EDITORIAL –

I have been a bit preoccupied with personal issues so my efforts in the IJI Newsletter has definitely taken a back seat.  All that is going to change in the next couple of months and I may infact have more time to devote to this endeavor.  Please be patient with me knowing that I am trying my best.  KN.

I will say that it saddens me again to announce another death in our Judo family.  Many know Virgil, some of you do not.  For those that do, you will miss him.  For those that do not know him, you have missed him.  Please read the note below.  It pretty much sums up my thoughts about a wonderful judoka/human being.

I have known Virgil since the early 80’s.  Virgil was at one time considered one of the best National referees in the country.  As I was coming up, I was privileged to have him constantly helping me get better as a referee and as a person.  Virgil always helped folks and in that way was always giving back to Judo.  He never held back at the expense of his own career.  He was always looking for ways to promote judo through refereeing, coaching, administration, and promotions.  When it was time for Virgil to retire from refereeing, he did so gracefully.  He did not leave judo as so many do and he immediately found other ways to help.  He became a valuable mat supervisor and was on top of any mistakes because he knew and understood the rules.  As a referee evaluator on the mat, I was always comforted if Virgil was looking over the timers and scorers.

Virgil will be missed by his family, there is no doubt.  But Judo will also lose a part of our soul with his passing.  Virgil will be missed for much more than his physical presence.  He will be missed for his even handed personality.  He will be missed for his advice and counsel.  He will be missed for his kindness, his gentleness, his grace and understanding of the true spirit and meaning of Judo.

Thank you Virgil, thank you for being a friend to me as well as to the many hundreds and perhaps thousands of other judokas you have influenced in your lifetime.  You have made a difference with our Judo family and we are all blessed to have had you a part of our lives.

Sincerely,

Kei Narimatsu

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) - USA Judo is saddened to announce that Virgil Bowles (Indianapolis, Ind.) passed away on April 9 at the age of 75, following a heart attack sustained two weeks prior.

An eighth degree black belt, Bowles dedicated more than 40 years to teaching the sport of judo and was the founder of Virgil's Judo Club.  Bowles was actively involved in all areas of the sport as a National-Level referee and an A-Level kata judge

"Virgil was a nice man who never let judo organizational politics taint his love of the sport or his willingness to support anything in judo, regardless of organization," said USA Judo General Secretary and Past President Dr. Ron Tripp (Norman, Okla.) "I considered him a good friend and will miss him greatly as the quiet, gentle soul he was at every event I recall."

Bowles was a Sergeant in the Army and a Veteran of the Korean Warm before working as a quality inspector for 41 years at Ford Motor Company.

Bowles is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Jean Bowles; children Virgil Bowles, Jr., Brenda Bowles-Harber and Walter Bowles; and grandchildren Joshua Bowles and Amy Bowles.

Illinois Judo Open Workout

All,

Please mark your calendars for May 16th.  Barrington Judo Club is hosting an open workout for all judoka.  This will be an especially good chance for juniors to get in some more rounds with strong competitors from the area, leading up to the Menominee and Tohkon tournaments, then ramping up to Junior Nationals over the summer.

Sticking to the format that has worked well in previous open workouts, this will be a mix of a little bit of technical instruction & competition tips, and plenty of ran dori.

Please feel free to share this information with any judo club or judoka who you think might be interested.

Event detail and directions are in the attached flyer.  Alternatively, you can find the flyer and other pertinent details on our website:  www.BarringtonJudo.com

See you there!

Something to Think About

WATER

#1.   75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated.
(Likely applies to half the world population)

#2.     In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak
that it is mistaken for hunger.

#3.    Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as 3%.

#4.   One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs
for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of
Washington study.

#5.     Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.

#6.    Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of
water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain
for up to 80% of sufferers.

#7.    A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term
memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on
the computer screen or on a printed page.

#8.   Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of
colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast
cancer by 79%., and one is 50% less likely to develop
bladder cancer. Are you drinking the amount of water
 you should drink every day?

 COKE

#1.    In many states the highway patrol carries
two gallons of Coke in the trunk to remove blood from
the highway after a car accident.

#2.     You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of Coke
and it will be gone in two days.

#3.    To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the
toilet bowl and let the 'real thing' sit for one hour,
then flush clean. The citric acid in Coke removes
 stains from vitreous china.

#4.    To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers:
Rub the bumper with a rumpled-up piece of Reynolds
Wrap aluminum foil dipped in Coca-Cola.

#5.    To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour
a can of Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble
 away the corrosion.

#6.   To loosen a rusted bolt: Apply a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola
to the rusted bolt for several minutes.

#7.    To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of Coca-Cola into
the baking pan, wrap the ham in aluminum foil, and bake.
Thirty minutes before ham is finished, remove the foil, allowing the drippings to mix
with the Coke for a sumptuous brown gravy.

#8...   To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of Coke
into the load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run
through a regular cycle. The Coca-Cola will help loosen
grease stains. It will also clean road haze from your
 windshield.

 FOR YOUR INFORMATION:

#1     the active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid.
It will dissolve a nail in about four days. Phosphoric
acid also leaches calcium from bones and is a major
contributor to the rising increase of osteoporosis.

#2.   To carry Coca-Cola syrup! (the concentrate) the
commercial trucks must use a hazardous Material place
cards reserved for highly corrosive materials.

#3.    The distributors of Coke have been using it to clean
engines of the trucks for about 20 years!

Now the question is, would you like a glass of water?

or Coke?

Quick! send this helpful info on to your friends

health conscious or not!!!!

Partially Funded Junior Competition Opportunity
Jikji Cup
Cheongju, Korea
June 30-July 4, 2009

The Jikji Cup will be held for athletes born in 1990 or later in Cheongiu, Korea from June 30-July 4.  Competition will be held in Olympic weight divisions only.  U.S. athletes placing in the top five will receive 10 points for a gold medal, six points for a silver medal, four points for a bronze medal or two points for a fifth-place finish on the appropriate USA Judo Junior Elite National Roster(s).

This is a closed tournament with a maximum of one competitor per weight division allowed to compete from each country.  Therefore, athletes will be selected for this tournament based upon their ranking on the USA Judo IJF-Junior National Roster following the close of the USA Judo Senior National Championships, April 17-18 in San Diego, Calif.

Invitations will be offered to the highest ranked athlete in each Olympic weight division on the IJF-Junior roster.  Should the highest ranked athlete decline to participate in the event, the next highest ranked athlete in that weight division will be offered the slot with subsequent declinations resulting in a progressive movement down the roster, according to the same criteria.

Each athlete will receive free room and board during the competition.  USA Judo also will designate a coach and manager for the trip.

In addition to the one athlete allotted per weight division, the tournament organizers may grant up to one additional slot per nation per weight division.  Athletes interested in these slots are encouraged to participate in the tournament if permission is granted by the organizers; however, the second athlete selected in each weight division will be responsible for his or her own room and board ($120 per day based upon double occupancy).
