Chicago 2016: Submit a video to tell the
world “Why Chicago”
My trip to Beijing
with the Chicago 2016 delegation as part of the IOC Observer Program has given
me the opportunity to spread the word about Chicago and experience some amazing
performances. Seeing the Beijing Games up close drives home how important the
character of a city is in creating a special atmosphere for athletes and
spectators alike. As we wind down our time here, I wanted to share an exciting
opportunity for you to take a leading role in bringing the 2016 Games to
Chicago. We are launching the Chicago 2016 online channel, which will feature
stories about Chicago as told through the eyes of its people. The bid needs you
to submit your own video that tells the world “Why Chicago” is the best city to
host the 2016 Games and gives people a taste of what our city will do for the
Games. Go to www.chicago2016.org
for details on how you can be part of it.
Best regards,
Patrick G. Ryan

Chicago 2016

his support to the bid. He will also be making himself available for a live Web
chat that will be carried only on the Chicago 2016 online channel (www.chicago2016channel.com).
Visit the site at 5:00 PM on Wednesday for your chance to ask Michael questions
and hear about how he’s been spending his time since his historic performance
in Beijing and his support of Chicago’s bid for the Games.
As a reminder, on
Wednesday morning Oprah Winfrey will be filming a special edition of her show
at Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park. The show
will celebrate the U.S. Olympic Team and feature more than 175 Olympians,
including Michael Phelps, Nastia Liukin,

offers seating for 7,000 people and will be available free of charge to the
public. The lawn opens at 6 AM, so don’t miss your chance to honor Team USA.

Clarification Of Statement
Please note that in the
statement we just released the wording used may have created some confusion, so
therefore we would like to clarify it:
"Delegates to the National
Assembly voting on behalf of Group A, B or C will be able to vote for referee
or coach elections as well, if they are so eligible to vote for those
positions. However, the delegate may only vote for one category other
than group A, B, or C.
This decision was
arrived at, after a few members contacted the National Office requesting that
we revisit the original ruling of delegates voting for only one category
period.
I hope this clarifies
the statement previously released."

Something to Think
About –
EDITORS NOTE:
Memory Test – I got a lot of grief from folks 56 – 67 who got perfect
scores. Of course they are the Boomers to which this test was
directed. Sorry for this being so easy. Personally, I only got 17.
In my psychotherapeutic analysis of this shortcoming, I have determined that
the reason I missed three questions is because my childhood was not grounded in
cartoon or fairy tales figures, only advertisement, food, heros,
news casters, television, smarty pants comebacks, folk singers, songsters, rock
‘n roll although I did get Mary Martin, who was the first Peter Pan. J Hope you enjoyed it regardless.

Pat,
Thanks for the opportunity to provide this introduction to our fellow coaches
and to tell everyone why I decided to run for a USA Judo board seat. I'll
try not to bore the group with a complete resume and stick to those points I
believe are most relevant. However, if anyone wishes to know more about
me, please feel free to ask.
I have been in the sport of judo for
more than 40 years, having started as a boy in New York
. Since then, I have been involved in our sport at virtually all
levels. I am presently one of the elite athlete senior instructors at the
Northglenn Judo Club where I have worked for many years with our elite senior
and junior players (www.northglennjudo.org).
In addition, since 2004, I have also served as head coach of a small college
team at the Colorado School of Mines, a member of the National Collegiate Judo
Association. I am an International (A-Level) USA Judo certified coach and
have participated at national coaching clinics for many years. I was
previously the past chair of the Coaches Subcommittee of the Colorado Judo
League and helped develop the curriculum used to certify our local coaches
through the C-Level (under the prior system). I have coached Northglenn 's elite athletes at USA Judo's largest
tournaments including the US Open, Senior Nationals, Fall Classic, Jr. Open,
and others.
I was also a member of the USA Judo
Coach Commission that existed under the previous coaching administration.
In this capacity, I served as Chief Coach Liaison at a number of major
tournaments including the 2005 Senior Nationals, Fall Classic, and US Open.
It was gratifying, at those tournaments, to have both coaches and referees
credit the coach liaison function with improving relations between coaches and
officials and resolving conflicts between them in a constructive manner.
Aside from my judo experience, I
believe that my business acumen and administrative skills also provide a
compelling argument for selection as a USA Judo director. With more than
25 years of business experience, and educational accomplishments that include a
Ph.D. in Business Administration (majoring in Operations Management) and an
MBA, I feel that I have the experience and skill set to help chart a new course
for USA Judo. I previously served a 3-year term (2000-2003) as an elected
director of the Society of Competitive Intelligence Professionals (SCIP), a
mid-sized international, nonprofit professional society, whose membership spans
more than 70 countries. While at SCIP, I was also named Chairman of the
Society's ethics committee. Hence, I believe that I have very relevant
experience in how a nonprofit BoD functions and
should conduct its business.
Professionally, I have many years of
diverse business and industrial experience. I am presently employed as a
renewable energy specialist for the Colorado Public Utilities Commission where
my work supports state policy initiatives promoting renewable and other
alternative energy technologies. Earlier, for nearly fifteen years, I
managed a small technology management consulting firm that focused on strategic
planning and market development for technology intensive firms. I have
taught university level courses in financial analysis and capital budgeting --
skills that I would hope to bring to USA Judo, as well. Hence, I believe
that my judo, business, and nonprofit BoD experience
combine to offer a set of credentials that can help move USA Judo into the
future.
I suspect that this message is
already long enough for one posting. However, let me just point out that
my biggest concern with the current management of USA Judo is a serious lack of
transparency at all levels. While the prior structure may have been
unwieldy and rather inefficient, I find that the current structure has
disenfranchised many people who have dedicated their lives to our sport. If I can rectify only one problem, that may be where I would start.
As has already been pointed out, this is reflected in the
voting procedures in this place for this election. It is not clear
to me why a mail-in ballot of all registered coaches and referees could not
have been conducted for their respective board slots.
Also, from speaking with a few
people, it seems that many of us are operating from the assumption that the
"coach director" will automatically become head of the coaches
program and the "referee director" will automatically become head of
the referee program. As I read the bylaws and the nominating procedure,
that is not necessarily the case. Rather, it would appear that these
designations are only mechanisms to allocate board seats. The directors elected
to these positions do not necessarily become the committee chairs responsible
for those functions. This is neither good nor bad but I thought it was
worth clarifying.
Lastly, the leadership of the USJF
and USJA had also asked the board candidates to address the issue of "If
elected, how would you support USJF and USJA efforts
to develop American Grassroots Judo?" Rather than repeat that
response and lengthen an already too long message, those who are interested can
find that repsonse at: http://natterit.com/gotjudo/index.php?page=usajudoelec
I look forward to seeing all of you
at the meetings and hope that together we can bring a new sense of community to
judo in the U.S.
Regards,
Rich Mignogna

Vision Statement: I envision, for
USA Judo, expanded depth in all divisions, enhancing our elite training to
become even more competitive on the international scene. I want to have
more elite regional training camps to provide both a greater opportunity for
coaches to work with our elite athletes and to provide our athletes with a
standardized skill set and basic knowledge of current international
trends. I would like to see heightened efforts to expand our outreach
programs to address military needs, the military is an untapped resource to
improve our depth; to develop a college level curriculum, to show colleges the
benefits of sustaining a judo program and encourage scholarship support (a judo
program could be a great way to meet Title IX requirements). I want an
easily accessible video library for coach education and development and we can
utilize technology to create a weekly program to continually develop coaching
skills and knowledge, standardize various coaching elements and enhance
scouting. I would like USA Judo to become a major player in international
competition.

credit the coach liaison function with improving relations between coaches and
officials and resolving conflicts between them in a constructive manner.
