EDITORIAL – my 2 cents
worth
Wanted to get this out
without editorial commentary because of the timely nature of the Illinois Judo
Board of Directors meeting this Sunday. Everyone is busy but knowing what
is going on in governance within Illinois Judo is part of the responsibility
you have to carry it forward. Whether a coach, referee, player, or
parent, you have a vested interest in how Judo is run in Illinois. If you
like it, let them know. If you don’t like it, let them know. The
ultimate insult is to say nothing. The ultimate abuse is neglect.
If you do not think your voice counts, think of what that is telling your
children or your students. Hey, I don’t have enough time to deal with
politics. I have enough trouble just teaching. I don’t care about
organized judo. My guess is that all of you care, but are afraid of
speaking out. Well don’t be. The leadership of Illinois Judo or for
that matter, any other organization does not have a magic bullet. They
are not omnipotently intelligent, although each of them are pretty smart.
They do not have all the answers and maybe have more questions than they know
what to do with. By showing up, by participating, you are telling the
leadership that you care. By showing up, you are saying that you are
willing to help. By showing up you are part of the solution, not part of
the problem. So that is my 2cents worth and that is my editorial comment that
I said I was not going to write about.

OMG, Conflict in Judo Scheduling –
please note this – thank you
Last week, we discovered an
unprecedented and potentially disastrous conflict in the Judo schedule, created
when the Jr. Nationals was moved from July 4th week to June 18th
week, resulting in the Jr. Nationals occurring simultaneously with the Greatest
Camp on Earth.
We have decided to move the Greatest
Camp to the following week. This will have a ripple effect on the martial
arts community, so we don’t take this decision lightly. However we refuse
to have two national events conflict with each other.
Each year we are astonished to see
where campers traveled from to arrive in the Carolinas for this event.
Over the past few years, we’ve had campers from Canada, Central America,
Europe, Puerto Rico, and 46 states. As we grow, we face additional
challenges such as the need for larger venues and more volunteers.
God has amazed me as He has brought
forth volunteers in all aspects of the Greatest Camp and campers each year so
that we can pay food and venue bills. As long as He continues to bless
us, we shall continue to bless you with the Greatest Camp.
Please understand that we don’t want
to upset Judoka and the other Martial Artists who faithfully gather at the
Greatest Camp each year. However we’ve determined that it is necessary
this year to move camp dates to June 25th - 28th.
We have some very special guest
instructors lined up, to be announced when schedules are finalized, in addition
to many regular camp staff instructors back by popular demand.
Remember to watch your emails and
the Greatest Camp website (http://www.judocamp.com/)
for announcements about our special guests and all-time favorites. You
won’t have to email us as in past years. In order to let you know as
quickly as possible, names of each exciting clinician will be publicized the
minute they are confirmed. :-P
Please advise your students and others
who would like to change their calendars while I work on assembling new email
groups.
Sincerely,
Debbie Rucker

Something
to Think About – One Day the Devil Challenged the Lord…
One day
the devil challenged the Lord to a Judo tournament
One Day the Devil challenged the Lord to a Judo
tournament. Smiling the Lord proclaimed, "You don't have a chance, I have
Kano, Mifune, Kotani, Kimura and all the greatest players up here".
"Yes", snickered the Devil, "but I have all the referees."
What are the three biggest lies told in Judo?
A Judo competitor, a Judo coach and a referee were all about to be executed by
firing squad. They had heard that the executioners were scared of natural
objects. The first day the Judo player was placed in front of the firing squad.
At the last moment he yelled out "WATER!" and they all ran away. The
next day the sensei was brought to the firing squad but he yelled out
"WIND!" and they all ran away again. The next day it was the referee's
turn. Knowing that it worked for the other two he yelled "FIRE!"
...and they shot him.
President of Judo Club: "Now, what should the colors of our club be?"
Student: "I'd suggest black and blue."
JOKES are good because of a modicum of
truth. J

Rodriguez Becomes First
U.S. Player to Win Two Medals at Junior Belgian Ladies' Open
In 2007,
then-16-year-old Jeanette Rodriguez (Davie, Fla. / USA Judo National
Training Site at North Miami) was one of two U.S. players to climb the
podium of the prestigious Junior Belgian Ladies' Open for the first time in the
event's history.
Two years later, the former Pan American Games bronze medalist has moved up in
weight from 48kg to 52kg, but was still considered to be one to watch for the
gold medal in Arlon on Saturday.
In a unique format, players must compete in round robin pools with the top two
players advancing into the main draw. Once in the draw, a player who
loses early may only fight through for bronze if her opponent advances to the
final.
Rodriguez appeared to have little difficulty, winning her first match in the
pool and pinning Emily Hickman (GBR) in the second. Hickman, like
Rodriguez was a former 48kg player who also has moved up in weight, but had
World Cup success in 2008 when she won a silver medal at the Birmingham event.
After a first-round bye in the main draw, Rodriguez's momentum was stopped by
former 57kg player Carla Grol (NED) who defeated Rodriguez by a penalty
that was awarded with three seconds left on the clock... more>
