EDITORIAL – Dog Days – Lazy Days

We are in the middle of the dog days – lazy days of summer.  But for JUNIOR JUDOKA’s, it is a heightened time for intense training.  With 4 Junior National events within a month, practice for 12 months prior so that one can peak in July, the intense training especially in June, plus some training camps thrown in for good measure, the preparation that instructor/coaches have to go through, the savings that parents have to go through to get their children to these major events – well, I can get tired just thinking about it.  And then there are the tournament organizers who have to host these events, the scores of volunteers to volunteer, venue and hotel management, hospitality, opening ceremonies, weigh-ins, registration, computers, mats, general transportation, invitations, medals are just some of the issues that tournament directors and staff have to deal with.  It is no wonder practice at their clubs are greatly curtailed during this time as well.  If a club is running or hosting the event, I am sure that for a week or more prior to the event, they shut down their dojos so that they can really concentrate on running a great event.  In August, a month will go by before most of these kids have to go back to school and many will blow off practice – a short but well deserved break for some.  Some dojo’s even close in August to give kids, instructors and parents a break from the routine of practice.  This is a normal routine and one that we all go through, year after year, tournament after tournament.

But I have to caution you.  This thinking can be dangerous to your dojo.  Instructors, parents, get your students back on the mat as soon as reasonably possible after the Junior circuit ends.  Why?  Because it is too easy to get out of the habit.  It is too easy to say,

“Well, I am just going to miss one practice,”  One practice turns into two, two into three, etc.

“I have been working all year, I need a break,” One week turns into two, two weeks into three, etc.

“I want to go to the dance next Friday.” Three practices a week turns into two, two into one, etc.

You get the idea.  We are creatures of habit and regardless of how much we fight it, it is too easy to miss a practice and never make it up.  And while your top players are at Junior National events, what about that new beginner who just started one month ago?  Do you close and say, come back in a month.  Not good for your dojo and more importantly, not good for that new student whose enthusiasm is just peaking at a time when you are closing.  Please tell me what is wrong with this picture.

So I have these suggestions for those dog days – lazy days summer daze:

o       Keep your dojo open, train your newly promoted black belts to teach judo while you are gone.  Keep the enthusiasm up for that new student, child or adult.

o       If you have to close the dojo, it should be for a defined period of time – during a holiday, summer or winter clean up.  A month is a long time, but if this in your schedule, so be it.

o       Expect your students to show up to practice each and every time there is practice.

o       If they are on break, tell your students to practice or train a little every day at home.  Work on a new step in, a new technique, cardio run, lift weights, keep on weight program, read a judo book, give homework on the history of Judo, tell your students to write an essay on Judo.  Remember, every judoka I know, and probably that you know also, has written as essay on what Judo means to me.  It could be for grammar school, high school, college entrance and college.  It is good training for their future academic careers.

o       As an instructor, commit to going to practice even if just one student is attending.  Of course, these days, you must be careful about having one student and one instructor especially if they are of the opposite sex.  That is too bad, of course, but that is the reality of it.

o       If it is too hot or too cold to practice, if there is too much snow or rain, it should make no difference.  There is always something that can be taught, learned or practiced.  Ideal conditions do not happen in competition, nor in practice.  Keep the dojo open.

o       Few clubs are open 7 days a week.  Most are open 2 – 3 times per week.  When you miss one practice, you are missing 33% to 50% of your practice.

o       If you have a “social club” especially, the dojo doors must be kept open.   These folks, be they adults or children, competitive or not, just want to practice.  They could care less about the Junior Nationals, the US Open or the Olympic Games.  They just want to practice – so let them.

o       If you have a competitive club, it is even more important to get the routine started as soon as possible.

o       As instructors, it is very important to promote our students to black belt and then empower them to take a leadership role in teaching others what they have learned.  Train them to teach good solid basic Judo but more importantly, empower them to teach your Judo, your philosophy, your principles, and your ethics.  They are good virtues, right?

o       Teach refereeing skills, kata as part of regular practice at all time.  Keep it interesting, keep it alive and most importantly, keep them coming back.

Something to Think About –

16 THINGS THAT IT TOOK ME OVER 50 YEARS TO LEARN:

by: Dave Barry, Nationally Syndicated Columnist

  1. Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.
  2. If you had to identify, in one word, the reason why the human race has not achieved, and never will achieve, its full potential, that word would be ‘meetings.’
  3. There is a very fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness.'
  4. People who want to share their religious views with you almost never want you to share yours with them.
  5. You should not confuse your career with your life.
  6. Nobody cares if you can't dance well. Just get up and dance.
  7. Never lick a steak knife.
  8. The most destructive force in the universe is gossip.
  9. You will never find anybody who can give you a clear and compelling reason why we observe daylight savings time.
  10. You should never say anything to a woman that even remotely suggests that you think she's pregnant unless you can see an actual baby emerging from her at that moment.
  11. There comes a time when you should stop expecting other people to make a big deal about your birthday. That time is age eleven.
  12. The one thing that unites all human beings, regardless of age, gender, religion, economic status or ethnic background, is that deep down inside, we ALL believe that we are above average drivers.
  13. A person who is nice to you, but rude to a waiter, is not a nice person. (This is very important. Pay attention. It never fails.)
  14. Your friends love you anyway.
  15. Never be afraid to try something new. Remember that a lone amateur built the Ark. A large group of professionals built the Titanic.
  16. Thought for the day: Men are like fine wine. They start out as grapes, and it's up to the women to stomp on them until they turn into something acceptable to have dinner with.
