FROM THE IJI PRESIDENT:
Illinois Judo congratulates its numerous athletes who won, placed or competed
at this year's Scholastic National Championships. This year's annual
Illinois State Open Judo Championships, held last
weekend, 10 Apr 2010, was a great success. Congrats and thanks to all
participants and supporters. We will post results soon. As stated
in previous messages, we intend to hold the annual IJI meeting and elections
during May or June. However, I have not received any notice of members
desiring to run for an IJI office yet.
PROMOTIONS: Congratulations to
Irwin Cohen and Pat Burris. USA Judo has promoted Irwin Cohen of Cohen's
Judo Club to Hachidan, 8th degree black belt. A
great accomplishment and well deserved. Considered one of the best judo
players in the United States, Irwin's accomplishments are many. He
started his Judo career at Uptown Dojo in the Uptown district of Chicago in the
60's. Irwin was a very success competitor, winning numerous championships
at the junior, high school and national levels. Irwin was a National
Champion and was selected to the 1972 Olympic team which was held in Munich
Germany. After retiring from active competition, Cohen started his own
Judo club, which is currently located in Mundelein IL. Irwin trained the
1984 Silver Medalist, Bob Berland and his own sons,
RJ and Aaron. Aaron, a several time U.S. World Team Member, was an
alternate to the 2008 Olympic team. USA Judo also promoted Pat Burris of
USA Stars to Hachidan, 8th degree black belt.
Pat, like Irwin was extremely successful in his quest for excellence. As
an athlete, Coach Burris had a brilliant career. His athletic
accomplishments are world-renowned. Some of his victories include winning
the USA National Judo Championship seven times, capturing Pan-Am Gold, winning
the pre-Olympic Championships and representing the USA in two Olympic Games
(1972 & 1976). Pat was awarded entry into the coveted Hall of Fame on
two occasions--Judo Athlete and Judo Coach--and was awarded the Jim Thorpe Man
of the Year Award for Martial Arts in 2006. According to Coach Burris,
his most prized athletic accomplishment is being awarded the "Fighting Spirit"
award a record seven times. No other athlete in the history of American
Judo has accomplished this before or since. Pat coaches from his club in
Oklahoma; however, Illinois Judo has had a long and vital partnership with
Coach Burris and considers him part of the Illinois Judo family.
Illinois Judo extends its
congratulations to Irwin Cohen and Pat Burris.
