EDITORIAL – New CLUBS
No time to discuss in detail, but please note two new clubs highlighted in this
issue. Judo clubs are so few across the state that when someone starts
one, I say WOW. The two clubs noted are in Champaign, IL and Rockford,
IL.
I can tell you that over the years Champaign
has had an interesting history of trying to keep it alive and well. I
know there were some efforts prior to my son going there and resurrecting the
club. There was another black belt there also, whose name I do not
remember. It is difficult to sustain a judo club within a University
setting because if started, who maintains it
after they graduate? Obviously, the idea is to get a local to
teach. There are few successful University clubs in the US. San
Jose State, U of Texas at College Station, U of Colorado at Colorado Springs
are just a couple that have managed to survive over the years.
Some of the folks who I know definitely were
practicing and teaching in Champaign were:
Kevin Narimatsu
Natalie Liverant
Andy Bosiljavac
Brett Kumataka
Travis Yamanaka
Brad
Yamanana
Jerrod Yamanaka
I know I missed some folks and if I did, I am
sorry. So, Alex, good luck and happy landings.
Rockford and Dennis Helm goes back perhaps
before I was even in Judo? NAWWWW!!! But it does go back quite some
time. I know Dennis came out of the Carbondale club, and after moving to
the Rockford area, was a long time teacher and sensei in the area. Looks
like a very nice facility to work out in.
It is nice to see any new club start up but
especially those in the more remote areas of the state. Congratulations
and GOOD LUCK.

From the Illinois Judo Vice President:
To everyone involved in the 2009 Illinois Open Judo

On behalf of Illinois Judo Inc and the Atlas Xtreme Team, I would like to thank everyone in the judo

BUSHI CATS
Hi Tim
It was nice meeting you at the shiai today. I was
impressed with two things today - some excellent judo play (well, and of course
the regular kind too,) and good, consistent refereeing.
I have a judo club at the Champaign Park District, called Bushi Cats. I was also just asked to be the instructor at
University of Illinois judo club, Illini Judo. I figure I had best get on the ins with the other coaches and senseis,
and what better way to do it than through Illinois Judo.

Judo Academy
To All Judoka,
We have another unique opportunity to host members of the Tenri University Judo Club at Tohkon
Judo Academy.
On Tuesday and Wednesday March 24 and 25, 2009,
Sensei Yamane, 5th dan, Chairman of the
Board of Tenri University Judo, will be at Tohkon with three of his students to practice with our
local judoka. Details of this special event can be found on the attached
flyers.
These workouts have been made possible by Sensei Goro Oki, the Chicago Judo Black Belt Association and Tohkon Judo Academy. Please make plans to attend and take
advantage of this opportunity.
Doug Tono
By the time most people see this notice it will
be late however, the Tenri team will also be visiting
Cohen’s Judo Club on Monday, March 23, 2009. It is an honor to be able to
have such teams in our area and every effort should be made to take advantage
of what they have to offer.
