EDITORIAL – New CLUBS

No time to discuss in detail, but  please note two new clubs highlighted in this issue.  Judo clubs are so few across the state that when someone starts one, I say WOW.  The two clubs noted are in Champaign, IL and Rockford, IL.

I can tell you that over the years Champaign has had an interesting history of trying to keep it alive and well.  I know there were some efforts prior to my son going there and resurrecting the club.  There was another black belt there also, whose name I do not remember.  It is difficult to sustain a judo club within a University setting because  if started, who maintains it after they graduate?  Obviously, the idea is to get a local to teach.  There are few successful University clubs in the US.  San Jose State, U of Texas at College Station, U of Colorado at Colorado Springs are just a couple that have managed to survive over the years.

Some of the folks who I know definitely were practicing and teaching in Champaign were:

Kevin Narimatsu

Natalie Liverant

Andy Bosiljavac

Brett Kumataka

Travis Yamanaka

Brad Yamanana

Jerrod Yamanaka

I know I missed some folks and if I did, I am sorry.  So, Alex, good luck and happy landings.

Rockford and Dennis Helm goes back perhaps before I was even in Judo?  NAWWWW!!! But it does go back quite some time.  I know Dennis came out of the Carbondale club, and after moving to the Rockford area, was a long time teacher and sensei in the area.  Looks like a very nice facility to work out in.

It is nice to see any new club start up but especially those in the more remote areas of the state.  Congratulations and GOOD LUCK.

BUSHI CATS

Hi Tim

It was nice meeting you at the shiai today. I was impressed with two things today - some excellent judo play (well, and of course the regular kind too,) and good, consistent refereeing.

I have a judo club at the Champaign Park District, called Bushi Cats. I was also just asked to be the instructor at University of Illinois judo club, Illini Judo. I figure I had best get on the ins with the other coaches and senseis, and what better way to do it than through Illinois Judo.

These workouts have been made possible by Sensei Goro Oki, the Chicago Judo Black Belt Association and Tohkon Judo Academy. Please make plans to attend and take advantage of this opportunity.

By the time most people see this notice it will be late however, the Tenri team will also be visiting Cohen’s Judo Club on Monday, March 23, 2009.  It is an honor to be able to have such teams in our area and every effort should be made to take advantage of what they have to offer.

Something to Think About

Travis Stevens and Nick Delpopolo Win Silver Medals at the New York Open

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) - Seven months after the Olympic Games in Beijing, Travis Stevens (Wakefield, Mass. / NYAC / USA Judo National Team FORCE) found himself facing 2008 Olympic Champion Ole Bischof (GER) for the second time when he advanced to the 81kg finals of the New York Open on Sunday in New York City.

Stevens and Bischof fought a close match in Beijing with Stevens losing by a pair of penalties in the third-round match.  Bischof, a former European Champion, would go on to win the gold while Stevens showed the world he was a player to watch with a ninth-place finish in his Olympic debut.

Rule Changes for Junior Athletes
The IJF has recently modified its rules regarding Junior and Youth competition. The following rule changes will be made effective immediately and will take place at the upcoming USA Judo Youth and Scholastic National Championships and Cadet World Trials:

1. There will be NO armbars permitted in the Juvenile B divisions.
2. All IJF-Junior and Juvenile B matches will be four minutes in duration with a two-minute Golden Score period.

IJF Revises Olympic Qualification System
The International Judo Federation recently announced that the qualification system for the 2012 Olympic Games has been revised.

Most notably, the process by which athletes will gain Olympic qualification points for the 2012 Games will now begin on May 1, 2010.  The process will close on April 30, 2012.

Athletes who have earned points on the World Rankings List will retain those points for ranking and seeding purposes, but any points earned prior to May 1, 2010 WILL NOT COUNT toward the roster that will be used to select the athletes that will compete at the 2012 Olympic Games.

In addition, the time period with which athletes will retain points after they have been earned has changed to the following:

·         In the first 12 months after the tournament the points will count 100%
·         After 12 months the points will be reduced to 50%
·         After 24 months the points will be reduced to 0 and not accounted for anymore

The IJF has defined the point of expiration as the first day of the month in which points are earned.  Therefore, an athlete who earns 24 points on March 30 will see his or her points reduced to 12 (50%) on March 1 of the following year and the points will be removed entirely on March 1 two years after the original tournament.

Click here for more information on the World Rankings List.

Click here for more information on the 2012 Olympic Qualification system.

In a statement, the IJF explained the rationale for the revisions as follows:

Modification of the Qualification System for London 2012 Olympics.
Recently the IJF EC had to review the external elements that are affecting the global sports scene and also the principles of the ASOIF and ANOC with regard to the Olympic qualification system adopted for judo. It is now obvious, that the global economic downturn is affecting, and will continue to affect, the important support provided to sport by governmental agencies as well as the private sector, to which the sport of judo is no exception. Such a development could not have been envisaged at the time when the new Olympic qualification system for judo was being put together.

There are, additionally, other factors that now prompt a review of the situation including the principles set by the ASOIF and ANOC for Olympic qualification in general. At a meeting of the IJF President Mr. Marius Vizer, Mr. J.L. Rougé and Mr. V. Barta with the IOC sports directors in Lausanne on 27 February 2009, it was concluded, that the IJF will modify its otherwise progressive qualification system with regard to the current circumstances.
