EDITORIAL – Getting
older
This will be a very
short editorial as I am off to see my grandchildren who will be coming in for
the weekend. But I hope that the point will be made very clear because it
does affect all of us. Yes, even you teens and 20 somethings
who are invincible.
I was just reminded
that I am getting older. Just think of that!! And
what a novel idea. Me getting older and not be able to referee any
more. Or coach. Or work out. Or be Head Instructor. Or
work tables. Or set up mats. Or travel to Nationals. Or worse, travel to
the World Championships. Let me tell you, it is a rude awakening and one
that everyone of you, if you live that long, will
experience.
I just saw the
demographics of our referees in Illinois. We have 8 referees in the
entire state of Illinois. Broken down we have
1
active International A
1 active Continental B
1 inactive Regional C
5 Nationals – 3 are active, 2
are retired
8 Referees – 2 are
downstate and 6 are part of the Chicago scene
Of these 8, only one
(maybe 2) is under the age of 50. Everyone else is pushing 70!! (including ME).
There is a
generational gap here and I guess as the titular head of the referees in
Illinois, I am responsible. There are no excuses but I do want to point
out the following:
o
It is up to the head
coaches of each dojo to recruit referee
o
It is up to each
National and higher referee to train them
o
It is up to each
judoka to be knowledgeable in all aspects of judo including knowledge of the
rules
o
As a player/coach,
knowing the rules will make you a better player/coach
o
We do have referee
clinics at each tournament where rules are explained. Everyone is
invited. Few players and coaches bother to show up. The folks who
do show up are the referees – each of them take away
some new epiphany or re-enforcement about refereeing – I hope.
o
Separate referee
clinics have been held periodically – in Wisconsin.
o
Separate referee
clinics have been offered in Illinois – it has been well over a year since we
have had one as an event. (there are some club clinics
that I know of)
o
Suggest that a
requirement to attain Shodan is a referee
certification (Local or Regional) to be qualified.
o
Some clubs have
started referee development programs: Juniors(over 18) and adults are
ready to be tested to National, but have not. Why NOT?
o
Some folks have a
misguide impression that being a coach is a more noble calling than being a
referee. This is not true for reasons too many to explain here.
o
Some folks have a
misguided impression that all referees get beat up by me, by parents, by other
coaches. This could be true but in most cases it is not!!
o
Some folks are afraid
to referee for fear of making a mistake. I think the same can be said
about anything you try for the first time. Training, learning and
experience are the keys to overcome this.
o
Some folks are not cut
out to be referees. And while I respect that, one should also not
discount their abilities to try. Certainly, I tried my hand at
coaching. It is hard! Harder than refereeing –
for sure.
I guess I could go on
and on but I hope I have made the point. Refereeing like any other aspect
of Judo requires the collective efforts of all in Judo to be encouraging, to be
empowering and to kick folks in the be-hind every now and then to help
out.
Lastly, all of you
will experience this Judo aging process because, “Only the good die
young.” Go forth and call IPPON!!!
Please note following
referee uniform requirement for the Illinois Open is the IJI white polo with
the IJI logo. We will have extras on hand. Thanks, Tim Schultheis

OTHER or LOCAL NEWS:
From the Illinois Judo Vice
President:
I would like to thank all the clubs,
coaches, and athletes for coming out to the IJI Jr
workout at our club (Atlas Xtreme Team) on February
28, '09. We had a great turnout, with about 60 people on the mat.
At a cost of only $5 per person, this is a bargain, and still a nice way to
raise a few dollars for Illinois Judo, Inc. This was a great opportunity
for athletes to randori with members of other clubs,
in a friendly environment. I believe opportunities like this make
Illinois Judo stronger as a group, and think it is valuable for the kids to
feel a part of the larger "Judo family".
We had several National Champions on
the mat for the workout, as well as our own Tom LeCuyer,
who just brought home a bronze medal for the U.S. from the Submission Grappling
World Championships in Lucerne, Switzerland. With a good mix of top-level
players, and beginners alike, everyone had a chance to improve their judo at
the workout. I hope that you all can make the next workout, continue
making Illinois Judo stronger, and continue to help each other through
principles of "mutual welfare and benefit".
Additionally, we look forward to
hosting the upcoming Illinois Open State Judo Championships here in Yorkville
on March 14, and hope to see you at the tournament. Good luck, and best wishes for all success.
Sincerely,
Chuck Clark

Judo Icon Dies – Dr Eichi Koiwai
About two and half weeks ago Doc went into the hospital with
cancer – biopsies showed it was in the pancreas and liver. On Saturday, we
celebrated with him, his 89th birthday – he was at home and on
hospice. His whole family was there too. This morning at 3:45 Doc
died. He was ready and said his good-byes on Saturday – he also laughed
and smiled. His pain was being maintained but he was a Doctor even to the end –
he knew what was happening and so it is a blessing that he did not suffer. The
Judo community has lost a great, great man – we who lived near him and grew up
with him as one of our senseis were very fortunate
and we know it. I first met Doc 44 years ago at Ishikawa’s Dojo in
Philadelphia. I suspect by now he is smoking a cigar and Phyllis is
talking his ear off – all good. .
Susan Oles
Some more brief
thoughts:
I received this yesterday
and wanted all of you to know, in case you have not heard yet. I suspect
you have already.
DOC was one of those true
gentle men who has influenced many lives, including
mine. It is a deep, deep loss to the Judo community as well to the
Medical community and to the many thousands of folks who have been privileged
to know him. We will miss him, but we will honor him by keeping alive
what he has taught us. Only though “passing it down” does a legacy become
alive.

New York YMCA CAMP
Here's some info about a fantastic
camp! Please forward to anyone that enjoys Judo. Camp has something
for everyone at every stage of their Judo - from the high ranked black belt to
those stepping on the mat for the first time. Every age is encouraged to
attend as well. Excellent Kata, Shiai and Referee clinics daily, and opportunities to expand
to Tai Chi and self-defense are offered. They even have horseback
riding!!!!
Camp is a week long, but many only
attend for a couple of days, as their schedules permit. Fees are prorated
to length of stay. Fees include all meals and housing,
Any additional food and beverages is at your expense. I would be
happy to discuss my experiences at the camp throughout my camp stays. It
is a great opportunity to meet some of the best Judoka, learn from some of the
best, and have fun all the way around!
Please forward to dojos so that
all those in Judo can have a look-see. Thank you!

ILLINOIS JUDO POLOs
Hello all fellow judoka
and judo-friendly families,
I just wanted to offer
you the chance to Pre-order a t-shirt for the upcoming Illinois Open State Judo
Championships on March 14 in Yorkville. Sorry for the late notice
(response requested by March 7), but we thought we might be able to minimize
the chance of having "too many" shirts at the Open if we can arrange
pre-orders ahead of time. I hope you can open the attachment, and see the
cool design for the shirts this year. If you would like to pre-order,
then simply respond to this email with the size and quantity of shirts you
would like (and your name), and we'll have it waiting for you at the
tournament. You can pay when you pick it up. The shirts are $15,
and help raise funds to cover costs of hosting the tournament.
Also, a tournament entry
form and info can be downloaded from www.usjudo.org
calendar of events. We really hope that you will be able to attend, and
look forward to seeing you all. Please feel free to contact me with any
questions.
Thank you for supporting
the 2009 Illinois Open Judo Championships!
Best wishes,
Chuck Clark

P.S. If you have
others in your contact list that you'd like to forward this to, feel free to
pass it on.

Something to Think About – Good
Advice
Good advice worth
saving. Some items we knew, however there are some good, new ideas. Might save your home, etc. ATTORNEY's ADVICE - NO
CHARGE!!
Read this and make a
copy for your files in case you need to refer back to it someday. A
corporate attorney sent the following out to the employees in his
company. Maybe we should all take some of his
advice!
Unfortunately, I, an attorney, have firsthand knowledge because my wallet was
stolen last month. Within a week, the thieve(s) ordered an expensive monthly
cell phone package, applied for a VISA credit card, had a credit line approved
to buy a Gateway computer, received a PIN number from DMV to change my driving
record information online, and more.
But here's some critical information to limit the damage in case this happens
to you or someone you know:
But here's what is
perhaps most important of all: (I never even thought to do this.)
The alert means any
company that checks your credit knows your information
was stolen, and they have to contact you by phone to authorize new credit.
By the time I was advised to do this, almost two weeks after the theft, all the
damage had been done. There are records of all
the credit checks initiated by the thieves' purchases, none of which I
knew about before placing the alert. Since then, no additional damage has been done, and the thieves threw my wallet
away this weekend (someone turned it in.) It seems to have stopped them
dead in their tracks.
Now, here are the numbers you always need to contact about your let, if it has
been stolen:
1. ) Equifax :
1-800-525-6285
2. ) Experian (formerly TRW)
: 1-888-397-3742
3. ) Trans Union :
1-800-680 7289
4. ) Social Security
Administration (fraud line): 1-800-269-0271
We pass along jokes on the internet; we pass along just about everything.
If you are willing to pass this information along, it could really help someone
that you care about.
UPCOMING EVENTS – 2008
Please note the following events on the horizon for Illinois and the
Midwest. Communication and download information can be gotten directly
through this email by attachments or by going to www.judofdl.com (Welcome Mat Judo). OR www.judocalendar.com
(Jim Carmer). Either site is a wealth of
information on Judo events. Both have more events listed than I have, so
visit their sites often. Thanks.

U.S. Open Championships Returns
to San Jose, Sept. 25-27
(Colorado Springs,
Colo.) - Thirty years after the first U.S. Open, San Jose, Calif. will once
again welcome athletes from at least 20 nations to compete in one of the
premier international events in North America when the Open is held Sept.
25-27.
"San Jose is to judo what Eugene, Ore. is to track and field in our
country and that is why we are so excited that San Jose has agreed to host the
2009 U.S. Open," said USA Judo CEO Jose H. Rodriguez (Colorado Springs,
Colo.) "We all know that any time you think of a judo tournament in
San Jose, you know that it will be a first class event."
