid team will be doing everything we can
to put Chicago in the best position when the IOC announces the Host City in
October 2009. Thanks for your continued interest in this endeavor.

Service Announced for Former USA Judo President Frank Fullerton
Visitation and a memorial service
for former USA Judo President and Pan American Judo Union Sports Director Frank
Fullerton will be held on Thursday July 3 from noon – 2:30 p.m. in El Paso,
Texas.
Services will be held at the Sunset

JUNIOR OLYMPIC REFEREE REQUIREMENTS
Mr.
Jose Rodriguez, Executive Director of USA Judo, provides the invitation and
offer below. Please note the July 8 deadline date on this
opportunity. Please also note the change in procedure and the appropriate
contact person.
USA Judo Junior Olympics Invitation
As
all of you know, USA Judo will be hosting the annual Junior Olympics
Championships at Disney World in Orlando, Florida July 25-27th. The
event will be held at Coronado Springs Resort within Disney World. The hotel
headquarter will be the same Coronado Resorts. This
year USA Judo has added an International Division which will be contested on
Sunday, July 27 with the National Junior Olympics competitions been held on
Friday and Saturday. Already, many international Junior Teams have registered
for this event.
In
order to continue the support that USA Judo has been providing our referees
this year, USA Judo is announcing that it will be providing free double
occupancy rooms to all N-2 or higher referees wishing to work these National
Championships. The referees will be housed at Coronado Springs Resort where the
actual competition will be held. So far the number of pre-event reservations at
the headquarter hotel projects the largest turn-out of competitors in recent
years.
If
you wish to work these Junior Olympic Championships at Disney you are asked to
please call USA Judo National Office and speak with Alyssa Johnson ( tel.
719 866 4730 or direct line 719 866 3684 ) or you may write to her at Alyssa.johnson@usajudo.us . When you call please let Alyssa
know your choice of roommate and she will try to accommodate you. She will also
give you the information on airport transportation. Please let Alyssa know if
you are able to work Sunday’s International competitions as well. USA Judo will
have rooms available Thursday- Sunday and for those wishing to stay and work
the event on Sunday and may not be able to leave Sunday they will have
some rooms available as well. Please arrange that with Alyssa when you
call or write to her.
Presently,
USA Judo is planning on running 6 competition mats so your support for this
event is highly needed and appreciated by everyone. Please contact Alyssa at
the National Office by July 8th so that they can set up your
reservation and ground transportation on a timely basis. National
referees who are not eligible as on-mat referees are reminded that your
assistance as technical officials is highly sought and valued. The
Referee Commission grants credit which fulfills one's annual participation
requirement for such work.

TWO NICKELS AND FIVE
PENNIES
In the days when an ice cream sundae cost much less, a
10-year-old boy entered a hotel coffee shop and sat at a table. A waitress put
a glass of water in front of him. "How much is an ice cream sundae?"
"Fifty cents," replied the waitress.
The little boy pulled his hand out of his pocket and studied a
number of coins in it. "How much is a dish of plain ice cream?" he
inquired. Some people were now waiting for a table and the waitress was a bit
impatient. "Thirty-five cents, she said brusquely. The little boy again
counted the coins. "I'll have the plain ice cream," he said. (He had
only 50 cents in total)
The waitress brought the ice cream, put the bill on the table
and walked away. The boy finished the ice cream, paid cashier and departed.
When the waitress came back, she began wiping down the table and then swallowed
hard at what she saw. There, placed neatly beside the empty dish, were two
nickels and five pennies -her tip.
