Kolev takes 3rd at Dallas Open, November 25, 2017
In a very tough under 100kg division with 12 top level competitors, Deyan Kolev of this dojo, placed third, losing only to the 1st place winner, Tokuzo Takahashi from LA Tenri. Deyan had 5 matches. He lost his first match with Takahashi by going almost the full round and losing only by penalties. He won his next three matches by ippon and lost his last match to Takahashi again. This is Deyan’s first major championship in many years. His goal is to enter the Senior Nationals in 2018.
Deyan came to this dojo at the age of 15, having immigrated with his parents from Bulgaria. He started his Judo career at around 8 and was a well known player in the junior ranks there. When he came to Tenri Dojo, he brought a credibility to this dojo immediately with excellent technique, tournament and competitive skills. Over the years, Deyan has placed at various event in Illinois, Wisconsin, Missouri, Michigan and now Texas. Now 26 years old, he wants to continue to compete in as many tournaments as possible. He is an inspiration to all of our members especially the young ones who look up to him as a superstar.
