EDITORIAL
What about tomorrow?
I wanted to get this
newsletter out a couple of days ago but as you well know, the bane of editors
is time, time, time or more precisely deadline, deadline, deadline. So
this is late but the thought is not.
Today is a sad
day. 7 years ago, an act of terrorism hit our shores and America finally
woke up. They woke up to the fact that there are bad people in this world
that would like to do further harm to our people, our culture, and our way of
life. In those days and months and even years after 9/11, Americans were
charged and enthusiastic about their patriotism and love of country. We
came together as never before. We sang patriotic songs, we wore flag
pins, we showed our patriotism on our shoulder.
Sadly, as with most things, time heals all wounds. Today, we still have
our one day of mourning but tomorrow will be just another day. Another day until the next major remembrance.
In the aftermath of
9/11, we came together as a country to make sure an attack like this would
never come to our shores again. For the most part, it did not, even
though the terrorist tried and failed. We did go to war and took the war
to the terrorist. Iraq and Afghanistan became the foci, rightly or
wrongly. Other parts of the world did feel the pain of terrorism
however. Bali, London, Madrid, to name a few. But time heals
all. We remember, but we forget. Time heals all.
We try to acknowledge
our shortcomings but habitually we are woefully inadequate. We do our
best to help people all over the world to become a democratic society where
tyranny runs from freedom, where people are free to vote, to live without fear,
to enjoy the freedoms of speech and press. We are generous to a fault and
regardless of what our critics say, we will continue to be generous in spite of
what the court of world opinion says. We do this because we are Americans
and that is our core, our conscience and our ethics.
I believe that the
world we live in remains dangerous. It remains dangerous because
Americans have become dependent on the rest of world to supply needed
products. We have lost the edge in manufacturing, in technology, in work
ethics. We have become too dependent on getting a free ride, wanting more
and working less. We have become complacent. We tell ourselves it
is not our job. We do not take responsibility for our own actions.
This results in following instead of leading, copying instead of innovating, off-shoring instead of in-shoring.
So we need to wake up,
to bring in a new ideology of what this country is all about. We need
CHANGE to keep AMERICA FIRST. I believe that idealism can be instilled in
the American psyche and that dreams can still be achieved by our ingenuity and
our dedication. John F Kennedy challenged this country to put a man on
the moon in less than 10 years. And we did. The space program spun
off innovation and jobs that continue to be the cornerstone of our economy
today. Today’s challenge is energy independence and I believe that if we
can put a man on the moon in 10 years, certainly we can become energy
independent in 10 years. It will take time and effort and sacrifice but
only the will of the people will make this happen. Regardless, we must
never forget the root cause of 9/11 and make our collective efforts a true
AMERICAN DREAM. So, what about tomorrow? We must remember yesterday
so that we will be ready for tomorrow.
OK, next week – back

Hi Kei,
You probably won't remember me. I'm a student of Dennis Helm. Would
you mind printing this small obituary to one of Fukuda's students in the next
issue of Ippon?
Sincerely,

Connie Glembot, 93 & Yodan
passed away on August 27, 2008. She was a student of Fukuda Sensei.
Although Connie was known for teaching kata it was my
pleasure to participate in a couple of her competitive Judo classes held in
Florida in the 80’s, which she taught well.
I enjoyed my short time spent with Connie. All of us in Judo
who knew Connie will miss her.

Statement of Remembrance from USA Judo President
Dr. Ron Tripp
At ground zero in New
York City, the names of our neighbors lost in the 9-11 terrorist attacks
were read and honored this morning - innocent victims of a
senseless attack upon our great nation.
In this moment of great
sadness USA Judo will remember our three heroes
of this tragic event.
Christian Reggenhard, Paul Pansini, and
Jeremy Glick made the ultimate sacrifice in efforts to save the lives of others
in the rubble of New York and on United Flight 93.
We are very proud that
the USA Judo Medal of Honor, established in honor of them and awarded to
these three men in 2001, serves to remind us of their personal courage and the
character that our great sport instills in each of us.

Scott Jones Eliminated after First Round at the Paralympic Games
(Colorado Springs,
Colo.) - Scott Jones (Little Rock, Ark. / Little Rock Judo) was greeted
by an enthusiastic crowd as he stepped onto the mat to begin judo competition
at noon on Sunday at the Beijing Workers' Gymnasium & Stadium. In the third
match on mat 2, the two-time Paralympian faced Oga Kenji in the first round, but lost by two waza-aris (half-point each) that equaled an ippon (instant win) which ended the match with only three
seconds left on the clock... more>
